The Zune will be feeling some Halo 3 love

Microsoft's "iPod killing" Zune music player will be jumping in the sack with Halo 3 in a few weeks. Rumor has it that an exclusive Halo 3 branded Zune will be available later this month online and show up in retail stores come June. But just like the newish pink Zune, it'll only be available in limited quantities. But we're not sure how "limited" the device will really be. Overall, we think the Halo 3 Zune is quite sexy in a subtle fanboy way, but would it make you, fellow fanboy, break down and purchase a Zune over an iPod?

Well, I already bought my first Zune, and am not happy with it. Looking at this, it looks pretty sweet...but it's still a piece of junk...but I want it...
Matthew Mac @ May 13th 2007 1:19PM
You should have a giveaway, my Zune got stolen. ):
LongshotX @ May 13th 2007 1:31PM
Well damn give it to me then Bryan. I don't have a Zune but I want one.
yokken @ May 13th 2007 1:37PM
thats almost sexy enough to make me want to buy one.
HaniPIG @ May 13th 2007 2:06PM
I have had my zune since Xmas... only issue is that it is too sensitive to static. Shift in your chair and it resets on you. The screen and UI i enjoy much more than my ipod, so I would be a repeat buyer. Ipod or zune is just totally whichever floats your boat.
For those already with zune's I would recommend: http://www.360style.net/ for some nice backgrounds. I got Master Chief on now and he looks great with the brown, and that statisfies my halo 3 meets zune for now.
Now what would be a great thing for the Zune is if Halo 3 game playbacks can be saved onto your Zune for viewing at your leisure.
Toph @ May 13th 2007 2:19PM
Cool looking, but it's no iPod.
Mike @ May 13th 2007 2:33PM
You can't polish a turd.
YoRone22 @ May 13th 2007 2:35PM
I think it looks really cool, but there is no way I'm gonna buy a Zune.
3cubedminus3squared @ May 13th 2007 2:52PM
I know of only one person with a Zune. Everyone else I know has an iPod. He used to own an iPod but switched because the whole music sharing thing looked cool to him. The only good thing he's said so far about it is that the screen is bigger.
I'll keep my iPod.
Tyler @ May 13th 2007 3:24PM
If this came in a Zune-2.0 form I'd totally buy it. Instead of buying this, I'll wait a few months for a Zune-2.0.
And I'd never, ever - EVER - buy an iPod. They're horrible.
Peff @ May 13th 2007 3:36PM
ipods blow hard balls with pimples, i would def buy that over an ipod.
Grant @ May 13th 2007 4:41PM
zunes need a major software overhaul.
add some new features, kill the bugs, then we'll talk.
Until then my 8gb nano is more than awesome.
weightless, tiny, long battery life, and loud. sure it's only 8gb, but thats more than enough for whatever my current top 200 songs are, and any other current playlists. what else could you want from a DAP?
Ben @ May 13th 2007 5:02PM
Tyler and Peff. I'm interested to know-
What exactly do you hate so much about iPods?
AnOffday @ May 13th 2007 5:05PM
I've had both and the Zune deff. kicks iPod's ass. People who are complaining about the iPod being so much better than the Zune are just pissed that they already bought iPods. Zune does absolutely everything the iPod does plus more. Enough said.
octo INC @ May 13th 2007 5:45PM
Zune is 100x better than a pos ipod that all these fake ass posers use.
leet people use the zune.
Hey Apples @ May 13th 2007 5:49PM
The Zune has been the victim of a rabid smear campaign by rabid Apple fanboys. It's not the touted 'Ipod killer' but it does well in the market for what it is, which is a solid and reliable MP3 player.
As for this limited edition... it looks like a bunch of leftover black zunes with some halo wording printed on it. I hope people aren't so easily suckered by something with the word "halo" printed on it, but who am I kidding?
Justin U @ May 13th 2007 6:13PM
I'd hit it.
But, I have an iPod, that works for whats its intended to do. Only bought it because, well, its cheaper, and it has my nickname engraved in the back of it.
Carnie @ May 13th 2007 6:33PM
Given the fact that Zune doesn't have the base that iPod does I mean yeah microsoft is putting alot into the zune...but iPod has the market, Itunes is better then Microsoft Media Player and the list goes on....
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER...BUT THE ZUNE SUCKS HAIRY NUT SAC!!!
Tom @ May 13th 2007 6:43PM
"The Zune has been the victim of a rabid smear campaign by rabid Apple fanboys."
Amen brother... i have one... like, i actually have one... and it works fine... i just chose the zune instead of the iPod this time around (because my iPod broke), and the Zune has already lasted twice as long
Reedux @ May 13th 2007 6:58PM
The Zune isn't that interesting now. I thought "Man, this looks sweet. I wanna have my background to whatever I want!"
However, there are already iPod hacks were you can change your background, so this doesn't seem to be worth it.
Plus iTunes is heavenly. I couldn't find Eluvium anywhere else.
John @ May 13th 2007 7:33PM
My ipod plays music and I assume the zune does too. These arguments are retarded.
Peff @ May 13th 2007 8:20PM
Ben-
the reason i hate them is because people buy them just because "everyone has them" or "look how pretty they are" they have like an half an hour battery life, their audio sucks, they pretty much only work with apple crap. and theyre crazy expensive, i got my 20 gb Zen Touch for 180, and a 2 gb nano is like 200. that doesnt make sense at all.
Yuccadude @ May 13th 2007 9:49PM
I was looking through the weekly circulars and considering buying a Zune, cause my current music player is a Walkman(CD player is broken), so a Zune seems like a nice enough media player, and Halo 3 branding? Sweetness.
Randy Bultena @ May 13th 2007 10:31PM
I'm not an Apple fanboy, I just would never buy one until they slim down and fix the thing where the text gets crappy when you select something. Those were probably the two things that made me pick an iPod over a Zune. As for this Zune, I hate themed things like this and the U2 iPod. It just seems like its overdoing it.
David @ May 13th 2007 11:11PM
Peff, if that stuff was true, then the iPod WOULD suck. The only problem is, you are completely dead wrong. While some impressionable losers do buy the iPod just because it's "trendy" or "hip", it can still stand its own ground as an incredible piece of equipment. The battery life of an iPod is 20 hours, not half an hour (hey, you were only off my 19.5 hours). The iPod supports lossless audio, which, if you didn't know, is the highest quality codec out there. The iPod and iTunes work right out of the box with Windows or Mac, and it costs less for the same size than the Zune. Fell free to check my information on the product Web site if you don't believe me. http://www.apple.com/ipod/features.html
Ben @ May 13th 2007 11:39PM
Peff, what are you smoking?
Just a repeat of what David said-
20 hour battery-check
Great audio quality-check
Seamless integration with both PC's and Macs-check
Less expensive-check
Peff, you don't happen to be one of those idiots who buys a Zune just because its a competitor with Apple, do you?
I feel sorry for you.
tobin92 @ May 13th 2007 11:53PM
MS should have it support DivX.....Can you say FTW?
jwoo22 @ May 14th 2007 1:38AM
if i didnt already have an ipod i would buy a zune. too late.
Elliot Stokes @ May 14th 2007 2:54AM
If its as reliable as the 360 then I will be getting 4 of them!
Anonymous @ May 14th 2007 4:16AM
Detractors abound, but the Ipod really is the best MUSIC player on the market. Having said that, it is more expensive than similar (storage capacity) devices. Where the Zune really stands out is in it's large screen that makes it alot more friendly for watching video on (Ipod "Video" is a joke and everyone knows it).
If my Ipod broke tomorrow, and I saw a Halo 3 Zune, I'd give it some consideration. I'm not sure how laughed at I'd be for being one of the 10 zune owners though =/
Oh and the helmet that comes with the 130 dollar legendary pack? Sweet. Thing is fonkin HUGE. Must have it.
ill trooper @ May 14th 2007 4:35AM
"the reason i hate them is because people buy them just because "everyone has them" or "look how pretty they are" - Peff
I really can't support this kind of attitude because it's a problem that is created in your own head. I could get mad at the concept of "an iPod" if "an iPod" were a jester's hat or those stupid colored-plastic 1-piece molded clogs with the holes (Crocs) but 'an iPod' is not a trendy annoying piece of clothing or an avril lavine song that you hear too often - it's a audio player. Nearly everyone likes listening to stuff, so what's to hate? It resides in your pocket and if you don't like the white headphones you can use different ones. An then you turn it on and listen to whatever music YOU like, while the guy in the jester hat and Crocs across from you listens to Avril Lavine. You make your iPod different from everyone else's with what you listen to or watch on it.
It's likely that you just don't like Apple and what you percieve as 'Apple fans.' That makes more sense to me than hating a music player.
And as for the 'iPods are junk that break' argument, it's sorta funny seeing people complain that iPods are prone to breakage while we're on a site dedicated to the console with the worst record of dependability. It just shows that people will hold certain quality standards up to something they don't like but lower or ignore those same standards and tolerate it from a product they do like.
I say go check out what's available, and buy what you like.
The Man @ May 14th 2007 10:21AM
@ill trooper
The last time I checked apples refurb site was packed full of ipods, so they must fail. And I know several people that have had Ipods fail and others with battery issues. I'm buying a zune when they thin down the shell. As for the 360 failure rate, I own two launch consoles no issues. None of the people I know that have 360 have had an issue.
andrew @ May 14th 2007 12:13PM
"Cool looking, but it's no iPod."
Yeah, it probably wont be a piece of shit that breaks on me 7 times, with their support REFUSING to giving me a new one, just sending me back mybroken one every few weeks.
kingofwale @ May 14th 2007 1:11PM
>The last time I checked apples refurb site was packed full of ipods, so they must fail.
I'm sorry, but should people on "xbox360" website accuse OTHER products of 'failing' prematurely?
and frankly, still haven't sold 1 million units. Ipod killer is dead, but let's be honest, Zune kills Ipod easily, just put it on top of an Ipod, the weight of Zune itself should do the job admirably
Lp47 @ May 14th 2007 8:31PM
HEll no! IPod kicks.
