Halo 3 video questions cleared up

Bungie's own Frankie jumped over to the NeoGAF forums to clear up some speculation floating around the new Halo 3 vidoc that was released this morning. In Frankie's post, he re-emphasizes that all the multiplayer gameplay footage was taken from the alpha build and that it is not representative of how pretty the game looks saying that,
"All of the water you saw, for example, is placeholder. No decorators are in those maps. The frame rates are all over the place. Some of that footage has correct lighting, some of it doesn't. All of that footage is olde."
He also goes on to explain that the new bubble shield and trip mine are two of the X button's deployments and are not treated as grenades as some thought. So, the beta will be graphically prettier, the frame rate will much more consistent, and the X button does indeed control the bubble shield and trip mine. Not too shabby.

I never doubted Bungie :).
*hugs*

Thanks...I suppose the 'use' items can either be picked up one at a time and you can't swap? (use the bubble shield first, then you can free a spot to pick up a trip mine?) I'm thinking Mario Kart like items..am I far off, or can you pick up and swap 'use' items on the fly like guns?

is it just me, or does one of the bungie guys look just like Ug from Salute Your Shorts (the old Nickelodeon show)
Darko @ Apr 10th 2007 5:21PM
Anyone else think that the size of the bubble shield is rediculously huge.... i mean where is he hiding that thing... Its bigger than a beach ball
Les Doodis @ Apr 10th 2007 5:24PM
Maybe they'll make use of the d-pad so you can switch between the trip mines and bubble shields, much like you switch weapons in Gears of War.
Or perhaps you'll just be able to carry one at a time.

This is the killer app that sony doesn't have at all. Bungie is going to take care of their baby, they know how important this game is to millions of xbox fans.
This game is going to rock....

As a huge Halo2 multiplayer fan, I have to say I'm really skeptical of the bubble sheild and the trip mines. I can see those things ruining the gameplay.
I certainly hope I'm wrong, but I can see the bubble sheild being an over used defense by people who can't compete with more advanced gamers. I guess the easiest way to put it would be a cheap "noob" weapon.
massive_98 @ Apr 10th 2007 5:54PM
I loved the first halo. But the second one was too much of an online focus.
I hope the third halo has a better single player mode because I'm still not willing to shell out 60$ bucks a year for online.
I love my 360 though.

He said also that the beta will have Alphs build and placeholder graphics. Unfortunately, this statement will go completely overlooked and an ungodly amount of bitching will commence come May 16.

Bungie is so bad at making games..seriously. The bubble shield is bad. Trip mines take no skill. Portable gravity lifts seem cool but i'll wait until i use it in the Beta.

Yes, Pillage, Bungie is pretty bad at selling a multimillionaire dollar franchise...
Eric @ Apr 10th 2007 6:37PM
Wow, Pillage... you managed to completely ignore the fact that Bungie is still responsible for the single biggest day in entertainment history revenue-wise, as well as the fact that they created the most widely-played competitve console game in history.
Bravo.

I would buy the game even if the final build looked like that. The game looks fun.
Digital Limit @ Apr 10th 2007 7:12PM
The bubble shield really interests me. I hope they allow for it to be picked back up, otherwise it'll get minimal use. Then again, all of the equipment seems like map-based utilities, which is to say that the grav pad is for going over the wall, the mine is protect against vehicle raids, and the bubble shield probably has a more specific application I can't fathom. Really, the bubble shield seems like it's merely a free kill or an extra life, however you want to look at it. I just can't think of where I'd want to use it, unless it's transportable in some way.
[KNOCK-on]Wood @ Apr 10th 2007 7:13PM
man, this is gonna suck!?. They'll put in man-cannons, and a week later no one[smart] will use them because it will be too easy for good ppl to snipe you dead.
it won't be fun for anyone who wants to be competetive, because we'll never be using the man-cannon, b/c anyone competitive will be practicing getting that easy kill.
~if its gonna be anywhere near reasonably easy to make that shot in the air, then BUNGIE aughta not even put in the cannons
^The man cannons will be snobbed and completely ignored in ranked games.

Pillage! I would like to ask you a question. What would you consider a good game studio? Also if Halo sucks that bad why would you even play the Beta? You either signed up for it online or bought Crackdown with a first run copy with the beta included. I just don't understand why you would play. our opinion is just as equal I'm just curious about the answers to the above questions?
I myself love the story more than I love the game. That's why I play to become part of the universe I read about in the Halo books.

Pillage is probably 13, theres no use arguing with him.
Anyone who whines about graphics is just a graphics whore who forgot how much fun Halo is.

Actually Frankie said the Vidoc is what features the alpha footage (hence Alpha) and the Beta will be multitudes prettier. He even asked players to take a time out to go look at the water...would he do that for placeholder graphics?
Darko @ Apr 10th 2007 11:47PM
@Geof
From what I've read on Halo 3 so far it seems that they're going to give you a ton more control over gameplay aspects in multiplayer matches... so for the people who dont like the new additions Im sure theres going to be a way to disable them so no wories.
Anonymous @ Apr 11th 2007 2:02AM
The real question is; Can I man cannon AND bubble shield at the same time? How awesome would that be. That would completely turn around the advantage that snipers have against people using the man cannon.
I love it how when Bungie shows something off with "Placeholder" graphics, it looks pretty damn good, but when people like Peter Molyneux show off placeholder graphics (see:Fable 2 Dog Video) it looks like complete ass. I'm looking forward to Fable 2 (unless it's an overhyped POS like most of Molyneux's previous endeavors) but not nearly as much as Halo 3. If Halo 3 can get their graphics up to par with other similar games (not like Gears of War, noone is expecting THAT level of detail, but maybe FEAR?) then they will certainly have another success. And Halo 2's single player wasn't that bad; it was just in the post Halo era, when we don't really want to shoot at Grunts anymore =P
chaos_deception @ Apr 11th 2007 4:13AM
You Guys obviously do not understand the finer details to some of the added gameplay elements.
Ok lets start with the Bubble shield:
This device grants the user a temporary shield my guess 10 seconds or so and I would imagine that you can only carry one at a time to prevent Shield whoring.
The Trip mine:
This device acts as a Mine (well duh Einstein) an anti vehicle mine to be more precise.
This device would be used to blow up Enemy vehicles such as the warthog and mongoose and would be useless against the Ghost as that floats above ground level.
Sure it can be used to blow up an oncoming enemy vehicle as a kamikaze attack. But look at it this way if you only kill one Spartan you don't gain any points for it as you deduct 1 kill and add one kill which is 0.
plus clever drivers who suspect such an attack can bail out before impact therefore giving the miner a suicide -1 lol.
Again I imagine you can only carry one at a time to avoid over use.
Muffin_man @ Apr 11th 2007 10:07AM
To those that don't know who Pillage, he is Bungie.net's resident spammer. We love him in a strange way... I don't think this is the real Pillage because the real Pillage is a lot more hurtful.
lolz @ Apr 11th 2007 6:55PM
What do u mean not gears of war quality graphics i mean i love halo and will buy it none the less but i will be dissapointed if it doesnt show at least similar graphically think about it. A third party exclusive thats been out a year longer has better graphics than a first party devloper game thats brand new not to mention that this is halo 3 THE game for xbox 360. It just doesnt seem right im sure they have the money and ability at bungie to make this game a real graphical beast.

"^The man cannons will be snobbed and completely ignored in ranked games."
your statement is flawed. is that not the perfect oppertunity to use them?
