Halo 3 ran (so far away)
Bungie's Weekly Update this past Friday was all about atmosphere and flocks of seagulls. Frankie dished the dirt on how the environments in Halo 3 apply the real world physics behind what makes the sky blue, Rayleigh and Mie Scattering, which in turn gives distant objects that realistically faded tint. Following that, he continues his obsession with the water effects, going into extensive detail of a waterfall and the dynamic changes in the flow of H2O from the start to finish.Next up, he described the use of "flocking" behavior in air battles taking place in the far distance. That being said, when you're in aerial combat, the enemy AI will be in full force. Even so, apparently if you fire a rocket and get lucky, you can even hit some of the distant crafts. Also on the subject of "flocking", the artists have been putting some time into adding birds into the game, primarily seagulls and a form of cockatoo. They currently fly in packs of about 50 or so, and can be individually shot, if you want a closer look at the model. Well, that's enough blabbing on our part, if you want to hear more of what Frankie had to say about Halo 3's progress, click the "Read" link to go to the article.

Wow, that is really cool. Just... wow. The sky tinting thing is probably the smartest thing I've ever seen come out of gaming physics since the gravity gun in HL2. Hope it won't cause too much trouble (and delays); I can't wait for Halo 3.

Yeah- you know, with all of these Bungie updates in blog form each week, it makes me more and more interested in seeing this game...for the water. I'm serious; I want to play the whole thing and snipe dudes, but I'll be pissed if there's no water in the first level! They've played this up for so many months that it's piqued my interest pretty high.
When this 'next gen' of consoles was about to hit, I was hoping that most, if not all of the games would offer real-time, real world physics for everything. I was tired of cardboard capes on characters, form fitting clothing, pre-rendered water, and cartoon elemental damage instead of real-time. I'm very much still hoping this is the case. It's happening slowly, but I hope it does happen ultimately.

They keep pimping this game up like Halo 2, and look how disappointed we all were when that came out! Only it's mulitplayer managed to keep it afloat.
Hopefully they'll start working on a plot soon.

"look how disappointed we all were when that came out!" We were? No complaints here. In fact, near as I can tell it's still one of the most popular games in the world. Must not have been that bad.

Have to admit, I actually enjoyed this weeks update. But, I am still waiting for more information on the Beta.
And did anyone read the article? He mentioned some Easter Egg they were working on but said most of us will probably never see it. I wonder what he means and why most of us wouldnt see it? Surely if it is put into the game and someone finds it, it will be on the internet in know time.
So anyhow, Beta. When damn it?!
