Fable 2 is getting a cute puppy dog

The French folks over at Xboygen posted pictures of a new "character" in Fable 2. It's a dog! Your own personal dog to play with, train, and love while exploring the lush green world that Fable offers. In one picture, Peter Molyneux is pointing to our furry little companion and probably explaining how to get your dog to attack on command ... or so that's what we want to believe. And of course these screen grabs beg the question to whether or not this is the big Fable 2 announcement or just one interesting addition to the game. Only time will tell, but we'll find out soon as our very own Richard Mitchell will be getting the complete dish on Fable 2 during his coverage of GDC: 07. Stay tuned.

If this is the 'big' announcement, then I will be unimpressed. Fable and Nintendogs, together at last.

nice to see a "next-gen" game catching up to what nethack did 20 years ago.

Yeah I thought of Nintendogs too, but this is Fable after all..maybe you can raise a sweet dog to help save people or something..or on the other side, perhaps a trained attack dog (A wolf would be awesome!)

Yeah dog armor!

There was a post about it on Kotaku that was taken down at some point. The dog is more interesting than "hey, it's there". It essentially acts as a replacement for your HUD in some senses, according to the developer.
LunarDuality @ Mar 7th 2007 12:27PM
Now, I'm not sure where I read more info on the dog (Kotaku maybe) but this has already been discussed a bit.
Basically the dog is your pet but it has an advanced AI that interacts/reacts to the environment without you making specific commands (i.e. you take out your gun and the dog knows to attack whatever is closest to protect you). It will also essentially be a HUD replacement (as the word is that Fable 2 has no HUD) in that the dog will help you find where you need to go, etc. Like having a pointer I guess.
It all plugs into Molyneux's idea of "Love" in the game. Love from society, romantic love, familial love (children, etc.), and love and loyalty from your pet.
I'll have to see if I can find that link.

@ Tony
Beat me to it I see. Didn't realize the post had been pulled though. Interesting. Are they gonna have another blackballing incident there?

Sounds like Lassie meets Fable 2.
"What's that Lassie, a hell hole has opened up...and Timmy has fallen in the well? Let's go!"

the interesting part would be making a bad dog that killes any body that stands in your way, even if it's a little kid. The dog having red eyes and growling when ever sombody is close.
P.s. Dog armor 800 M$ points......???

interesting...i love dogs...so i think this is quite an awesome idea...if what tony and lunarduality say is true.
still cant wait for fable 2...although its gonna be a LONG wait.

Hope the dog isn't as lame as the Black & White's 'Creature'.
SuperDave @ Mar 7th 2007 2:04PM
HELL YES, some new Fable 2 news! WE'RE GOING TO GET A DOG!!! AWESO....wait what???
Anyway, if it's anything like was being described in the comments, might be pretty cool.
Ithilis @ Mar 7th 2007 2:28PM
The more I think about this idea, the more I dislike it. Why? Because the concept is being forced upon each player. Fable is about choices, isn't it? Well, what if I don't want a damn dog following me everywhere? I can't get rid of it, of course, because it acts as the games HUD and map navigator.

Maybe Lionhead will make some d/l content that enables u to get a other type of creature...
Like a cat, hawke, owl or a baby panda bear...
That will open up choices. But the idea as of now how they (LH) bring it dousn't sound to me as a great game makanic... But I have to see it in action...
Jack the Ripper @ Mar 7th 2007 6:28PM
I want an in game trailer right the Hell now, or I want Lionhead to STFU and hide their noses in the corner until they've got something substantial to show off. Fable 1 did not age well, and if this is another series of stupid gimmicks designed to shock and awe at first viewing, Fable 2 owners will also be looking back at their purchase with regret.

As long as it’s not constantly shouting “LISTEN!”
