New GoW PC content not coming to the 360
The Advanced Media Network sat down with Epic's Mark Rein and Cliffy B to chat about their big E3 announcements and learned some sad news about the new Gears of War PC content. When questioned about whether or not the new campaign missions or multiplayer maps announced for the PC version would be headed to the Xbox 360, Rein said it was "unlikely [that] we will bring that content to 360". Cliffy B further emphasized their doubt by stating that "if we didn't have any sort of exclusive on the PC, why would people buy the PC version?". The Epic crew explained that bringing the PC content over to the 360 would be an extremely time consuming task and that they're currently focused on other projects like Unreal Tournament 3.Being the Gears fan that I am it's hard to hear that new, exciting multiplayer AND campaign content will be available, but not for 360 owners. And no, there's no way I'm personally buying a beefy computer to run Gears of War PC just to experience the new content. No matter how you slice the news it sucks for 360 owners and Gears enthusiasts ... it's simple as that. Now, I'm going to go cry myself to sleep.
[Thanks, Jason S]

That is bad news :(
The only good thing about the Gears PC version is that it works on XP. I don't have to worry about funding Vista Home Premium so that my wife can keep her media center fix going. It is an additional 1000 points though Dustin..... You know you want them.... ;)
Tony @ Jul 13th 2007 12:45PM
Exclusive content is one thing, but they're adding more to every thing. I mean, 5 new chapters could almost double the game if they were large enough. The original has, what, 6?
From what I remember they also told us there was no PC version being worked on a few times, so maybe this will change as time goes on.
Grindstone @ Jul 13th 2007 12:48PM
When is it coming out? I mean, if it isn't coming out in the near future, it'll be old news anyway considering all the goodness that is coming to the 360. In others words, I'm not going to care about it.
FiddilyDee @ Jul 13th 2007 5:32PM
Maybe if Cliffy was thinking or not towing the company line he would have been able to answer this simple question: People who have pc instead of a 360.
Damn that's complicated
mike @ Jul 13th 2007 12:53PM
the originaly had 5 acts, consisting of 4-6 chapters each. GOW pc gets 5 CHAPTERS exclusive. This is like getting 1 act. So the 360 gets 5 acts and the pc gets 6 acts, not THAT much extra content. And as for multiplayer maps that are new, GOW on 360 seriously has enough now. Besides, the pc version comes with a map editor so people are going to make their own, outnumber the 360 maps 1000000000:1. I couldent care less because I expereined GOW a year ago. in september, i will be playing halo 3, not some new GOW content. Then I will look forward to GOW 2 in the future. Now if GOW2 is pc exclusive or something, then i will be pissed.

Dear Epic:
From the 360 community that bought millions of copies of your game and made it the success that it is, THANK YOU.

that`s a real slap in the face for the 360 owners..as much as i luv gow , i may have to consider how loyal i feel to epic when gow 2 rears it`s ugly head
Tony @ Jul 13th 2007 1:09PM
Well, the odd thing to me is mostly what's the difference? If PC owners didn't buy it on 360, the point of the PC version to them is that they can finally buy it. What does the exclusive content matter in that situation?
It's almost just like "Maybe 360 fans who loved it will buy the PC version too!".
jimmythehandx @ Jul 13th 2007 1:09PM
I played GOW all the time loved the game but not so much any more. The Game is getting old and if there is no new stuuf comming out well I guess it is time to move on.
Eric @ Jul 13th 2007 1:10PM
I am sure they will have the extra content soon after GoW PC releases... Money talks... Not Cliffy.
dunnypop @ Jul 13th 2007 1:10PM
Wasn't Gears of War one of the highest selling games for any console?
Dear Epic,
Thank you for adding more content to the PC market and spending your time with Unreal (which will come to the 360 after the ps3 version).
Titty Pink @ Jul 13th 2007 1:12PM
Now wait wait wait. Mike how can you say that this isn't big time bad news when this is the title that xbots hang their hats on as the game that all games should be compared to? As short as Gears is, it definitely needs more campaign content...and its not a big deal? At least the other guys are pissed off about it. At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if they released a PS3 version WITH the new content. If thats not a big deal then how bout this http://www.fastsilicon.com/latest-news/microsoft-admits-all-xbox360s-are-defective.html?Itemid=60 I found it on Digg.com I'm certainly pissed. I see that PS3 gap closing by the second...

I'm sure you could turn off the pretty graphics and run it on a regular PC. I mean, if you can run Direct X 9 than you could run this, only a little less pretty.
GuiltyDragon @ Jul 13th 2007 1:15PM
It's a few fucking maps. The XBOX version will have it's own exclusive content I'm sure.
I have to respect Cliffy B for not bullshitting about their reasons though.

Crying yourself to sleep at noon, Dustin? You must've been up all night playing your beloved Gears, LOL.
Joop @ Jul 13th 2007 1:18PM
I can sort of understand the situation they are in.
If they announced that it would be coming to the 360, that would probably put off a lot of sales for the PC version, which would be selling at full retail price, while the DLC would have to be a lot cheaper. They may have a lot more potential customers with the 360, but that could also mean lower potential profit depending on the pricing.
Considering that they moved the whole game over to PC just fine, I doubt it would be at all difficult to move the bonus content over to the 360. It's not like they used a different set of tools to make it. It'll probably come to the 360, after it's had a chance to push the PC version a little, which is a dying market anyway.
Triforceowner @ Jul 13th 2007 1:21PM
And why are people pissed at Epic? There is NO reason at all. You were the first people to receive a game that really showcased the Unreal Engine 3 as 360 owners. You will probably see more Gears 1 content down the line on marketplace. You will probably see Gears 2 and 3 before the end of this generation. You will get to play Unreal 3 after Halo 3 has worn you out of its kind of FPS action. There is no reason to be upset at epic. if anything they should be praised for bringing such quality content in such quantity to the 360. And guys, don't let trolls like Titty Pink get you down. His lies aren't even worth reading [Gears of War (main series) can not touch the PS3]. Thanks for the article, even though it had nothing to do with Gears of War.
JohnMatZ @ Jul 13th 2007 1:30PM
I just don't understand all the whining. As great as epic is at supporting their games, they are a for profit company and Microsoft is in the business of making money as well.
At the local Wal-Marts there is alot of shelf space devoted to PC gaming. It is still a valid platform and I do think that it generates quite a lot of money for the publishers.
Yes, we are fanboys but gimme a break, THERE has to be a carrot for us to bite or there is NO REASON for the games to be made.
I will be on my buy list.
Triforceowner @ Jul 13th 2007 1:25PM

Triforce I don't beleive the PS3 will ever see Gears...but I never would have thought in a million years that there would be Gears content that hit another platform that didn't hit the 360. Dude, it's GEARS OF WAR!!!! This game MADE the 360, and this title put Epic up there with the big boys and you're not the least a bit pissed about it? As far as "his lies", I can't make this shit up dude, and as a 360 owner I'm pissed at E3, I'm pissed that Halo 3 looks slightly better than Halo 2 (and doesn't play as well IMO), I'm pissed that I can't get that Gears content, and I'm pissed that my 3rd (yes THIRD) 360 could crash at any fucking moment. Troll or not, those are legitimate gripes. If you are mellow enough for those things not to bother you then cool, but don't talk shit on me because I'm voicing my opinion on 360 issues on a 360 forum. Thats just...odd...
Royale @ Jul 13th 2007 1:52PM
Remember how forever they said that Gears would not be released on the PC. That was so people would buy and XBOX360 and Gears. Now they are just saying this so people will buy the PC version.
"if we didn't have any sort of exclusive on the PC, why would people buy the PC version?"
The logic is not there. I don't think anyone who owns the 360 Gears will spend 50 dollars to experience a few new maps, it's just not worth it. But if they released the new maps via XBLM for 10 bucks like the hidden fronts map pack they will make a killing.
JohnMatZ @ Jul 13th 2007 2:03PM
More Facts.
WOW has 7 million subscribers as of Sept 2006
1.1 billion in subscriptions sales a year alone. (a conservative number) They probably shelled out a quarter of a billion to buy the game and expansions (conservative again)
That is a huge market of PC users and that isn't even the entire slice of the PC gaming pie.
Gears for the PC is a viable property. Why wouldn't Microsoft want to put this game on a platform with a larger installed base than the Xbox 360.
Also alot of us 360 users have decent PCs. Gripe all you want, it makes good business sense. Why else would Microsoft pay for Exclusive content. It keeps expanding the gaming pie. And of all the companies I know MSFT is about PROFIT as much as any of them.
erivera3 @ Jul 13th 2007 2:01PM
@25
Don't worry, Halo 3 will calm your nerves you crazy kid.
Jason S @ Jul 13th 2007 2:14PM
youre welcome guys.
anyway, the fact is with the map editor and ability to get mods is enough for pc users to buy it. at the end of the day 360 players will only get the maps that the devs make, the pc players will get hundreds from the fans.
combine this with an exclusive game mode and extra multiplayer maps from the start and you can agree that even without the extra sp content people would wanna buy this.
it may be good business, but its bad for the 360 players.
I wouldnt be surprised if after this, we'll see the odd map pack be released (for a price) every 6 months and odd "general housekeeping" update from epic whilst they update the hell outta their new baby.
GG epic, GG
Triforceowner @ Jul 13th 2007 2:19PM
They Call Me Mellow Yellow...Quite Rightly... By the way, I took back the "troll" statement. Anyway, I didn't know Gears "made" Epic. I thought it was Unreal Tournament, but I could be wrong.
I'm not exactly sure why you are pissed, even after reading your comment. Gears was obviously going to be a PC port, and even though PC receives some content 360 gamers won't immediately have you're still going to get Gears 2 and Unreal 3.
"His lies" was actually refferring to Gears on the PS3, but I see you probably typed that out of the agony of a PC port?
Personally I can't make a judgement on Halo 3's graphics. The E3 trailer was too fast for me to catch anything, and I can't exactly freeze frame to check that kind of stuff (it just doesn't work for me). As for the gameplay, what did you expect. It's probably going to be a *lot* like Halo 2, except with new campaign, multiplayer maps, weapons, AI, etc.
This is kind of like how Zelda is never drastically different, but it always offers new puzzles, characters, dungeons, and items.
Anyway, as for failure rates and all, Microsoft has admitted to some problem or another and they are covering it via their warranty extension. Any console you get back at this point should have the proper heat sinks and all, and if you were really lucky you melted your motherboard and they put in a new chip... oh, but that won't happen for a few more months.\
And sorry about seeming to rag on you. "And guys, don't let trolls like Titty Pink get you down. His lies aren't even worth reading [Gears of War (main series) can not touch the PS3]. Thanks for the article, even though it had nothing to do with Gears of War." Not my kind of usual writing, frankly.

Gotta be REALLY STUPID to believe that Micro$oft Games, GoW publisher, will NEVER release the extra content for the 360 at 1200 MSP after the PC version sales die in a few months.
Dustin, you surprise me sometimes. Got coffee today?
razer @ Jul 13th 2007 3:30PM
I think it's been alread said but the "If we give the 360 the same content why buy the PC version"... Well newsflash genius people will buy the PC version because they don't own an Xbox 360!
If they are actually implying that people will buy it again on the PC then they are truely off their freakin rocker!
I think all that speedy driving in his new lambo(thanks to 360 fans) has shook his brains up.

Unreal Tournament 3 and Haze are only exclusive to the Playstation 3 for about 3 months time. Early in 2008 they will both be released for the Xbox 360.
In fact, Epic makes it clear that the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 will have its advantages over the Playstation 3 version, depending on your point of view.
Sony points out that the PS3 is compatible with the maps that PC gamers design for Unreal Tournament 3. However, there will literally be hundreds of thousands of maps designed, most of which are very poor quality. Sony never said how those maps could be accessed by the Playstation 3. All of those PC maps also will NOT be optimized for the Playstation 3 hardware.
With the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3, gamers will not have direct access to the hundreds of thousands of maps that PC gamers create. Instead, Microsoft and Epic will work together to select the BEST maps that PC gamers create. Those maps will then be professionally optimized for the Xbox 360 hardware by the people at Epic. After the maps have been optimized for the Xbox 360 hardware, they will be released to the public either for free for a very inexpensive charge each month.
Personally, I would rather have the maps that are optimized for the hardware. But I think it is very obvious that the best version of Unreal Tournament 3 will actually be the PC version, which will also be released in 2007.
The Playstation 3 controller isn't designed very well for First-Person Shooters. Unreal Tournament started out as a PC game where you use a Mouse and Keyboard while seated at a desk or table. You can turn the PC resolution of Unreal 3 all the way up to over 2500 lines of resolution if you have a powerful enough PC. The consoles don't come close to that level of potential performance.
Triforceowner @ Jul 13th 2007 4:13PM
Well, Killzone 2 looks like a generic combination of Call of Duty (the skirmishes), Gears of War (the cover system), and Halo (the hulking enemy boss). The E305 trailer had a bit more promising outlook on the game's originality, and the E307 trailer seemed to focused too much on looking graphically like the E305 trailer and not enough like the E305 trailer gameplay-wise.
Now, Gears of War for the 360 is such a brilliant game even now it is hard to justify calling it inferior to even its port that only has more content. I'm sure Gears of War 2 will make Gears of War look inferior, but a PC port at this point can't exactly do that.
Also note that Unreal 3 and Haze are coming to the 360 some three to six months after they hit the PS3, but who really cares? BioShock, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Halo 3, The Orange Box, Hell's Highway, and Call of Duty 4 will keep the interest of any 360 FPS fan.
Not to mention the Haze trailer at the Sony press conference was an insult to gamers' intelligence.
Sony is cool, but Sony trolls suck, "Sony OWNED e3".
Titty Pink @ Jul 13th 2007 4:36PM
Gears "made" epic for this generation...and to think about it, Unreal never was considered a great shooter by console gamers (as far as I know). If this wasn't the case (that Gears made epic for the generation), they wouldn't have made the point to say "from the studio that brought you...(drum roll pls...GEARS OF WAR). I'm not even looking forward to the new UT AFTER the trailer. Just one more FPS rental. Any word on a campaign mode? William has a point about the controller though, but there are whispers of a keyboard/mouse capability w/ the PS3. I hate the combo, but a KB/M combo will pwn a controller any day of the week, and to mix the peripherals in an online shootout will produce bad results for the guy holding the controller. FPS games are OK for the PS3, but I still prefer the big potato (360 controller). Hell I prefered the first gen Xbox controller (you old school xbox fans remember the HUGE ones right?). Back to the topic, still pissed. I understand that it's smart business, but fortunately in America I still have the freedom to be pissed...and be ripped off by HMOs...and live with the fact that we've created a terrorist state in Iraq...

@35,
I agree that the Unreal game franchise was never considered anything special in terms of being a "killer-app."
Unreal is a franchise just like Doom. It was the sort of game series that Epic first became known for, just like Doom was the first game series that the company called id-software became known for. And in the same way that Epic developed a graphics engine and named it after their first game series--Unreal, id-software created a graphics engine and named it after their first game sieries--the Doom graphics engine.
Gears of War is definitely 100% the game that put Epic on the map. It's easy to say that Epic should name their next graphics engine "Gears of War Graphics Engine," but the problem with that is the Microsoft has purchased the Intellectual Property rights to Gears of War, which means that multiplatform developers and businessmen that run those companies might interpret a "Gears of War Graphics Engine" as being optimized only for the Xbox or PC platforms.
In all honesty, the Unreal Graphics Engine has been receiving a lot of complaints lately for the PS3. It was actually a help to the Xbox 360 that the game Unreal will be released 3 months earlier on the PS3, because it will give third-party developers more confidence in the Unreal Graphics Engine. In reality, that HELPS the Xbox 360! Look at the way companies like Square Enix now use the Unreal Graphics Engine more than anything else, and release games either exclusively for the Xbox 360 or in a multi-platform way when the Unreal engine is used. That obviously has HELPED the Xbox 360.
The cool thing is that the Xbox 360 versions of games using the Unreal graphics engine are always better. The Xbox 360 version of the Unreal graphics engine is nearly identical to the PC version. Those two versions receive two-thirds of the resources. The PS3 version is different and receives only one-third of the resources.
The Unreal Graphics Engine really has been a form of trojan horse victory for the Xbox 360, because it is the most used graphics engine in the industry, and it is better on the PC and Xbox 360. The market for PC and Xbox 360 is so huge, it cannot be ignored. If a developer decides to use the Unreal graphics engine for a PS3 game, it would be incredibly inexpensive to put that game on the PC and Xbox 360--two platforms with a MUCH LARGER installed base of users and potential buyers of the product.
lachlan @ Jul 13th 2007 8:08PM
it just means they'll lose the money i would have payed to play it on 360.
there's no way i'm paying for gears again. but i'll play the pc version for free.
Dave @ Jul 13th 2007 8:34PM
If Epic won't bring that 1 new act with the 5 extra chapters to the Xbox 360 in the form of additional downloads, just so they can sell the PC version of the game, I think that sucks!
If they are going to try and force people who already own the Xbox 360 versioin of the game to buy the PC version of the game, just so they can be selfish and greedy, to try and make more money, then I will be selfish and greedy, too.
My friends and I have already decided we are going to get Gears of War PC...the pirated version for free!

U know, Epic could still let the pc have the content for a month or so then make it available on 360 and still get the desired effect they want for the pc version. Not just strait up shun the platform that made the game what it is.
