Project Offset to offset 360

Here's a tip. If you want to get in good with 360 Fanboy bloggers (this one at least), send us news about Project Offset. For those of you that don't know, Project Offset is the codename for an upcoming fantasy FPS created by Offset Software (hence, the catchy codename). Anywho, the news: Offset Software has recently updated their website with a job listing for an Xbox 360 programmer (curiously, no PS3 programmers, though). Offset has already stated that they planned to bring the title out for consoles, but it's nice to see that development is continuing apace -- the studio has also acquired an as yet unnamed "major" publisher. In case you've never heard of this game or its developer, check out a video of the Offset engine in action. Could the Unreal Engine finally see some real competition?
[Thanks, Vill4no and SickNic]

The Unreal engine already has competition in the form of the Cry engine from Crytek (The Farcry/Crysis guys). Offset looks to throw a third contender into the ring and hopefully they'll have a good game to go with it. FarCry was beautiful, but I only enjoyed looking at it, not playing.

the offset engine is much less resource intense then either unreal 3 or Crysis, the hardware that demo was created on is only a geforce 7 series chipset, where as both unreal and crysis are directx 10 games.

the engine is superior in many ways to either.
this is what happens when developers are hungry.

"the offset engine is much less resource intense then either unreal 3"
Indeed. I think that's the future of game development really. Not bigger hardware, but smarter software.
Check out Offset's website and you'll find out that these models all have pretty low polygon counts, just tons of effects. Very impressive.

UE3 excels in it's toolset as much as it's graphic capabilities. The real draw of UE3 is it's robust tools for creating complex game content easily. I doubt any of the "homebrew" engines can top even a fraction of UE3's tools UE3 offers. Graphics or performance alone aren't why so many game companies have jumped onto the UE3 boat. Shaving a year or dev time and 4-5 million dollars off the production costs of a game are pretty important factors these days.

And the fact that Artifical Studios Reality engine was bought out basically killed unreals bigger competition
