Blue Dragon: more discs = better game
The first game to bite the DVD format bullet and come on three (yes count 'em, three) DVDs is none other than Blue Dragon. IGN has pictures of the packaging in all its three disc glory. Amazingly enough, all the discs fit in one normal sized DVD case. Microsoft is also throwing a launch party in Japan and beaming a countdown to launch clock on the side of an abandoned building. But back to the goods. Three discs could be seen as the negative effects of not including an HD player into the 360 ... but I'm the optimistic type and say three discs is extremely bad ass. You could use the extra discs as ninja stars! Anyway, I'm putting my yearly blogging salary ($4.65) on Halo 3 coming out on seven discs ... any takers?

I'm starting to get pumped about this game, the multiple disk games take me back to my FF7 days when I opend up the case and realised I had a long journey ahead of me.

Yea FF7 ruled with its 5 discs, made it seem like such a epic and long game. It was of course but we all know most of the space was used on CG movies. Anyway I too am starting to really get syched about this game.

3 discs is fine for an RPG where you might swap a disc after a week or so, but it'll never happen for an FPS unless they cram the Halo movie on there as FMV sequences.

Yeah, remember, alot of Real-time assets take much less space then pre-rendered movies. Most of the space on these disks is taken up by pre-rendered 720p video. In fact any japanese developer who's complained about DVD space it has been about adding HD video. Not Real Time content.

halo 3 on 7 Discs... not only disc changes for ever weapon but also blue screens for everyone else in the game each time also... more bluescreen is always fun!!!

#3 check you copy of FF7 again, it was only 3 discs and the final disc just held the ending, unless you're talking about the PC version.

Oh no, not another flippin JRPG with discs crammed full of FMV rather than, y'know, a game. :-(
Why can't these people use in-engine graphics like GOW and Dead Rising? (In Dead Rising you know it's in-engine because your clothes are different in the cut-scenes when you have changed them!)

Agreed with #13. We're getting to the point where the cinematics in FF12 could be very very closely recreated within an advanced 3D engine. With graphical quality the way it is, why aren't we doing more with in-engine assets? Not only does it remove the jarring "hey, you're not playing the game anymore" transitions between CG and real-time, it might give us a game on a single disc!

Although some folks might think that having 3 DVDs shows you how long and great the game will be, I think this one time, that Microsoft looks dumb. I mean if they make a big deal about not needing an HD format disc, then why release games on multiple DVDs. That being said, Blu-ray is way overhyped.

If the 3 DVDs are full wouldn't that be roughly 27gb. That is more than what is on the current PS3 Blu Ray 25gb discs, or at least until they up to the 50gb. So conceivably this game would have been on two PS3 discs, not to mention that currently it is taking more room to code for the additional processors on a PS3. 2 PS3 discs would have been very probable.
I'm not that worried about it. How large is Gears of War? After less than a year, if a game engine can produce something of the quality of the commercial, I'm not worried. Also, there are other ways to cut space, using in game enging for cut scense, procedural textures that make all the textures in game, better compression, etc.
I can't imagine what PS3 will be putting on those 50gb discs unless they are throwing in tons of extras.

Right now if you eject a disc during the game it pops back to the dashboard is there an ingame function that makes the 360 wait for a disc
or could we be getting an update? with an also optional boot whatever is on the dvd drive with insert?
cause i hate it when i put in a game and it boots it when im playing an arcade game

3 discs!!! thats 25.5GB....which is virtually the same size as a single layered blu-ray disc...coincidence...?
that is way to big of a game...I garantee most of it is crap CGI that gamers dont care much about...we want to play the game...not watch it.

I'll take that bet. If Halo 3 is really that much more expansive than the previous installments and needs that much more space, I'd be willing to bet that as the H3 launch day draws closer we start hearing rumors of an updated 360 with a built in HD-DVD drive, HDMI, the whole nine yards. It's not hard to imagine that they could get the production costs down enough by then to maintain the $399 premium price point.
