Random GOW thing: a tattoo (it's real)
This is just getting ridiculous. In a twisted version of a Klondike Bar commercial, some guy is so crazy about Gears of War, he got a tattoo. Like, a really real tattoo. The grisly design depicts a red gear emblazoned with a skull tearing its way through his flesh. According to Major Nelson (it's his Flickr account) this guy was actually flown in by MTV, claiming to be the most hardcore Gears fan alive. Let's hope the game lives up to its reputation, because this guy's arm depends on it! It's not like he'll be able to turn that thing into a heart with "MOM" in the center if the game turns out to be crap.Have any of you gotten a GOW tatoo? Done anything else crazy in anticipation of the game?
[Thanks, Doc P]

I don't understand why someone would want that tattoo for life... I mean, what if the game turns out to not be as good as the hype? Thats just my opinion, I could never get a permanent tattoo.
alex @ Nov 1st 2006 3:41PM
why would you get a tattoo on the lower part of your arm. It would look best on top on your shoulder.
Russell @ Nov 1st 2006 3:41PM
Once I did something really crazy in anticipation for a game. Right before Oblivion came out....I got really really excited, like OMG!!1!!11!
As for the dude with a Gears tat, what a fucking moron. He has no clue what the game is going to be like, it won't come out for another 6 days. How could a person possibly be so stupid and buy into pre-video game hype so much that they go out and permanently scar their arm just for the love of a game that they've never played?
Neoxkc @ Nov 1st 2006 3:42PM
Also, tattoo has 2 t's there is only one in the title. And I wouldn't have gotten that tattoo, but even if the game sucks, the logo is pretty damn cool.

"Also, tattoo has 2 t's there is only one in the title."
Grrr... Fixed.

I assume its a promotional temporary tatoo, its pretty common place as a pr thing especially at something for a 'young' 'street' audience......although having said that it looks pretty real, it has shadows.
Carmine Granucci @ Nov 1st 2006 3:57PM
Oh... now it makes sense. I was at the event. MTV was following this guy around with their cameras. Probably making some docu-drama around his "obsession".
Silver R. Wolfe @ Nov 1st 2006 3:56PM
This guy is a moron. For one, even if the game turns out to be good (which I'm doubting) that's not a very good tattoo.
sintax @ Nov 1st 2006 3:58PM
I can see where everyone is coming from with the comments above if the game turns out to be horrible, but look at it from his perspective. He is obviously a huge GoW fan so he will probably like the game regardless. He got treated like royalty for a day(s) by having MTV fly him over to the party and I'm sure he got to meet some of the people that worked on the game, not to mention obviously play it before the release, etc. I'm sure they also flipped the bill for the tattoo.
To him, it was probably something that he will never forget and tell the story to people for years to come. In the end, isn't that what a tattoo is in a sense... something you want to remember for the rest of your life (either being good or bad)?
Just my two cents.
Xerotime @ Nov 1st 2006 4:02PM
wow that is a pretty bad tattoo...I see a cover up in that guys future
Bennyishere @ Nov 1st 2006 4:08PM
It doesn't matter if Gears of War will be good or not. It's a friggin' sweet tattoo anyway! It doesn't even say Gears of War, it's just the skull.
Point is, don't just categorize it as hype. It's an awesome tattoo AND hype :P
I want one like that, and I don't even think I'll consider buying Gears of War.
Doc P @ Nov 1st 2006 4:24PM
this is a huge win for the GOW marketing machine.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 1st 2006 4:27PM
"this is a huge win for the GOW marketing machine."
And a huge loss for that douche's love life when he has to explain to the ladies what that's a tat of.
R. Kassam @ Nov 1st 2006 5:00PM
Actually, tattoo has 3 t's :)
Art Vandelay @ Nov 1st 2006 5:00PM
I dont think its bad. Regardless of the game being good or bad (Im sure this game will be great) the logo is awesome. Ive seen plenty of skull tattoos this is just a diffent type which happens to be the logo for GOW. Had he actually put the name Gears Of War then he would be in a bit of trouble. I think it looks sick. It was well done.
Ive seen guys put crazier things on them with ink, like a girls name. Try explaining that once the relationship is over.
NEO1X @ Nov 1st 2006 5:45PM
I don't think that most of the guys that comment or read this site have to worry about girlfriends cause they don't have em and they won't get em...
Aaron @ Nov 1st 2006 6:02PM
1. That's a poor quality tattoo.
2. It doesn't match the real Gears logo (the tatoo skull simply looks like a generic tattoo shop stencil).
3. Even as a teen, I knew that any cool pop-culture tattoo would look tired in 20 years, no matter what the subject. I've never gotten one, but if I had as a teen, it would have been an Iron Maiden tattoo with the mascott Eddie...Thank got a had a shred of forsight back then.
4. I have a friend who's covered in tattoos and he says that each reminds him of a different time in his life when he got the tat...good or bad. AKA to each thier own.
Insomnious @ Nov 2nd 2006 10:31AM
Oh jesus.
Being the absolute sucker for hype and word-of-mouth that this guy apparently is, he'll either love it or hate it, depending on whether he reads the IGN or Gamespot review.

eekkk thats an ugly version of the beautiful graphic gears logo.. almost a cute skull, i can see it with top hat and a cigar! lol

You have our sympathy NEO1X, have you tried a dating site? being fixed up by friends? There is hope for even you to find someone. Don't worry about the rest of us.
It is obviously an issue you are working through, we are here for support buddy.
kyle @ Nov 1st 2006 7:23PM
apparently i'm the only one with ink on here. it's highly unlikely that it's a real tattoo. it's definitely not fresh ink, and if it were a real tattoo, that's showing wear of 6+ months, given the color gradiant.
i'm not saying that it's definitely fake, but if it's real, it's 6+ months old.
Sunny @ Nov 1st 2006 9:32PM
Who cares how the game turns out? Tattoos are supposed to be cool pieces of art... and that right there is pretty cool.
Neoxkc @ Nov 1st 2006 10:40PM
@ R. Kassam
Nice, that's funny.
@ Concerned Gamer
Is that directed at me? If so, you are an idiot, I pointed out the typo so some jackass wouldn't come in later and say: "OMG JOYSTIQ HAS BAD GRAMMAR!!!!!!11!!1!!!, etc.
So F*** off.

9P @ Nov 2nd 2006 12:23AM
it would be cool if it actually looked like the GOW logo...that looks like a regular skull in the middle of a regular cog. Oh well, at least it's permanant.
I sure hope this game isn't all hype, you wouldn't believe how many GOW fanboys came to my blog about GoW being hype and chewed me out, virtually of course. If you want to read the comments go here, http://reviewsblog.sonsofgodclan.net
