Moore: 360 sales to exceed 10 million goal
Forget those fabricated stories about the 360's lackluster sales, because Peter Moore has the real goods. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Peter Moore reiterated Microsoft's goal of selling 10 million 360s by year's end. What's more, he states that Microsoft is well on their way to exceeding that number, thanks to strong sales during Thanksgiving. Said Moore, "They key is we're in stock, we're available, we're delivering well to retail. Certainly the consumer is recognizing the fact that we have a great price point as well as 160 games available and that flies in the face of our competition."Certainly, those are all great selling points for gift givers. Do you know anyone who picked up a 360 when there were no Wiis or PS3s to be had?

If I were a parent picking up a 360 instead of a PS3, I would be VERY scared of the temper tantrum that ensues after my brat of a kid screams at me for getting him an "Xcrap 3-crappy" instead of "Glorious Gaming Goddess: PS3".
Of course, if my kid ever pulled one of those, I'd roll him clean across the room for being a brat. That's right. I'll spank my kid if he so much as mentions chocolate milk.
See, that's the problem with 360's strategy this Christmas. They think that they can win a heavily brand-based fight with a replacement, price-leader strategy. The net will be FLOODED with brat you tube videos on Christmas because of this strategy...which, ironically, is positive press for MS, showing that Sony fans are ignorant little brats.
At least, that's one way I see the Christmas battle playing out...

#1, that seems like a fine strategy. After all, little Johnny will definitely not be getting a PS3 after mom & dad already bought him the Xbox360 and that works just fine for Microsoft. If they did buy one, I would approve the spanking of the parents along with the kid.

my kids are a little young to be complaining about video game systems, but spank the brat hard imho.
i worry that the favorable treatment gamers receive compared to sony will end if MS assumes the dominant position in North America.
I heard on the train ride home on the night of the PS3 launch that someone wouldn't buy a 360 instead of a PS3 because he heard it was a bad product. I think that the bad press from the red ring of death has definately reached the masses.
Whether it's true or not, we really haven't heard nearly as many stories about failed consoles from Sony or Nintendo. I don't know if there's anything to that, but it sure feels like it.
Lastly, the real truth in this war lies on the supply side and I think that in North America, Sony is just way too far behind to catch up. They continue to lose ground every day now and won't be on the same supply as Microsoft until mid-2007. By then, MS will have an installed base that Sony will not be able to overcome.

I know up in Canada a lot of the stores had sales on the PS3 and Wii launch days to encourage people to buy 360s. It's also had really good word of mouth over the last year, and has impressed people with games like Gears of War and Xbox Live. Even my folks used to use mine to view pictures, listen to music and watch TV.
In terms of actualy numbers I know 6 people who got 360 in the last month, 5 people who got Wiis, and 0 who got PS3s.
In my personal opinion this kind of article rings true with what I've seen and I'm sure MS has seen a recent spike in 360 sales. Whether it continues over the holidays and is enough to push MS over 10 million remains to be seen.
Xbox360andMe @ Dec 6th 2006 12:52PM
The brats that got a Xbox 360 instead of a PofS3 will be thanking there parents later and personally thanking Uncle Bill for saving them from the crash and burn Sony will be taking and allowing them to experience a superior online service with Xbox live let alone a huge library of games to enjoy in HD glory with less load times.
Gdiddy056 @ Dec 6th 2006 12:55PM
I know of 1 person who bought a 360 instead of PS3 ( really just for Gears) Do not underestimate PS brand loyality ! I know of 15-20 people who will wait it out till they are in stock no matter how long.
MS to date has sold roughly just over 8 million units that's alot of systems to move in just a few weeks. My money says M$ misses their 10 mil. target
tacklebox @ Dec 6th 2006 1:40PM
I have alot of friends that were sony people thru and thru. Even back when I was a N64 guy they were all about the ps1. They all bought a xbox after owning a ps2 originally so we could all play LAN halo. They all bought 360s and are so impressed with the level of quality of the system, the controller, accessories and especially the online service. A sony fanboy given a 360 after having some time with it will no longer be a sony fanboy. The 360 is that much more impressive than the over priced failing to deliver, ps3.
LunarDuality @ Dec 6th 2006 1:14PM
I think "Junior" will be excited if he gets a 360, 3 games, an extra controller, and a 12 month subscription for Xbox Live as opposed to just the PS3 and maybe one game. That's personally how I'd look at it (same money, more stuff)...it makes the 360 even more attractive IMO.
KilgoreTrout XL @ Dec 6th 2006 1:26PM
No, though I do know a PC gamer (WoW, mostly) who is going to buy one this weekend after I showed him Gears.
Seriously, you give a guy 20 minutes to get the controls down on that game and they're just hooked.
BklynKid @ Dec 6th 2006 1:46PM
This pleases the fanboy in me.
Shaggy Goat @ Dec 6th 2006 1:53PM
The 360 will hit there 10 mil mark. Because of Gears being a "holiday killer app" and the PS3 shortage. Have you seen the abundance of 360s at Best Buy? I admit PS3 fanboys are not that bright and they are die hard when it comes to brand loyality. But little Jimmy, would be happy with any video game system under the tree as long as "the graphics are good".

Most people don't know that the consoles are going to basically be a wash as far as gaming goes, it's all about personal preference. The people that aren't up on gaming will just think that the PS3 is better because it's newer. I had a buddy ask me about which do I think he should get, he said that the PS3 was going to have better graphics because of the Blue-Ray drive, and you see, thats how most people think when it comes to decide which console to purchase.
I had him play a few rounds of GoW and Rainbow Six and he decided that he's getting a 360...

Look how impressive the Wii sales numbers are because of price point and availability.
Makes you think if the PS3s were $300 cheaper using a regular DVD drive instead of forcing a Blu-ray player on us, Sony could have been some serious competition for the holidays. You won't see PS3 numbers go up alot until April/May when more systems are available. PS3 fanboys and the Asian market will still buy the PS3. 8 million units is pretty impressive for the 360. That is pretty big lead.
intRvenous @ Dec 6th 2006 3:36PM
Gears is the feather in their cap, not lack of PS3's... not to mention the insane '07 lineup for 360.
I saw lots of 360 + Gears in the checkout line over Thxgiving. Which raises the question: if great games are the anwser, why not spend the $$$ to find more Cliffy B's? I mean he's brilliant guy, but surely there must be other dedicated creative folks that can pull-off GoW quality games...

I have this one friend; huge mac advocate, anti microsoft, and fan of the playstation line. the latter part is a regular discussion of debate, as for some reason, she's under the impression that it's a quality product.
anyway, years ago... I introduce her to Morrowind. she's instantly addicted. she's explored every nook and cranny of the game.
enter oblivion... which is obviously THE game for her. She purchased it on release day, though she didn't have a 360. financial mishaps prevent her from getting a 360, and one day, I informed her that it is in fact coming for the ps3.
the answer: why the hell would I pay $500 for it? ouch... that and she already purchased oblivion for the 360.
So... she ordered her 360, which I do believe is arriving today, and I will be uploading the extras.
though, it's less about the console, and more about a vehicle for oblivion.
Taylor @ Dec 6th 2006 6:51PM
Sony are arrogent fools! If they werent idiots and pushed the Blu-ray, there wouldnt be supply shortages, it wouldnt cost so much, and the load times would be better...But im am glad Sony are fools, it is Microsoft and Nintendo's time to shine ;)
DjDATZ @ Dec 6th 2006 11:12PM
Wii is raping Sony. And 8mil consoles already...wow...ps3 has alot to catch up.

Having recently moved to Singapore from Chicago I was sad to miss the US launches... Was looking forward to getting the Wii but alas there is still no release date here. Have been reading Joystiq heavily for the past few weeks/months and there has been so much positive news about the 360 including the great games out/coming soon.
This last weekend I bought a 360 with DOA4, Table Tennis, Gears of War, and Viva Pinata for the fiancee (which she really digs ;). Am looking forward to Small Arms, Geometry Wars and Lost Planet. Also hoping for Virtua Tennis 3 sooner rather than later.
I may still get a Wii but will most likely be mid to late next year since I have allot to keep me busy.
Also worth noting I skipped the last gen (PS1 being my most recent console) and have been PC gaming till now.

I'm pretty sure that this is more or less on topic. Do you think after the holiday or during the rush. The 360 will be at a discounted price. I figure after the holidays only to make the most money. Or for the same price are they going to include some kind of free game or two (like the original Xbox with SegaGT and that Rollerblade game). I'm personally waiting for that to happen only because I don't need to have it ASAP. But does anyone have any info on this as far as future pricing?
