Back compat update: Panzer Dragoon Orta! [update 1]
Update: As many have pointed out, the list has been official updated with lots of new games including Soul Calibur II, Spider-Man 2, Mechassault 2, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, and much more. Follow this link for the fully updated list.Xbox backwards compatibility updates are few and far between these days. Hell, the last update was in December. In fact, many feared that the coming of Physchonauts meant the end of new updates. Rejoice, true believers, for a new back compat update is upon us! Unfortunately, we don't know how many games have been added. In fact, right now the only way to get the update is to download the update, burn it to a disc, and install in manually (we assume it will be available on Live soon). However, we do have confirmation of at least two new titles, including SEGA's Panzer Dragoon Orta and Phantom Dust. If you've got the itch for these games, get to downloading. In the meantime, keep your eye on the official backwards compatibility page for the updated list. You can be sure we'll post it when it goes live.

This update kicks so much ass...Panzer, Phantom Dust, MechAssault 2, Mercenaries, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, JSRF, SW: Republic Commando...wow this is awesome. They are very close to whittling away my reasons for still owning an original Xbox.
dsr7997 @ Apr 19th 2007 2:59PM
And still no riddick.
M. Dizzy @ Apr 19th 2007 3:01PM
Looks like the list has been updated! Can't believe Breakdown got in before Riddick.
Morgon @ Apr 19th 2007 3:02PM
I am still waiting for Gladius!
Of course, I'm probably the only person that owns it, but it was still a great game to me.
P.S. -- RM, what's a 'Physconaut'? Is that someone who dabbles in the art of brute strength? :P
Tony @ Apr 19th 2007 3:03PM
This adds in a few games I had sitting around, so that's nice. I wouldn't mind playing JSRF again. It's what I bought my original Xbox for.

Finally Republic Commando. But the UK site hasn't been updated. Does this mean the UK will get it in a few days, or are we left out again.

No you are not the only one...That is on my list as well. :)

Where are the Prince of Persia sequels?
AoE @ Apr 19th 2007 3:20PM
Woot! JSRF, PDO, and Breakdown?! THANK YOU MS! I didn't think we'd ever see these games supported, especially not Breakdown. I cannot describe my happiness. :)
M. Dizzy @ Apr 19th 2007 3:22PM
@13 Amen to that I'm dying for some Dahaka chases and speed kills!
Jay900 @ Apr 19th 2007 3:22PM
good update but dammit i want the pop games
J.Goodwin @ Apr 19th 2007 3:43PM
Very glad to have Oorta, JSRF, and Wolfenstein.
Also, having King of Fighters Neowave is very good. I've got a complete set of Neo Geo MVS King of Fighters games, so that brings me right up to date :D

Wouldn't it be faster to create the Xbox as an emulation on the 360 than to individually emulate each game? Just a thought.

Is Breakdown any good? I have an un-opened copy from 4 years ago that I never got around to playing. I completely forgot about Back compat.
Suddenly, about half of my Xbox collection is busting out of the grave. I loved Phantom Crash.
J.Goodwin @ Apr 19th 2007 3:58PM
They are emulating the system.
Each game is certified fully working on the emulator before they put it in the emulator's list. If it isn't in the list, then you get an error.
Unfortunately, the emulation isn't perfect with all of the actual quirks of the Xbox hardware yet. It works fine on games that met most of the original system spec guidelines, but for games that took the programming closer to the "metal" of the console, things are more work. Some of them rely on what might be considered "bugs" in the hardware, others use the hardware in ways that it was not originally designed to work.
As a result, they have to continue to iterate the emulator and see what games are improved or start working with each version.
You didn't seriously think they wrote an emulator for Barbie Horse Adventures, did you?
VOS @ Apr 19th 2007 3:59PM
Damn still no Kingdom Under Fire
J.Goodwin @ Apr 19th 2007 4:00PM
Breakdown has gotten good to very good reviews. OXM in particular seems to have a huge hardon for the game, and they've brought it up in their podcasts more than once.
T Ghost @ Apr 19th 2007 4:05PM
The oddworld: Much's Odysse retro is crap.
The FX disappear, no sound at all but the music on the backgroud and on the options menu it loads the wrong wallpaper...
Alex @ Apr 19th 2007 4:06PM
PHANTOM DUST!!!
I heart BC.
jkdoug @ Apr 19th 2007 4:09PM
WTF? They add BC for a game like Panzer Dragoon Orta, one I've never even heard of, let alone seen for sale in any store, but they don't add my Destroy All Humans 2?
I'm a sad panda.
notsonic @ Apr 19th 2007 4:18PM
destroy all humans is garbage compared to a game like panzer dragoon. ;o
also, kof2002 works like shit. do they playtest these?
and jsrf doesnt work on the combo disc with sega gt.
Triforceowner @ Apr 19th 2007 4:23PM
Thanks, Goodwin, and sorry about the triple post.
Buckling @ Apr 19th 2007 4:27PM
still waiting on Freedom Fighters....
Cabal17 @ Apr 19th 2007 4:30PM
Breakdown hell yeah! I was afraid they wouldn't ever get that one on the list.
@ Triforceowner
I think they are just working on an Xbox emulator, its just they only let you use games that are playable on their current version.
Alex @ Apr 19th 2007 4:36PM
FINALLY!!! Street Fighter Anniversary Collection!!!! I've been waiting
to play my copy again since I ditched my old xbox. I miss 3rd Strike!
The XBLA SF just doesn't cut it. (although i still say Alpha 3 is the
best) anyway .. Woo Hoo!!!
Zilazapper @ Apr 19th 2007 4:40PM
JetSetRadioFuture doesn't work... I just tried it from the JSRF/SegaGT disc and it gives me the unsupported thing :(
VampireHunter Z @ Apr 19th 2007 4:38PM
OMG! I was always against BC but please tell me you are only teasing about Street Fighter AC? If this is true I will hunt down that game and purchase it.
quahog_convo @ Apr 19th 2007 4:48PM
Anyone know if the Sega GT/JSRF combo disc will work?
Saint Cornelius @ Apr 19th 2007 4:57PM
Oh, how I've missed you, Phantom Dust. EVERY 360 OWNER needs to go out and buy this game, MSRP $19.99 and probably less now.
AoE @ Apr 19th 2007 5:10PM
@0ldb0y,
I won't lie to you, Breakdown has some control issues... especially when it comes to the shooting (which makes up much of the early levels) but if you can suffer through the crappy shooting, the rest of the game is AMAZING. I've never felt so drawn into a game as I did with breakdown, and it contains for me one of the most memorable, and my personal favorite boss battle in the 25+ years I've been gaming. The storyline is fantastic, the fighting is extremely intense (the whole game is, it doesn't give you much room to breathe), I actually place it in the top five xbox titles out of the 400 or so I played (not all to completion mind you)
Kwincy @ Apr 19th 2007 5:44PM
To all those wishing for MechAssault 1, don't hold your breath. Why would they make this game B/C? It one of the games that let people hack the original XBOX in the first place. I'm surprised that the original splinter cell made it to the list.
Alex @ Apr 19th 2007 7:39PM
to #33 + any SF Ann fans - it works!, and the update downloads automatically! Looking for some players (not many on live anymore since it's so old) Send me a request! - Gamertag: SupaSlick
Gargoyle @ Apr 19th 2007 9:16PM
Ugh. Mercenaries froze my machine after playing for a half hour. Not a good sign.
BluesmanTLU @ Apr 20th 2007 1:23AM
I didn't have an original Xbox, so after checking out the reviews for a few of these games I picked up a few at Gamestop for a few bucks each. Panzer Dragoon is great, Phantom Dust seems pretty cool as well.
They had a buy-2-get-1-free deal, so I also grabbed Crimson Skies. I didn't know much about any of the three until just recently, but for a total price of about 13 bucks, these are some great games.
jp @ Apr 20th 2007 8:48AM
Anyone in the UK get JSRF to work (the standalone game, NOT the combo disc with Sega GT)???
I saw it had been added to the BC list so tried it in my 360 - it downloaded an update but all I see is a msg saying it's not supported along with this status code:
X: 5805.0 B: 1884.0
Anyone know what this means???
RogueStorm @ Apr 20th 2007 9:06AM
I'm just glad I finally get to play through Republic Commando on my 360. Now I need to find a copy of SFA somewhere.
TroyKatoy @ Jul 7th 2007 5:55PM
So who do we talk to about getting gladius on that updated list?
