Yawn ... 256MB memory card is coming

Gamestop has a page up on their online store for the "yet to be officially confirmed" 256MB 360 memory card. Currently, the only official memory card offering is the 64MB version, so the new 256MB card would offer a super duper 4x more storage!That is if my math is correct.

I'm less than enthused about the prospect of a new memory card release due to its price being $59.99 and since I have never used my 64MB card. Anyone use memory cards with their 360? I don't see them necessary, because that's why we have removable hard drives. So, I laugh at your puny 64MB and 256MB memory cards kids. Ha!

The nice thing about bigger memory cards is that it's rumored that they will raise the size cap on XBLA games as well, thus allowing bigger games for everyone.

I use the memory card for taking my gamertag to play on my mate's xbox. Can't you get a 1GB flash drive for like £15, why are we being ripped off for a 256MB memory card!

I think the PS3 can use SD cards for memory can't it? I use mine to take my profile and a game save or two to my brother's place and that's it.

Considering that I just paid $50 for a 4 Gigabyte thumbdrive, I would say this offering is an insult.

Like monkeeboy, I also use my memory card to take my gamertag and game saves with me when I visit friends. One time, I used it to take an XBLA game with me. But it is overpriced. I'd only buy it for the purpose of taking your gamertag with you.

Oh, and having a memory unit and an HDD came in handy for Dead Rising b/c it gave me an extra save spot, although I didn't really use it too much.

I bought one (used) to download the Burnout theme at Target back when that was the only way to acquire it. Now I use it for backup saves for certain games like NHL 07 and Rumble Roses XX. That said, $60 for a 256mb card is a joke. But, then again, so is $100 for a 20gb hd.

It's great for a backup of a save. Some games, like Dead Rising and Gears of War, only allow one save. The memory card gives a second. Plus, with the purchase of my second 360, I put my ID on the card and then I can move between machines and keep my settings the same. I was surprised it even copies over your gamerpic and theme!

Yeah, it's really most useful for situations where you have people gathering at one location who all have 360s.

You can then have each person logged on to their own gamertag.

Remember that there are some games that allow a party of people to use one console and compete online or over a network.

Well, there's some people out there that do not have a platinum system and have to use these. These are also good for transferring saves and whatnot.

Also, the larger memory unit will more than likely do one thing, raise the developer size limit of Xbox Live Arcade games. So it will have a positive effect there.

I'm getting the 64mb card for xmas simply because i want to backup my many hours in oblivion. A bit price for that purpose but it's the only backup option i'm aware of.

I have a 64MB memory card xChange 360 program where I can download game saves and use them, like rosters for NCAA Football 2007 and College Hoops 2K7.

i use a memory card, i save all my game data on it incase of a ring of death.

also i have my gamertag on it so i can play on my gf's brother's 360 when i'm there

having a portible save solution is very useful, but i would still never give up the harddrive

I'm surprised that only one person mentioned this (Pat Cavit), not even the poster mentioned it. But with the release of a bigger Memory Unit, this will mean the 50mb download cap will be extended to about 250mb with this new MU.

Sure, we got games like RoboBlitz down to 50mb, but something like Lumines was crippled (and mictotransactioned) because only 12 songs and the game could fit on 50mb of space.

So Microsoft, please release this Memory Unit alread, even though I won't be buying it.

I picked up a used memory card for the sole purpose of having a portable profile. That way when I go to a friends home I can unlock achievements to my profile.

It also serves as a good way to backup game saves and bring them to friends too.

You don't need the 256meg card for that.

Being too expensive is part of the industry. How many Sony and Nintendo branded objects are inflated. The memory card should still cost more than a usb thumb drive since there is more circuitry involved (a security chip). But still...

You don't discover the uses of the memory card til you need it. I got the ring of death a couple of weeks ago, and I got a card so I could get all my game saves by using my hd on my friends 360. It worked, aside from DOA4, since Team Ninja has to make everything ultra difficult and won't let you copy game saves. Now I unlocked everyone again in DOA and saved it to my memory card so I won't have to loose it when I go through my next 360. Also, as many have mentioned, there's the whole portable profile thing, which would work great for gears of war if you want to play online at a friends.

Instead of using a memory card to transfer your profile to another 360, isn't there a way to just retrieve your XBL gamertag?

Yes, you can retrieve your gamertag without transferring it. When I was backing up mine, it only gave me the option to move the profile, and not copy it. At the time I figured this was to keep your gamertag only in one place at any time (so that multiple people couldn't sign in with the same gamertag, which I'm pretty sure the system won't let happen though). Anyways, when I got my new 360, and did intial setup, I retrieved my gamertag instead of copying it from the card (since setup asks you to set up a profile before you have access to the memory settings). So now I have my profile on my hd and my card.
