With all the NPD
buzz going on today it looks like nobody really touched on the Playstation 3's shipment numbers. If you remember, Sony cut its initial 2006 shipment to the United States from
1,000,000 units to a more realistic 400,000. Since the PS3 launch, Sony has been very mum about sales figures and today we found out why. According to
NPD sales data Sony only shipped 197,000 units to the US in November missing their promised 400,000. Looks like 1,000,000 units by the end of the year may be a tad hard to achieve ... oops, I mean a tad hard to
entitle.

You know, I don't hate the PS3 or think it's rubbish, I just hate that Sony lie about everything. Release dates, ship quotas, realistic history with giant crabs, really just the whole lot. I know they did this with the PS2 as well, but this time round seems to have been much worse.
That said, the only thing they seem to have announced that was on target was the phenomenal price point.

The other side of the coin (from sister site www.bloggingstocks.com) :
Microsoft's Xbox sales fail to impress
http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2006/12/08/microsofts-xbox-sales-fail-to-impress/
The Xbox is supposed to be part of Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ:MSFT) plan to diversify beyond Windows. Other initiatives like its Zune multimedia player are off to a slow start. The company's online initiatives are behind those of Internet giants Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG).
But, market research firm NPD indicates the Xbox 360 sales may not be doing too well. Xbox 360 sales in the first 13 months that the product has been in stores are 6% higher than the regular old Xbox. That product was introduced in November 2001.
Six percent is not much. With Sony Corp.'s (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation 3 somewhat slow in getting to market, Microsoft should have expected more.
At least the Nintendo Wii is selling well.

it wasn't so much a console launch, more of a pre-release... maybe next year when they actually launch the PS3 people will be more interested in buying one for something other than a "get rich quick" scheme on ebay.

Why is PS3 info like this on a Xbox blog site?

Doesn't joystiq hate on the ps3 enough? Besides, competition is a good thing. MS doesn't need any encouragement to become (more) shoddy.
JimyD @ Dec 8th 2006 6:39PM
The launch numbers for the PS3 are pathetic but I doubt the executives at Sony are losing any sleep over it since the company’s six-year old console is still outselling the competition.
Console Sales in N. America (November):
PS2 = 664,000
Xbox 360 = 511,000
Wii = 476,000

That statement is very misleading. It should read:
"According to sales data from The NPD Group, U.S. sales of the Xbox 360 video game system during its first 13 months in stores were 6 percent higher than comparable sales of the original Xbox, which launched in November 2001."
http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12405/Xbox-360-Selling-Better-Than-The-Original-Xbox/
meaning that the 360 has 6% more sales when compared to the xbox in the same point in their life cycles.

Interesting.
It's still easier to find a PS3 than a Wii in my area.
Let's face it; the prices of the PS3 and the 360 are going to have to come down. The top sellers are under $200, and have plenty of games (DS, PS2). The PS3 is $500+ the 360 is $300+ and their libraries are relatively small. Low price and decent library have to come together. Unfortunately, the 'cube and original Xbox failed the latter (their successors won't have the same problem).
The Wii is probably at the sweet spot for the time being...if they had 4 times as many units available, they would sell them quick...even with only one stand-out game.

I read the article and i loved this part!
"In its first month on the market in November 2005, Xbox 360 did a better job at selling games than PlayStation 3 did in its first month, according to Microsoft spokeswoman Molly O'Donnell. One Xbox 360 debut title, ``Call of Duty 2'' sold more copies in November 2005 than Sony's entire portfolio of games sold in November 2006, she said."
Inspired @ Dec 8th 2006 10:19PM
The only reason PS3 is in a bad light is because of Sony PR. They had an almost guaranteed win from last gen, and they got so cocky that it HURTS. They've lost exclusivity on important titles. Someone in the Sony PR department should've been fired a LONG time ago.

The 360 costs twice as much as the original xbox, so in terms of dollar sales, they have more than doubled the amount of money people were willing to spend on their system. Thats pretty good going if you ask me.
Compare Apples to Apples, for its price range the xbox360 is the best selling console ever.
I doubt that Sony are exstatic over the high PS2 sales but poor PS3 sales, I mean what must they make off a PS2, $10?
More revealing is that Gears Of War Outsold Final Fantasy (for a console with 10 times the install base of the 360), thats what developers are going to be looking at - and games make the system.

@ #10 when did the 1st xbox launch at $150-$200 as i recall the xbox cost just as much as the core system does now

This is so like Sony.. lies, scams, hype, hype and more HYPE... and then some lies. And Sony fanboys just follow this company like brain dead sheeps. Wake up people there are better companies to give your time and money that CARE about you. cough...cough..microsoft..cough..
Roofus @ Dec 9th 2006 11:31AM
#5, several key launches will assure that PS2 outsells every system in 2007 as well.
