PSM readers, just give in and buy GoW

If you are a regular reader of Playstation Magazine ( ... ewww) you'll notice February's edition has a familiar game ad on the back. It looks like Microsoft bought some prime ad space on the back of the PSM magazine promoting none other than Gears of War. And why not? The PS3 fanboys need something to dream about and everyone knows they wish they could have Gears. We say just give in to your urges already guys, drop the PS3, and buy a Xbox 360 ... Gears is patiently waiting for you.
[Thanks, Jonah]

GoW is soooo good. How could they resist. I finally broke down and bought a 360 to play it and the tons of other good games coming to the 360.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Jan 26th 2007 1:26AM
Good stuff.. What would be even funnier, is if that PSM's cover had "Gran Turismo HD Exclusive!!" with the PG3 screen that happened earlier.
Nick Nelson @ Jan 26th 2007 1:26AM
That's awesome advertising. You would think they wouldn't allow it, but I guess money talks. Honestly though there are 3 PS3's just sitting on the shelves at both local Wal-Mart's here. Let's face it, till costs come down or games worth playing make it out it's over for the PS3. Not to mention the horrible online system, from what I've heard I've got no problems paying for live.

Gears of War, God of War, Gears of War, God of War...

The sad part is sony has only sold (actually shipped) Around 3 million ps3s. Ps3 can now be found in stores on the shelves. Yet a large percentage of ps3 buyers bought the system for blu-ray functionality only. You should see the ammount of customers who are middle aged men who care nothing for gaming but pick up a ps3 for blu-ray since its cheap. I would guestimate at least 100 000 ps3s sold were for blu-ray movie only playback.
Things just look worse and worse for sony everyday. I would say xbox needs to worry about nintendo but I dont think they do. Nintendo looks like they will catch the xbox or even pass it in sales, but I expect another late game flop for nintendo like the gamecube. Meaning shortage of quality games + lack of online focus will kill the system early like GC.
I also wonder why so many people praise nintendo for making a 42% increase in profits? I like Ms better as a company, who is willing to take large hits for years to provide us with amazing games and services, where nintendo makes everything reall dated and crappy, but can make a profit right away. I care about my entertainment, not a companies profit. If a company profits at the birth of a system, I see that as a greedy company who is overcharging. Wii should be like $199 or even $150

Forget Gears (the 10000000000th 360 shooter, that only sold 3m compared to God of war sales in the same space of time :P And is yet again another braindead shooter with shiny graphics) Gears is for minors :P
Its GOD OF WAR ALL THE WAY BABY! Bring on the beasts! Couldn't be more excited for this game :)

@14 You're comparing 2 completely different games. Gears is the whole package (single player story, online multiplayer, co-op story and the best graphics to date). If you like playing with yourself...I mean playing by yourself, enjoy last gen graphics and playing on an inferior system then by all means stick with your God of War on PS2. When you're ready to step up to a real game on a real system you can come back and post here.
Edge of Blade @ Jan 26th 2007 8:22AM
This sounds like bad gamer porn: Owned in the Rear.
Seriously, the back cover is much more interesting than the front. God of War is ridiculously overrated. I guess you can make any game good if you put random breasts in it...
Boff @ Jan 26th 2007 8:58AM
Just to stir things up a little, I came from the PS2 to the 360 and loved God of War all the way through. Gears is amazing too and the multiplayer is mucho fun.
Have to say, if GoW2 (God of War 2) was on the 360 I'd pick it up in a snap.
It's like comparing oranges to apples though - they're completely different games so why not like both?
And just for the record I'd have Gears2 in a heartbeat aswell ;o)
Boff @ Jan 26th 2007 9:03AM
And I wonder how many parents are going to walk into their local game shop and demand Gears for the PS3 after seeing (or their kids showing them) the ad?
Or want 'the cool yellow car off that website' in their GT:HD?!
Thomas @ Jan 26th 2007 9:19AM
Oh I've been so tempted to get a 360... I think I can hold off until Chrismas 07. I'm still satisfied with the Playstation 3 for now.. there's a space for my future 360...
Vader582 @ Jan 26th 2007 10:18AM
We're acting like this is the first time competitors have advertised strategically? This has been done before...
Don Wilson @ Jan 26th 2007 10:19AM
I definitely agree with the "(... ewww)" comment.
AL7AIR @ Jan 26th 2007 10:27AM
The bigger question than "How much did they pay for the ad?" is "When will 'fanboy'-sites stop bashing the other system and stick to their own little box?" or are you all starting flame wars on purpose to get more comments?
I, and I hope I don't speak for myself here, like all three of the current and the last gen consoles. If you really sit there waiting for every single gamer to buy a single console - yours - than I'm really sorry for you. Enjoy all of them and the different games on them.
The whole ad thing is funny, so I certainly don't mind if you report on it, but keep the bashing to yourself.

Been a Playstation Fanboy since the original... Purchased my PS3 at launch and have no regrets...I thinks it's an amazing system...even if it has only one good current-gen game (RFoM), which I thoroughly enjoyed by the way. Of course, there's two generations of great games to fall back on too, so the lack of current-gen games really isn't a big deal (finished up with Bully and playing through Okami now...both great games). Having said that, when Toys R Us offered a $100 gift card with the purchase of a 360 this past December, it was a deal too good for me to resist. And much like the PS3, I do not regret my purchase in the least. I'm very impressed with all the capabilities of the 360 (the media sharing blows my mind) including the graphics. I flew through Gears and was giddy at the graphics and gameplay...one of the best games I've ever played. Now I'm messin around with Viva Pinata and having a blast. My plan is this: For all multi-platform games I'm interested in, I will wait until it's out on both systems and, based on the average of all the reviews on gamerankings.com, I will purchase it for the system with the higher marks...simple. Of course, exclusives for both systems (of which there are and will be many outstanding choices) will take the guesswork out entirely. So, I suggest to anyone, if it's within your means, to go out and purchase both systems. It's undeniably the best of both worlds, as they are both fantastic systems with different strengths and weaknesses, and great games. Oh, and for the record, God of War is an amazing game. Anyone who says otherwise clearly has either not played it, or is such a Sony-hater that they refuse to admit to themselves, and everyone else, that it's amazing. 360 and PS3 both rule! Peace!

It's a great time to be a 360 owner and it's only going to get better. The lineup for 2007 is amazing for both 360 and PS3 so it should be an exciting year for both camps.

people didnt like GOW beacuse it had random tits. its becuase of the great story and perfect use of gore.
and gears of ar wasnt that good IMO. i have played it and beaten it and I thought it was just okay. there isnt anything that is new in that game. besides better graphics and a chainsaw-gun. and i thought the blood looked completely fake in that game.it looked like water with red color in it.
Jonah Falcon @ Jan 26th 2007 11:20AM
The thing is, the magazine can't refuse because there's very few PS3-related ads it could generate.

"bitch, bitch, bitch" is all I'm hearing, honestly.
Don't care for it, neat.
But Nintendo turned the entire market upside down since E3, and they're really proving themselves this generation.
Lets wait until 2007's over before we make accusations.
Ciaran @ Jan 26th 2007 1:55PM
yeah the price for Xbox Live is what like a couple of pence/cents per day... and you can buy it for a month, 3 months or a full year.
I've got no probs whatsoever of paying for Live. I know that quality is likely to suffer big-time if it was free (eg. PS3)

All of you should be praising PSM for doing this. This is the same issue that has the BEST Xbox 360 comparison I have seen outside of Gamespot.com. When they say "independent" on their magazine cover. They mean it. There is no pandering there. Also, even though the staff got flack for it, this is the SAME publisher, Future Inc, that allowed all of their magazines but most significantly PSM magazine to run a 16-page insert promoting the Xbox 360 console with the Xbox 360 console before launch. I own all consoles(except a Wii--yet) and I would recommend any and all Xbox fanboys with a PS2 in their homes to subscribe to PSM magazine because of these two acts.
They deserve your support. After all, the last thing we need is for Sony to figure out a way to get rid of this magazine like they did Official Playstation Magazine. I know it won't happen, but if the OPM subscribers don't move to PSM and the PS3-bashing continues, PSM could lose its great audience. :-(
Scott Krueger @ Jan 26th 2007 4:45PM
I didn't Like Gears of War much at all.
I like Halo, Halo2 and Resistance better.
I didn't like God of War Much either.
