60 FPS: Football will be better on the 360
1UP is reporting that all the heavy hitting football games coming out this year (Madden 08, NCAA Football 08, and All-Pro Football 2K8) will be running best on the Xbox 360. 30 frames smoother to be exact. 1UP says that they've confirmed with developers that the 360 versions of each football game will run at a buttery smooth 60 frames per second while the PS3 version will have to settle for 30 frames per second. What does that mean? Well, it means animations will be smoother, faster and less jarring than the PS3 version. And that's a good thing. We aren't sure why the PS3 versions of the games are stuck at 30 FPS, but we're thinking the dev teams just didn't find it worth the extra cash to optimize it for the platform. But even if that were the case it should still put a feather in Microsoft's ego cap, because it would just further prove that the 360 is easier to develop for.

great, now how about better gameplay for NCAA. What a waste of $ the last 2 yrs. I am a casual gameplayer who just wants good gameplay and solid graphics. I really don't give a rats a55 about the heisman, recruitng, etc. Lets get back to football here.

Games are developed on PCs. Xbox 360 uses DirectX, easily to translate to to. PS3 uses some Linux based system.

B-b-b-but... but... the Cell processor!!!
Coming up on one year out for the PS3, and games STILL run better on 360. I try not to be a jerk about stuff like this... but honestly, after the Sony fanboys constantly bragging about the "supposed vast mountain of untapped potential" in their over-priced console, I find this absolutely hilarious.

"Games are developed on PCs. Xbox 360 uses DirectX, easily to translate to to. PS3 uses some Linux based system."
There's some level of that, but when you get down to it, it's a pretty poor reason. What about when games are developed on Macs?
These things have to be addressed in the SDK and, really, it seems that the tools Sony is providing are not as easy to use. Regardless as to "why" it's still a problem.
Some other sports games, comparatively, have no self-shadowing on PS3 or a poorer looking crowd. Small things, but noticeable when you consider the hype surrounding the system's power.
It seems like the main things that will show off what this thing can do are coming from Sony. I'm not into the genre, but it's hard to argue that Heavenly Sword's latest videos/images aren't gorgeous.
jsn @ Jul 2nd 2007 11:42AM
itsburnsie:
That's all marketing hype with no real world stats to back it up. People want it to be faster because they want to believe that the Cel processor is some revolutionary chip, but it's not. The GPU isn't as good and the CPU is an unknown that if it is faster at all, it could take years to see it. Factor that in with sub-par development tools and you get what we've seen. Games that aren't as good as the competitions versions.
Titty Pink @ Jul 2nd 2007 11:52AM
In the simplest terms, these games have sucked on the 360 anyway; this is one set of games where the PS3 style controller wins out. Everyone who still plays Madden had to force themselves to like it better than the PS version at some point. As far as the specs/framerate part, thats damn sad for the guys who ported this over to the PS. Hopefully someone will learn to program for the thing in the next 5 years, but you cant blame the hardware or the cell. If dudes arent smart enough to hack it, then they just won't be hired on in the future (at least in my world). Heavenly Sword not gorgeous? This is madness; THIS IS SPARTA!!!!

No we're saying that Heavenly Sword DOES look gorgeous :) I wish that game came 2 my xbox! I suspect it's a hardware issue, I could understand a software level hiccup on one game. But not three. But of course this is all just speculation and opinion. I can't back up my comments with anything more than guess work.
FrannckyB @ Jul 2nd 2007 12:38PM
There is also the BIG possibility that this is a case of MONEY changing hands.
I really wouldn't put it pass Microsoft to have paid off these developers so to make sure those games run better on the XBox. It would be just like them to do something like that.
bill @ Jul 2nd 2007 12:48PM
this game could have easly ran 60fps...but...i wouldnt doubt it that the devs are lazy and just ran the 360 version through a porter and as we all know, that doesnt work out very well.
thisguyrighthere @ Jul 2nd 2007 12:51PM
The PS3 has been out for almost a year now? I never would have guessed. I feel like I'm still waiting for all those killer launch titles I was promised. There isnt anything to play and it's glitchy as hell. Cell processor? Anyone remember Blast Processing?
I can say that at least my PS3 hasnt had to be sent back to MS for repairs. But then, I dont have anything to play on it. I actually missed my Xbox when out for fixing. The whole time it was gone I didnt touch my PS3. Sony better anti-up for Xmas or this things hitting ebay.
BrianM @ Jul 2nd 2007 12:53PM
Excellent, i'm well excited :D
Brian @ Jul 2nd 2007 1:14PM
Another issue here is that the PS3 actually is very limited to it's power, and has really bad bottleneck. It only has the 256mb of memory available for certain commands (which is why Gears of War can only run on the 360, not the PS3).
This just shows how limited the PS3 is. You can design all the nice games you want, but at 256mb, there is only so far you can go.
Nick @ Jul 2nd 2007 7:03PM
It would be fabulous if the people reporting on gaming new something about the technology.
The PS3 version will run at 30fps because it will be rendered at 1080p. The 360 version will run at 60fps because it will be rendered at 720p.
1080p at 60fps would be too taxing on the PS3 hardware. And of course the 360 couldn't produce 1080p at 60fps either. So what is happening is the 360 game comes in at 720p60 to trick the eye into thinking the image is smoother, while the PS3 can create the same image quality in 1080p at only 30fps.
I think you guys at xbox360fanboy do some great work in your coverage of things pertaining only to the 360. But it seems you are making yourselves look more and more ridiculous when you try to poke fun at competing systems that you don't fully understand.
Brad @ Jul 2nd 2007 1:27PM
Nick - but what about the 99% of gamers who don't have a 1080p HDTV? They'll be playing at 720p @ 30fps while everyone on the Xbox 360 will be playing at 720p @ 60 fps.
It's good to be a 360 owner.
Alan @ Jul 2nd 2007 1:28PM
OUCH!
I'd be PISSED if I owned a PS3 only. That truly sucks.
Brian @ Jul 2nd 2007 1:32PM
Not to mention, it hasn't been announced whether or not the titles are 1080p or 720p on either system. Both systems as of late have been both getting 1080p titles.
Nick @ Jul 2nd 2007 1:37PM
@14, you are a moron. The PS3 uses dynamic modules. In addition it can run in a 256+256 environment because it moves data in and out of memory 8 times faster than the 360's cores.
To bring things to earth for you, why don't you simply explain to us all how the PS3 will be running Unreal Tourney III, which is what GOW is built on, and is essentially GOW with different modeling, textures, and controls, but couldn't run GOW itself?

Jim Kirk @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:06PM

When you say "those PS3 developers who can't do the job shouldn't be hired" "at least in your world," as you put it, does that mean you are referring to the imaginary world of 4D gaming where the PS3 has 2 HDMI outputs and can do gaming at 120fps????? Ya know, all of those lies that Krazy Ken Kutaragi from Sony said when he was telling lies about the Playstation 3 and showing false graphic images.
In the real world, the Playstation 3 is a performance disappointment. And "Screenshots" of certain PS3 games may look nice when they aren't moving, but when you see those games in motion, you will quickly see that they have framerate problems!
Playstation 3 has a very disappointing reputation with framerate problems. Just look at the way the PS3 version of Call of Duty 3 is so choppy with a poor framerate, but the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 3 has a very smooth framerate at 60 frames per second.
And look at the way games like F.E.A.R. run at 30 frames per second on the Xbox 360, but the PS3 version often goes lower than 20 frames per second and becomes very disappointingly choppy, almost as if you are playing in slow-motion. It really is that bad! Just read the review from 1up to see for yourself: http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3158930
And look at the way the new Rainbow Six: Vegas on the PS3 was released 7 months later, and it has so much less detail in the textures. The faces of the characters in the PS3 version are not nearly as detailed as the Xbox 360 version of Rainbow Six: Vegas. Just look at how IGN's detailed review points out that the PS3 version doesn't compare to the Xbox 360 version in terms of visuals: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/799/799830p2.html
The main reason why the football games run twice as smoothly on the Xbox 360 is actually because the Xbox 360 has so much more Polygon Power, RAM, and General Purpose CPU power that is easy for developers to use in any way they want.
Xbox 360 can display 500,000,000 polygons per second, compared to only 275,000,000 polygons per second on the PS3.
I read that this years Football games are a PERFECT example that show how the Xbox 360 displays TWICE as many polygons as the Playstation 3, because that is EXACTLY what is happening when the Xbox 360 version runs at TWICE the framerate!
William Winchester @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:36PM
Let's just get one thing straight:
The Xbox 360 version of ALL THREE of those football games will be seen in 1080p if you have a 1080p HDTV set, because the Xbox 360 upconverts ALL signals to 1080p!
Whether or not those three football games has a Native Resolution of 1080p is unknown at this point in time. It is unknown for both Xbox 360 and PS3.
One thing we know for sure is that the difference between a Native Resolution 720p that is upconverted to 1080p is virtually unnoticeable when compared to a 1080p Native Resolution.
Another thing we know for sure is that the difference between 30 frames per second and 60 frames per second is VERY noticeable because of the extra smoothness!
Xbox 360 has a truly huge advantage in the area of Football videogames!
The performance gap is getting so much bigger in favor of the Xbox 360!

Brian @ Jul 2nd 2007 7:11PM
The PS3 cannot share 512mb at once in the same environment as the 360 does. THAT IS FALSE Nick.
The 360 can process it's memory up to 10 times faster than the PS3.
Unreal III = Unreal Engine, which can run on the Wii. Unreal III was scaled down from GOW in textures in order for the PS3 to handle the textures, and have an equal appearance on both consoles.
Randy @ Jul 6th 2007 8:02AM
A lot of you are wrong!
PS3 isnt linux based! wtf! it runs a sony in house os.
Games arent ported from the pc and then 360, its still hard even with direct x, pc's are x86 or x86_64bit. The 360 has 3 power pc cores, way different!!
The reason why the ps3 version is only 30 fps has to do with time and money, time burns money and they arent gonna wast money on a game for a system with not that big of an install base, and doesnt have easy programming tools or good libraries for that matter.
Also what about the cell?? the ps3 has only 6 usable spe's, and all they are is DSP (Digital Signal Processors). You can program them as small dsp processors to do things, but that doesnt mean its really that powerful, the potential power is great yea! but you are limited to only programming 256kb for each one. So little graphic things and gimicky code for the games can happen but more so you can program alot of the same stuff all software with multiple cores, just thread out the program. honestly for a few extra cents, microsoft could of bought dsp's off the shelves and hacked their way around them in the SDK's to make them usable for graphics, but the video chips come with dsps in the microchip these days, so it doesnt really make that much sense, the cell was a awful idea, good for tv manufactures but not good for games really, now if they put two of the new smaller form cells in the ps3 and it had 2 cores plus 12 spe's then it would be what the hype made it to be, seriously its not really that amazing.
William Winchester @ Jul 2nd 2007 11:54PM
Nick,
You are 100% wrong about the Football games this year.
It has NEVER been reported that the PS3 versions will have a Native Resolution of 1080p. It would be nice if it did, because that would mean people who have a 1080i HDTV set would see the game in 1080i instead of 480p. The PS3's inability to upconvert resolution is a MAJOR flaw!
The Xbox 360 version DEFINITELY will output a resolution of 1080p, because ALL Xbox 360 games are upconverted to resolutions as high as 1080p. That is one of the benefits of the Resolution Upconversion hardware ability that the Xbox 360 features.
The Playstation 3 does NOT possess that ability to upconvert resolution like the Xbox 360 does. That is the reason why games made in 720p resolution for the PS3 end up being seen in only a downconverted 480p resolution when you try to play them on a 1080i HDTV set.
There is absolutely no doubt about it, the Xbox 360 versions of this years Football games are FAR SUPERIOR to this years Playstation 3 games!
That isn't a big surprise, though, because the Xbox 360 software always offers greater performance than Playstation 3 versions. Just look at the reviews of the magazines and websites.
Turian_Tim @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:10AM
The Xbox 360 has RAM that is much more advanced than the RAM found in the Playstation 3. That is one of the main reasons why the Xbox 360 can have a smoother framerate like that.
Initially, Sony may try to say that both systems have 512MB of RAM, but that isn't accurate.
PS3 has 512MB of Non-Unified RAM. Xbox 360 has 512MB of Unified RAM, plus 10MB of highly advanced eDRAM that is incredibibly efficient!
PS3 has 256MB of RAM dedicated to the CPU, and 256MB of Video RAM. The CPU can NEVER access any more than 256MB of RAM at ANY time!!!!! That is a MAJOR hardware bottleneck restriction!!!!
Xbox 360 has 512MB of Unified RAM that can be used in ANY way the developers want! If there are times when the CPU needs more than 256MB of RAM, the developers could use it. And that OFTEN happens!
There is almost NEVER a time when all 512MB of RAM is being used in the PS3, because that would be like perfectly balancing 256MB of RAM on two sides. There is ALWAYS wasted Non-Unified RAM in the PS3 that COULD HAVE BEEN used if it would have been Unified RAM.
With the Xbox 360, ALL 512MB of RAM is being used at ALL TIME, because the developers can use it in any way they need to! There are parts of games that may require much more advanced Artificial Intelligence rather than intense graphics. That is when Video RAM would be wasted on the PS3; but on the Xbox 360 that RAM can be used to help the CPU. With the Xbox 360 the Unified RAM makes life very easy for developers!
The eDRAM of the Xbox 360 is very advanced. That is something the PS3 doesn't have an answer for. It is a backup for the CPU that really does help the framerate issues a lot.
The RAM advantage goes even further for Xbox 360.
The Xbox 360 Operating System only uses 32MB of RAM; it is INCREDIBLY efficient! That leaves 480MB of RAM that can be used for gaming.
But the PS3 Operating System is designed very poorly in a way that is not efficient. It wastes 96MB of RAM! That means only 416MB of RAM are used for gaming! This gives the Xbox 360 an advantage of 64MB of RAM when it comes to gaming purposes.
There is NO DOUBT about it. The Xbox 360 has RAM that is MUCH MORE ADVANCED than the Playstation 3.
Like people are saying, just look at the PERFORMANCE of the actual games to see it with your own eyes!
bill @ Jul 3rd 2007 3:04AM
@#20
even though that devs already said that they wont even use all of the 275,000,000 polys so explain how they are going to use 500,000,000 .
SlyTheBoss @ Jul 3rd 2007 7:48AM
#28, "The Xbox 360 has RAM that is much more advanced than the RAM found in the Playstation 3".
Sorry but that's wrong. Beside the 10 MB eDRAM the GPU has, the PS3 also have DDR3 RAM, just like the 360. Altough it only has 256 MB of it, compared to 512 MB for the 360. *BUT*, the PS3 also has 256 MB of XDR RAM which runs at a full 3.2 GHz clock speed, compared to the DDR3 RAM that runs at 700 MHz (in both the PS3 and 360).
This is partly why, although its SPE are barely used (specially in ports), that the PS3 can almost match the 360's power. Less capable CPU (when its SPE are not being effectively used may I stress) but faster RAM (for code, not GPU rendering) means less wasted cycles by the CPU.
If the developers can harness the power of the SPEs in the Cell, the PS3 will be an incredible machine but we are still waiting for that to happen.
Brian @ Jul 3rd 2007 8:59AM
The PS3 will NEVER be able to match the power of the Xbox 360 power because of the 360's more powerful GPU, and it's unified 512 mb of RAM (vs. the 256mb on the PS3).
The SPE's in the PS3 are all being used by almost every game, as is every core on the 360. However, all developers have yet to maximize the efficiency of their coding to properly use them.
Just because the PS3 doesn't have the power or the graphics like the 360 doesn't mean it's not a good system. It will still sell, and sell really well with it's exclusives. However, the 360 is obviously going to win this round. The PS3 sales continue to sink to all time lows, and the 360 sales are selling in record numbers compared to a year ago.
df_toro @ Jul 10th 2007 11:23AM
I'm going to have to go with Xbox360 sorry, go play your shitty games lol!
