MGS4 on the Xbox 360? [Updated]
Most of us were so busy gabbing about the Halo 3 cover story in the December issue of EGM, we failed to notice the "Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360?" headline in the upper right corner. Any subscribers care to elaborate?[Update]
Che Chou, a former 1up staffer now working on Forza 2 for MS posted this response in the NeoGaf forums (Via Xboxic):
It's simply a rumor that Konami higher-ups are pressuring Kojima Productions to consider making MGS4 a multiplatform game because production costs on the game are unsurprisingly high and only getting higher. With PS3 install base numbers not looking all that rosy due to console cost and manufacturing problems, Konami is scared they can't recoup their investment on only 1 platform alone.
It's also a nice way to maybe blackmail Sony into giving Konami an incentive to keeping the game a PS3 exclusive, imo.
Whatever the case, I highly doubt it's going to happen so quit building yourself a disappointing kiloton bomb.
Either way, it's fun to see the PS3 fanboys sweat over losing their most prized exclusive.
[Thanks Luke]

What The Geek @ Oct 28th 2006 3:54PM
I can't say I'm suprised... If they want to sell games, they'll have to bring them to a platform that people can actually get a hold of.
Ben Furneaux @ Oct 28th 2006 4:20PM
If this turns out to be true I personally know at least 6 people who WON'T be buying a PS3, me included.
MGS is the Jewl in Sony's crown. Without it they are very close to being de-throned.
I can't think of many good IPs that Sony have excluisivly.
Clay @ Oct 28th 2006 4:34PM
This would be more a win for microsoft then a loss for sony.
MGS is NOT the jewel in Sony's crown and its silly to think so. the jewel in Sony's crown is RPGs it always has been. MGS2 came out on xbox but that didnt hurt the PS2 at all (granted it was much later).
On top of that, MGS has always sold much better in America then it has in Japan. If you recal MGS2 was released in America BEFORE Japan. How many times do you see a Japanese made came come out State side first? But with the next splinter cell being 360 exclusive, if MGS went multiplatform- fans of the genere would have litte reason to go PS3.

I say we start a petition to push Konami to do this, showing how many more people will buy this game if it comes to Xbox 360.

A blow to sony is always nice, but as far as I'm concerned, they can keep it. I am not a fan at all of the MGS games. Metal Gear Ac!d on the other hand, though... I'd love to see that series on the 360.

"MGS is NOT the jewel in Sony's crown and its silly to think so. the jewel in Sony's crown is RPGs it always has been. MGS2 came out on xbox but that didnt hurt the PS2 at all (granted it was much later)."
Seen any good, or any at all, for that matter, exclusive RPGs coming to the PS3? Neither have I. In all likelyhood, FF XIII will be on the 360 and PS3, but if it's not any better than XII, I won't really care either way. The 360 already has several solid RPGs (although most are only in Japan), and the best looking RPG coming is Lost Odessey, which is a 360 exclusive. I just wish they would bring Culdcept Saga and Far East of Eden out in the US, dammit. The only exclusives sony can count on are first party, and they are all crap, or at least not that great. Sony better REALLY hope Blu-Ray takes off (which it most likely won't), because their gaming front isn't looking too hot.
Count Chocula @ Oct 28th 2006 11:58PM
The PS3 will be crippled if MGS4 is on the 360. Seriously, lives will be lost.

"I can't think of many good IPs that Sony have excluisivly."
Gran Turi... no, wait, forza is better
Ratchet and Cl... nope, they screwed that up
Jack and Dax... nope, they screwed that up too
Sly... Never been a fan, but at least they haven't destroyed it yet
Untold Legends/Everquest Champions...Good solid series, but not a system seller
Hum, I guess they better hope Lair is REALLY good. Sony has always looked so good because so many companies have chosen to just make games for the PS2, because of the huge installed base. They aren't going to have that this go around, and there are going to be very few third-party PS3 exclusives, at least any time soon. The development costs are just too high to risk it all on a system that is only shipping 500,000 units this year.

Che gets right to the precipice and then refuses to acknowledge what he's seeing.
If it costs too much to make back their money, then it won't matter how much Sony hands them, or what the directorial vision is or any of that shit, it'll be about putting the project back in the black, and that will probably mean putting it on the green and white console.
Since that game still hasn't been dated for PS3 though...sitting down for a bit and appreciating the view of the awesome games already on your shelves (hopefully) isn't a bad idea.
Veron @ Oct 28th 2006 6:56PM
Have any of you seen the mgs4 trailer on psp's Metal Gear Acid 2, its the end of the trialer you should see in particular, I think thats enough to not make any Sony fans sweat :) I'n facy, its not even enough to make a Sony fan the slightest bit phased.

"Ratchet and Cl... nope, they screwed that up

Ew. Mario 64 clones.
I'm sure they are great games, but I just can't shake the image that they are merely rehashes on the Mario 64/Banjo Kazzoie formula.
BTW, I am NOT looking forward to the new Banjo game. That clunky game's legacy left a really sour taste in my mouth.
Lou @ Oct 28th 2006 8:17PM
Video games are approaching major motion picture production costs. I've heard FFXII figures in the $40million range. No one is going to want to spend this money and then cut out about half of the possible audience.
Think if Mission Impossible III (or any major blockbuster action movie) was only released to play on Sony DVD players. Oh wait, I was using this analogy and then I forgot the HD format war.
Ok, MI:3 was released only to Loews cinemas.
Shaymus22 @ Oct 28th 2006 8:32PM
If this was to happen, it would be a fatal blow to sony - they would be DONE for GOOD
Narhan @ Oct 28th 2006 10:57PM
No, what we need to do is send a petition to Sony that reads "White Knight will suck".
Sony will drop publishing rights Square (or any other 3rd party) will pick up the publishing rights and voila! Multi-console game!
Now as for Final Fantasy XIII...
refinedsugar @ Oct 28th 2006 11:59PM
Rumors feed on your interest ... wow MGS! ... your biases ... xbox360 > ps3 ... and they can be fun items to read, the kinda thing you keep tabs on in the back of your mind, but I don't see the point in dissecting mass marketing media speculation. Every second game related magazine you buy or see on the newsstand these days have some outrageous line splashed on the cover. Why? Because it sells magazines.
nick @ Oct 29th 2006 12:29AM
I don't think Sony is in a financial position to be offering incentives for exclusivity, and third parties, in this day and age, I'm surprised would offer anything exclusive without an incentive from a first party.
Veron @ Oct 29th 2006 7:15AM
Well, seeing how it has always been a playstation exclusive (sorta like GTA) I can't see why it would release on 360, and the trailer on the PSP Metal Gear Acid 2 told me otherwise.
Tony @ Oct 29th 2006 10:39AM
Except the major GTA games all hit Xbox and the next one is coming to 360 as well. So that really isn't a great example.
I wouldn't be surprised if this happens, either way. At the same time, it's kind of absolutely bizarre to stuff a freaking rumor on your cover and then act annoyed and surprised by the fact that people are getting overly excited about it.
It's like two steps away from tabloids.
footlong! @ Oct 29th 2006 11:03AM
I WILL NOT buy this game for PS3.
I WILL buy it for the 360.
Konami, use your heads.
refinedsugar @ Oct 29th 2006 12:57PM
Well said, Tony.

"18. Well, seeing how it has always been a playstation exclusive (sorta like GTA)"
Uhhh wrong, GTA started on the PC and stayed there until GTA 3. It's never been a Playstation exclusive except for the 6 month lead time on San Andreas. Feel free to pull your head outta your ass anytime now.
juggy @ Oct 29th 2006 2:24PM
if konami doesnt bring this game to 360 then they are shooting themselves in the foot. why wouldnt you bring it to 360? nowadays exclusivity is to much of a cost and if you look at the ea(undoubtably the most commercial gaming company available) the reason they have so much money is because they dont stick to one console. it doesnt matter if they come out with the same game every single yr, they make their money not because its a blockbuster game but because they bring to all platforms available. its like poker. you dont want to make bet of a thousand to go toe2toe with the chip leader and lose, you want to make a bet of 100 and bring in 8 other players and make the money. this way if they lose then they lose small change. they have to understand that the 360 isnt in the same position that the xbox was in. its no longer trying to just penetrate the market, they are now a major player in the market and they cannot be denied or just swept under the rug. to do this would be a grave mistake and i just dont think its worth avoiding the 360. its just too good.
its got too many things going for it.
POW! HOW YOU LIKE DAT!!
Veron @ Oct 29th 2006 4:53PM
The reason I put "Sorta" there Maxuimus, coming from a guy whos heads probably been up his ass his whole life.
Have you forgotten the GTA series has been on the PS1 as well, right besides the PC, they only started "porting" to the Xbox you mean at GTA3. And in terms of games consoles and not PCs, yeah, GTA has pretty much been a PS exclusive until Xbox came about.
MGS had been a nes exclusive, then it switched to PS and stayed there until MGS2 which every game it made was ported to Xbox up to a year or slightly less after the PS.
konami isn't shooting themselves in any foot, yeah they won't make as much money, but it was the PS fans that made MGS, it was the PS that made MGS, and are you forgetting they are both Japanese companies :) A deed for a deed :)
Besides, Xbox360 has loads of exclusives, what are you moaning about :P You have Spliter Cell don't you? Why do you need MGS4? Lol
Veron @ Oct 29th 2006 4:54PM
Oh, btw, Konami said that in order to understand the plot, you would need PO on PSP, and seeing as PSP is Sony's, it would be stupid releasing MGS4 on Xbox360.
Thats like releasing Halo3 (Never happen but using as example for "series" purposes) on PS3, we wouldn't have the slightest clue whats going on in the plot.
And by the looks of it, Sony is helping Konami on the MGS4 movie, not certain, again just rumours. If its true, Kojima has more reason to stick exclusive, the trailer on the Metal Gear Acid 2 PSP told me one thing about MGS4 "PS3".
I'm excited about MGS4 :)
phantom 018 @ Oct 29th 2006 7:17PM
Does anyone know what the WIi reiews were like. I'm interested to know what games they were able to review.
Konchu @ Oct 30th 2006 3:04PM
I really dont doubt it may come out for the 360 as the xbox did get some of the other versions. I suspect they will but I am just curious if there will be a gap of limited exclusivity as it has seen in the past. I am hoping for side by side launch though.
