Video: Wii remote working on 360?
While we were busy speculating about Wii style motion controls on the Xbox 360, waruwaru was busy making it happen. As you can see in the above video, waruwaru has rigged up an XNA demo using the Wii remote, a project he has dubbed Waru360. Due to some limitations in the current build of XNA, there is a very noticeable lag in the control output. According to the demo's creator, the program can read input from the remote approximately 5 times per second, which results in the lag apparent in the video. Skeptics that we are, we must point out that the video could be fake, but overall it looks like the real deal. It looks like the 360 is getting motion controls whether Microsoft does it or not. Of course, it won't be the first time that's happened. Waruwaru promises that more is coming, we'll be sure to keep an eye on it.

props to him for making it work!

go to about 32 seconds left in the clip. when he tilts the controller forward, the light at the bottom of the wiimote's not on! there's "hoax" writen all over this thing!

My question is.. how do you get the Xbox 360 to input over Bluetooth?
Michael Paul @ Feb 27th 2007 8:13PM
If the Wii hardware is USB based, it's all feasable. I'm just underwhelmed by the performanceof that event loop...

if you just look at the dot, it looks like the way the wii controls
Killer @ Feb 27th 2007 8:59PM
Ummm ShaleX, I'm pretty sure the Wiimote isn't Bluetooth. So 360 doesn't need to do Bluetooth. Still not buying it, besides why do I want to use the Wiimote on my 360?
Besides, I'm glad the 360 doesn't have bluetooth. It's too buggy in my opinion.
(Ps. any Bluetooth fanboys don't start a war with me becuase it's an opinion. So don't go all "OMG.. HE JUST SAID BLUETOOTH IS NOT GOOD!" and start talking facts, becuase I could careless.)

Killer, the Wiimote IS based on Bluetooth. There are controller drivers for the WiiMote for a PC with Bluetooth.
Adding the ability to use Bluetooth directly to a 360 would not be a task that anyone would want to approach. The Bluetooth stack is HORRIBLE to deal with and writing one for the 360 would be a massive chore.
Writing a program for a PC that can translate the Wiimote commands into something that could be sent to the 360 via USB or over the network...now thats something that would be much easier to do. I could think of several ways to do that.
Killer @ Feb 27th 2007 9:39PM
Thank you, Romp for helping me learn that. Didn't know that the Wiimote was Bluetoothed based. It seems odd that they have a sensor bar for it. Probally for better accuracy, I guess.

The wiimote can detect its orientation and movement. It can't, on its own, tell accurately what you are pointing at onscreen.
So, it can tell the motion of a swing like a bat, but it needs to see the IR leds to tell exactly where you are pointing.
So, if you turn sideways and make the motions needed, it will work in games like bowling or baseball.
Its a pretty neat piece of tech.
Someone needs to figure out how to connect my Wii to my 360 as an accessory. Add a new tab to Live Arcade... Live Wii.

this is a total hoax...on the 360 we have no low level access to the input on the USB ports on the 360...its impossible to accept any input other than official 360 controllers and a USB keyboard with XNA Game Libraries...
sorry, the wii-mote will never work on the 360 until the OS is cracked open for homebrew software written in a lower-level language.
Mike @ Feb 28th 2007 7:27AM
hoax - I was under the impression that you had to launch an app or game once you connected to your pc w/ xna, not just connect.
waruwaru @ Feb 28th 2007 10:49AM
O yee of little faith. :)
- the little blue lights on the wii are programmable, they were just off for this demo
- the demo is very slow because we don't have access to the lower-level hardware. doesn't mean we can't get to it some other way ;)
- the demo was launched through the XNA launcher at the very beginning of demo
- Romp is on the right track to how this is done :)
- since everything is wireless, it's hard to proof this in a video. The doubters will just have to wait for the source code release. :)
