PS3 IS TEH FAIL.
Beaudry @ Jul 11th 2007 4:03PM
I'll give you another number: $399. Sony $100 price cut is going to seriously move some units. If MS doesn't respond to that, they will start losing their lead.
TORO @ Jul 11th 2007 4:07PM
"Atleast my POS3 doesn't break!"
Please someone post this, that's where you guys are winning :( Whatever, maybe your POS3 would break if you actually played on them.
GregA @ Jul 11th 2007 4:13PM
DjChad,
That is because outside of the blogosphere the failure rate is not as bad as the blogosphere makes it sound. The three year warranty was a PR move to crush the nefarious desires of the MS haters.
It is my personal experience that marathon sessions of certain games cause the RROD, and if you stay away from those games, or marathon play, your xbox 360 will last indefinitely.
And one more thing. These statistic, as well as the guy who hozed his xbox 11 times and kepy coming back for more, that the Xbox 360 is the undisputed winner of this generation of consoles.
I am sorry you dont have the money, or too much pride or whatever your issue is that prevents you from owning the eleet console of this generation. However, these are the sorts of statistics that smear poo all over the faces of the haters. You are just gonna have to try and lick that poo off your lips try your FUD tactics again in the next generation of console.
Or just go buy a 360 and start enjoying the best most compelling gaming system available today.
Tony @ Jul 11th 2007 4:19PM
"I'll give you another number: $399. Sony $100 price cut is going to seriously move some units. If MS doesn't respond to that, they will start losing their lead."
Yeah, and here's another number $499. They had a $499 model before and it was discontinued.
Sony did say during their conference that at the top 5 retailers their sales have doubled in the past week... but there's no real indication on what the average weekly sales are anyway.
Really, I think MS is smart to do nothing about it now. It remains to be seen what the long term effects of Sony's price cut will be. Once they can figure that out, then they should make the decision. Doing it around the holiday season will create a larger false sense of value than it would if they did it in the Summer.

HAHAHAHAHA!
GregA @ Jul 11th 2007 4:28PM
#12,
So even if the PS3 numbers have doubled it is still less than the XBox 360 from the sales history and after the discounting effect ends it will be back to the same old crappy sales. Also from the trends, it looks like the 360 will surpass the ps2 in sales in the next few months. But hey, third place isn't that bad.
Kinda sucks to be a ps3 fanboy though, because even drastic price decreases can't get a response from MS.
Mike @ Jul 11th 2007 4:31PM
I have stats for you guys too:
1. Your console sales are ahead because you've been a whole year ahead of the competition.(Also, a replacement 360 shouldnt count as sale, I DO work in retail...33% failare rate remember!)
2. PSN's total amount of online users is about half of Xbox Live in barely 7 months.
3. The Engine that was used to make your bread-winner (Gears Of War) is now signed to exclusively to Sony...Which means there maybe a sequel to GoW BUT it WONT be on 360!
4. MGS4 is STILL exclusive to PS3 and there will be NO MGS after that.
5. KillZone will look better than HALO 2.5 when released...
Good Bye 360fanboys...looks like you were knocked by SONY...(Down goes Fraizer, Down goes Fraizer)
PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THA1icarus @ Jul 11th 2007 4:38PM
@15 you 3the point is a load of bull shit.
yes UT3 is comming exclusevly to the ps3 and Epic will optimize the Unreal engine for ps3 but thats it.
GregA @ Jul 11th 2007 4:41PM
15,
Funny that, every PS3 owner I know spends all their time playing with their wii.
Also, they guy went back for more ELEVEN TIMES! I don't care how you try and spin it (and fail) If microsoft has em returning the console ELEVEN TIMES, that is damn compelling games.
DjChad @ Jul 11th 2007 4:43PM
@11
Wow what a response... Acting like you know me and my situation... Anyway, for your information I have purchased 2 360s in the last year both of which died and they were not from marathon gaming sessions which is not a cause of the RRoD. Its common knowledge now that heat combined with poor hardware design is the direct cause and before you make more ignorant assumptions I keep my 360 in a well ventilated cabinet with plenty of room for air to flow all around it.
You're post is just another example of the ignorance that plagues diehard fanboys. Where does it say in the console's manual that I cant play games for more than a couple hours at a time or my system will blow up? Nevermind the fact that Microsoft has admitted theres a problem.
I love my 360 (when its working) but I want to know when I cant expect this bs to stop. 3 year warranty means nothing to me if I have to keep sending in my console every few months for repairs. I want the hardware issues addressed and resolved.
Instead Microsoft has disappointed me and chose to focus on software at E3 rather than hardware. The games all look great, I know, but who really cares if you cant play them because your console is on vacation in Texas...
burgerwinkle @ Jul 11th 2007 4:43PM
Must all Sony fanboys come and try to make a case of their shit show of a console?
THA1icarus @ Jul 11th 2007 4:47PM
@15 BTW killzone will never sell as much as Helo 3 no matter how good it looks.
And the online of the PS3 even with home(secondLife) still is not as good as XBL.
Dustin @ Jul 11th 2007 4:53PM
Where is my PS3 with LIVE and Wiimotes?
James @ Jul 11th 2007 4:50PM
OK, maybe my math skills are a bit rusty:
18 million games sold
7 million live members
attach rate of 5.9
18 million games / 5.9 attach rate = 3.05 million consoles. There are twice as many Live members as there are consoles on the market?
Wait a minute, they also state that 11.6 million consoles were sold worldwide... so either:
* They sold 11.6 million consoles * 5.9 attach rate = 68.44 million games (doubtful)
* They sold 18 million games / 11.6 million consoles = 1.55 attach rate (doesn't seem right...)
* They sold 11.6 million consoles, but only 3.05 million of them are in use today.
Hrm, that would give a failure rate of (11.6 - 3.05) / 11.6 = 73%. Wow, I guess they really are going to take a bath on the warranty extension they offered...
Seriously, can anybody add these numbers up for me?
Bishop @ Jul 11th 2007 4:54PM
It's an average attach rate...so not all owners have 5.9 games. Math is stupid by the way.
BowserUSC @ Jul 11th 2007 4:58PM
The $399 price point will just force sony to have to sell way more software in order to make up for how much money they loose with console sales.
Milly @ Jul 11th 2007 5:06PM
Here's a stat for you:
Halo 3 pre-orders > PS3 units sold
James @ Jul 11th 2007 5:07PM
Bishop, that's the way an average works. If 10 people have an average of 3 apples each, you can assume that between them there's about 30 apples. You don't need to know how many each person has to estimate the total.
Likewise, if there's an average of 5.9 games per person, and 11 million people that own a 360, there should be about 68 million games sold, but that's quite different from the game-sales number they quoted. There is an obvious, massive disconnect.
thebigfatj @ Jul 11th 2007 5:23PM
FYI, they're cherry picking regions and stats. It's egregious. They're looking at the US-only NPD stats when they're favorable (since they're getting their asses kicked *everywhere else* and the US contains 65% of their total sales to consumers), and they're quoting "sold to retailers" and passing it off as "sold to consumers" numbers. Microsoft failed to meet the lowest bound of their (downward revised) goal of shipping 12 million by June, and has just recently reached about 10.1 million units sold to consumers world wide.
They're running a record year for Xbox debts, sales are slowing in every region, and their first party support is very weak. This quarter, slightly more Wii games were purchased than 360 games, and the 360 has been out 3x as long.
The reality isn't as attractive as Microsoft wants you to think it is, that's for sure.
Bishop @ Jul 11th 2007 5:23PM
Long day at work, and didn't think before I stated that. Math is still stupid though.
CongoZombie @ Jul 11th 2007 5:24PM

I know your smoking crack whe I read that line.
I know its been real hard justifying the ps3..
but no need to be smoking crack son.
take cares.. timed exclusive game.
sony doesn't own EPIC or the engine.. they are borrowing it for a few months because Halo is going to steelz all their sales if they bring it on 360 only.. just relax.. try to cough up the crack smoke from your lungs..
Drew @ Jul 11th 2007 5:37PM
its 18 games sold since the other consoles launched...
Drew @ Jul 11th 2007 5:47PM
18 million i meant
SeriousStan @ Jul 11th 2007 6:24PM
7 million people joined live... Big deal! All this says is 7 million people have created a profile with their 360. I'd rather be told how many people were stupid enough to pay for Gold.
Don't be like Mike @ Jul 12th 2007 4:37PM
@15 and ROFL @ Mike
1. Even though the 360 was launched one year ahead of the PS3, the PS3 is currently not outselling any other console other than a GameCube.
2. There's hardly anything to do on the Playstation Network when I go on, I end up logging off and playing 360 or Wii.
3. Toyota sold their old hybrid engine designs to other car manufacturers after they were years ahead. Did that mean they weren't allowed to build hybrids? NO. They built new and better engines, just like how you can build new and better graphic engines for future Gears of War games. Moron.
4. Even Kazumi Kitaue himself says "Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps".
If Sony's own developers are considering Sony a sinking ship...no wonder there's not going to be a MGS after the 4th one.
5. If I read that correctly, you're talking about KillZone 2. If so, I want to ask...did you get dropped on your head as a baby or something? Why are you even TRYING to compare Halo 2.5 to KillZone 2?
Halo 2.5 was released in Late-March 2005, and KillZone 2 is dated for a February 2008 release. That's almost 3 years difference. Do you know how much improvement you can have in 3 YEARS?
You might as well say how much Gran Turismo 2 sucks compared to Gran Turismo 4. Noob.
Fezmid @ Jul 11th 2007 7:25PM
"* They sold 11.6 million consoles * 5.9 attach rate = 68.44 million games (doubtful)"
Maybe they're counting XBL Arcade games?
qwerter @ Jul 11th 2007 7:50PM
the only reason why they sold that many is becus all of their 360's kept breakin, wouldnt be so proud of that M$ also you guys had a year head start against ps3 and wii...so dont be braggin if its not a fair contest
Sammy D Kat @ Jul 11th 2007 8:03PM
I love my XBOX. I love Halo. I love Gears. The Wii proves that playability is more important than graphics. The only person I know who owns a PS3 only plays his Wii. Everyone else has an XBOX. I’ve played MGS games & the stories just annoy me so couldn’t care less about a PS3 exclusive. I might buy a PS3 if it drops $200, but since most of the games I prefer are either XBOX exclusives or on both consoles, it’s not particularly compelling. I’d rather get a Wii first.
Zrolimit @ Jul 11th 2007 8:04PM
@15 Hmmm...we'll work this in reverse order since all of you PS3 Fanboys are backwards as hell....
5. Well....I'm glad you've seen screenshots of KZ2. Send the rest of us a link to the real game pictures not the supposedly "real in-game" pictures from that dumb cinematic played at E3 '05. I guess then I'll make a judgement.
4. I won't argue this one too much....because I don't care and neither does anyone else that owns a 360. But hey,....it's been rumored...http://xbox.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/konami-isnt-impressed-by-ps3-price-cut/
3. Tell me where it was stated that Epic signed over the Unreal Engine to Sony exclusively? Link? Delusions of Grandeur?
2. Hmmm....Link? Or did you mean over the lifespan of the PS2 and PS3 combined? (And yes I used past-tense for the PS3 as well)
1. Well we now know why you work in retail....Great Stats!!! /sarcasm
Zrolimit @ Jul 11th 2007 8:08PM
@36 Well it didn't seem to bother Sony using that when they had the year head start with PS2 against the XBOX did it? "We sold more PS2s with our year head start than MS did their XBOXes. We so ROXORs!!!"
Kalroy @ Jul 11th 2007 10:59PM
The attach rate is the number of games, peripherals and accessories sold for a game console. For this generation they may be including XBox Live full version games sold, but we don't know that. The reason Mike's math isn't working out is because of this.

Who fucking cares.
If you're a fanboy of a certain company, thats awesome for you. But don't bring it where you're obviously not wanted.
Im tired of fanboyism anyways. I love all three of my next-gen systems equally.

@41,
We're not into that menage-a-trois crap around here. And I suppose one would be forced to love all three systems equally after spending that much money. But tell the truth now. That PS3 isn't half as useful as that groovy $24.99 quesadilla maker on sale at Target.

VampireHunter Z @ Jul 12th 2007 2:31PM
@21
Yes your math skills are rusty. It's 18 million games sold SINCE the launch of their competitors.
The correct number for total games sold is 5.9 x 11.6 million = 68.4 million.
Kompressor @ Jul 12th 2007 3:52PM
month after month the 360 is doing better and better, and month after month sony fanboys come up with new excuses... do you honestly believe a $100 pricecut to $500 is going to allow sony to sell 8 million consoles maraculously changing developers to move away from the 360 and back to the ps3? Shit doesn't work that way, this generation is already set, with the amount of current 360 owners a extremely little amount will shell out $500 for another console that does the same thing, developers aren't stupid... we are now at the point where I can comfortably say that the ps3 will be last this generation with the wii and 360 still in debate, I personally could give a shit less about the wii because for me I don't see it as a next generation console (advanced online play, high definition, media center capabilities), but rather a standard gaming console we have seen for years with an added element of motion which can be fun
