Super SFII Turbo HD: what big sprites you have!
It was recently announced by Capcom that they would be releasing a new version of Street Fighter II on Xbox Live arcade. Not only is Capcom bringing Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix to XBLA, but it is also giving the entire game an HD makeover (hence the "HD Remix" in the title). Racket Boy has gone into great detail analyzing a slide that came from the Capcom press conference discussing the game. In the image above you can see several iterations of Street Fighter sprites. On the left is the original Ryu sprite from SFII. Next to that is a sprite from Guilty Gear, the current standard bearer for high resolution 2D fighters. Next to that is a Ryu sprite from Street Fighter III, the highest resolution entry in the series. Now, you've seen what was, so what is Capcom doing for the remake?
The second sprite from the right is an upscaled version of the original sprite from SFII, next to that is the newly redrawn and remastered sprite that will appear in HD Remix. Damn. As Racket Boy points out, the sprite is so large and detailed it hardly looks like a sprite at all. Of course, we won't know how well it really looks until we see it in motion, but this is a great start. Tournament level players are also concerned that any tweaks to the frame rate will ruin the game, but frankly we're so flabbergasted by how pretty it is that it's hard to complain. We can't wait to see what Capcom has in store for us this fall.
Now if the folks at Capcom could just get together with the folks behind Castlevania, we'd be in business.

Stop teasing us

This is such an iconic game in my childhood. The first fighter game I REALLY got into. My only worry is this.
Will the craptacular 360 D-Pad screw this game up for me?
In the SNES version you had to be pretty exact with the moves more exact then I think I can be on this D-Pad.

nice to finally see a game with some REAL next-gen graphics.

Honestly, it kind of looks to be like they took the images Capcom made off of the slide and stuck them on their website with a short write-up lol.

What a ripoff. They shouldn't have released the first Street Fighter II had they been working on this. I've been gypped out of ten bucks.
Capcom & Microsoft, I demand my points back.

No more SF, bring me Time Killers HD. I'll be Rancid.

It's gonna be hard for the artists to keep the continuity within frames with material this detailed! Then again, I'm sure capcom is paying big bucks for this... Wow, I thought the difference in pixel count between the SF2 and SF3 sprites was a lot higher, must've been the WAY smoother animation what did the trick then, really, anybody who played SF3 can testify it moves like a disney film, incredible... SF4 NOW!

looks awesome, now if the 360 only had a usable analog D-Pad. As much as i love the 360 controller, the D-Pad is lackluster at best and makes playing games like this cumbersome.

hmmm...I bought SFII for my 360 months ago...do I get this for free then? Or at the very least half price off?
Mike @ Apr 20th 2007 12:01AM
Wow, that's awesome. Looks more like official artwork than in-game sprites.

What's going to be funny is when they release the pricing on this.. People are all hunky dory and all "This is the sh*t! I'm getting this for sure" until they realize they have to actually pay for it.. then they'll be like "WTF?? 1200pts!?? For SF!? f*ck that, I can't beli_________ etc" Good times that will be...
Johnny @ Apr 20th 2007 3:41AM
I was willing to drop $60 for this.
knowing that its an XBLA game and will be cheaper than than $60 is conferting...
But If 1200pts is the deal I'm still in.
Almadi @ Apr 20th 2007 4:59AM
SNK mentioned that they were doing the same thing with the King of Fighters Series a couple of months back.
I recall that King of Fighters 12 will be completely redrawn for HD and -in the articles words- be the most graphically amazing 2D game ever.
Maybe that is why SF2 is being announced now?

Ooh! Gold star for Colin!

who knows maybe JUST maybe it will be a patch that enables old versions to be HD or maybe a free download for those that got the original
