New Square-Enix MMO bound for 360, not PS3? [update 1]

Update: After doing a little digging, we've uncovered the source of this story. Tanaka's comments come from an interview with Pro-G, so it looks like the upcoming 360 MMORPG from Square-Enix is the real deal, folks.Say it with us now: "whaaaaa?" Coming from our friends at Xboxygen (they're like, totally French), is a dandy of a rumor: Square-Enix is currently developing an MMORPG for the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista. Perhaps the most interesting part of the rumor, the game may not make it to the PS3 at all. Hiromichi Tanaka, director and executive producer of Final Fantasy III for the DS, reportedly made this announcement in a recent interview: "We're working on a next generation MMORPG for the Xbox 360 and Vista but a version for the PS3 is possible."
Assuming this is true, we can only guess as to what the MMO will be. Considering that Final Fantasy XI is already available for the 360, it's not too much of a stretch to assume it might get a sequel. Still, the important thing is that Microsoft may be getting more Square-Enix love in the near future. Could a legitimate Final Fantasy be in the works as well? We can dream, can't we?

I was gonna do a write up on this story about an hour ago but my problem is it might be more than a rumor. Xboxygen never provides links to sources for their news stories. So I wonder did they do an interview, or did they read an interview someone else did?

Even taken as an unsubstantiated rumour, its still juicy! Offers the thought of even Square Enix of all people being wary about the PS3's future market share.

I'd rather have a single-player Final Fantasy game for the 360 than a MMO RPG. Final Fantasy XI wasn't a commercial or critical hit and I don't expect the sequel to do better.

OMG PS3 can keep anything from japan.... i mean really... i cant relate to the feminine thin blonde n blue haired homosexual prepubesent rpg characters square makes... and seriously can anyone? my leg would weigh more than any of the final fantasy characters even if they was soakin wet and wearin boots! and im not fat im just some guy... and people have the balls to talk about games like gears of war n say that there characters are lame... have u seen wat comes outta japan on the regular? omg japan can keep there soft games wit there ice cream ass protaganists btw KOTOR best rpg ever.

Jeez, a lot of repressed feelings there. Personally I would love to play this game. I don't need to identify with characters from games. I never did and never will. Whether it's Mark Fenix or Cloud. (Okay Tidus from FFX was pushing it a bit)
This news makes sense since they just recently licensed the UE3. It doesn't take much to make it better than FFXI. Obviously there will be voice chat in some form and making it faster pace would help.

I don't know what's wrong with you.. I like both systems - X360 and PS (2 as we didn't get the PS3 yet over here in Europe). You seem like a "typical" American just wanting to kill and shoot etc. just Ego-Shooters (Columbine...? -> They're planning to ban all Ego-Shooters soon here :( / :) ), Wargames, Ghetto-Style-Stuff and maybe some Car Races or SportsGames (eventually). Nothing else. Why don't you give it a go? There are so many people who love to have a wide variety of genres to chose from..

How is this news a rumor? Seriously who does the research for this site? At Microsoft's E3 2005 keynote they shown a tech demo for "next-gen" hardware (ie Vista/360). Then a year later at the FFXI Fan Festival 2006, the developers of the Aht Urhgan expansion shown pics of that same tech demo from the year before and confirmed then it was a new mmo for Vista/360. Then that following summer SE even put out a press release .pdf specificly stating this new MMO is "not a sequel to Final Fantasy XI".
So how is this after two years later still a "rumor" after so many blatent confirmations? lol
I bet ya guys didn't even know this is actually Dragon Quest Online (currently in alpha) and not a Final Fantasy game that everyone thinks it will be.
