Circuit City ad confirms 360 price drop on all models

Alright kids, it's probably safe to put the term "rumor" to bed now. Tipster ToeFurB sends us (and Joystiq) images of an upcoming Circuit City ad which reconfirms the 360 price drops we've seen in the Wal-Mart and Toys R' Us ads. The 360 Premium will see a $50 price break, the Elite will be reduced by $30, and the Core slims down by $20. For the Premium, Elite, and Core, this results in prices of $349, $449, and $279 respectively. Not only that, but those who purchase the newly discounted Premium console from Circuit City will also receive a free copy of Rockstar's Table Tennis. The ad is dated for August 12, so mark your calendars.

I knew the price drop was imminent. Now just wait for a post on Major Nelson's blog or GSB.
rishid @ Jul 31st 2007 2:27PM
The price drop is pretty pathetic in my opinion. The console has been out for almost 2 full years and dropping it a measly $50? This is not the best move for Microsoft to win this console race.
ryan @ Jul 31st 2007 2:28PM
i don't care how much they drop the price, i won't buy a 360 unless i know for sure it carries a 65nm chip and won't break on me.
if there is no guarantee of this i'm just gonna have to buy a PS3 when it has some games (i'm talking this fall and all of next year and beyond once developers get comfy with it like the PS2).
not a fanboy, just want a dependable system.
TORO @ Jul 31st 2007 2:31PM
I think it's pretty good competing price Rishid, this will just give it an extra push because it's already winning the console race by far. (in my book Wii is not in the race because I don't care for it, maybe a go-kart race).
itsburnsie @ Jul 31st 2007 2:41PM
@ ryan
"not a fanboy, just want a dependable system."
If you're not a PS3 fanboy, then you had better be paid by Sony... otherwise spending free time reading about, then commenting negatively on a console you don't even own is pretty sad and pathetic.
BTW, Core console @ $279 instead of $249, now they're just getting greedy. Whatever happened to "direct competition with the Wii." If they're not going to do this, they may as well eliminate the "core" altogether... they probably should anyway.
WTangoFoxtrot @ Jul 31st 2007 2:42PM
the price drop may be because they are trying to clear off the current stock of 360's to make way for the new better cooler ones.......
...........or..........
.......these are the new better cooler ones which i heard are also cheaper to manufacture hence the price drop !!
Brian @ Jul 31st 2007 2:42PM
Hopefully, they will have more of these in stock than they did on the 2 for 1 1600 point cards this week.
Dadidito @ Jul 31st 2007 2:46PM
I think its a good move. They are still winning the race against Sony and if the $50 drop doesn't make it better, then can always go a little lower when the 65mn xbox roll out.
NeoteriX @ Jul 31st 2007 2:47PM
@ itsburnsie,
For your information, there are others who are waiting on the sideline for Microsoft to put the 65nm on the shelves. I for one am not considering the PS3 at all, but the 65nm is a necessary thing before I take the plunge into the next-gen.
TORO @ Jul 31st 2007 2:55PM
@people waiting for 65nm
Hopefully you won't wait past this fall, because there's tons of great games ur missing out on. And if u decide to buy PS3, well have fun watching movies!
Tony @ Jul 31st 2007 2:55PM
MS claims they're not knowingly shipping out any faulty systems at this point, so I don't know how much it even matters.
Phocas @ Jul 31st 2007 2:59PM
Silly Ryan, if you get a console that was born after May 30th you will be fine. Peter Moore said the fix was in the pipe line for weeks before they announced it. MS found the problem and corrected it. That is what happens when you throw a Billion at a issue, it seems to go away. If you want to wait and miss out on all the games this fall be my guest... your loss.
DjDATZ @ Jul 31st 2007 3:05PM
Halo 3 4-player co-op confirmed. Hit up Joystiq for details. even more details to be posted on bungie.net later tonight.
LilTmac2003 @ Jul 31st 2007 3:10PM
I am glad to see the price drop... Though the Core should be 249.99, that is IF it's going to be discontinued...
john @ Jul 31st 2007 3:54PM
Priced exactly where it needs to be right now if you ask me. The only other thing Microsoft might do is run an promotional offer during the holidays.
yankeyhotel @ Jul 31st 2007 3:57PM
so where does the special edition Halo 3 Xbox 360 come in now. My guess $400 sounds about right, anyone else?
NeoteriX @ Jul 31st 2007 4:10PM
"Missing out on games"
I'm pretty sure the games will still be there, even if I decide to buy the system a year from now... :)
scott @ Jul 31st 2007 5:45PM
I sincerely hope this is wrong. $30 off Elite? Really Microsoft?!?! That's what you're going to do? Give me a break. I have been patiently waiting to get an XBOX Elite and this is how they are supposed to lure me in? The thing used to be $80 more than the Premium, for essentially a bigger hard drive because I don’t care about HDMI. Now, with these disproportionate price cuts, the cost difference now INcreases to $100 between premium and elite. (I wouldn't even think about the Elite if a 120 GB hard drive didn't cost 4 times what it aactually should in Microsoft land...)Shouldn’t you be dropping the more expensive sku to entice would be buyers (read: me) to spend a little more? Not to mention, like everyone has said, it’s been out for two years now! Rather disappointing if you ask me.
Mike @ Jul 31st 2007 7:45PM
Some of Xbots are funny..... This isn't a price drop, there are trying to do what SONY is doing by lowering the price of the currenct model or model(s) to release new editions.. At least the PS3 or revision will work after 8 months!!!
Oh yeah, TORO... That the was a great comment about watching movies this holiday season (sarcasim) but you must have forgot about SONY having basically the same line-up besides Xbox360 having around 4 exclusives and SONY having around 8 for the PS3 alone...
The movie insult was a nice try (more sarcasim) but what you should REALLY be thinking about is:
1. Why did your beloved Peter Moore leave? I think I just had Deja-vu(cough, dreamcast).
2. Will your 360 even work during this impressive holiday season for gaming PERIOD!!!
Good luck trying not to RED RING!!!
HOLLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Darko @ Jul 31st 2007 8:16PM

...Troll in denial
Mass Effect, BioShock, Fable 2, Halo 3, Too Human, Halo Wars, Lost Odyssey, etc... not to mention a ton that already came out.
The only thing of interest to me on the ps3 is Heavenly Sword. Thats it.
Go troll elsewhere.
Come back and argue with me when:
-The ps3 costs 400 bucks
-There are at least 10 MUST HAVE games
-You remove that giant poll lodged in your ass
-You are no longer being paid by sony
-And when you grow a brain
... I could go on
Cheers!
Mike S @ Jul 31st 2007 8:26PM
@ Darko
Now I am planning to buy a 360 during this price drop so don't take this the wrong way,
but what 10 must have games does the 360 have?
I only ever hear about GoW and Halo and Halo isn't even out yet.
ryan @ Jul 31st 2007 8:53PM
haha, i'm a fanboy because i want a system i know will work for me?
and how can you tell me that going into my local bestbuy can guarantee that May 31 birthdate?
i'm just saying that so far the PS3 hasn't had many problems with it's HARDWARE. and i agree, the games are still gonna be there next year. i'll get both systems but i just would like a guarantee that's all.
ZeroCorpse @ Jul 31st 2007 10:31PM
@ryan...
Don't know what you're talking about. I've had a 360 since launch, and it's been rock solid. No red rings. No scratched discs. No problems whatsoever.
I think you're just gullible enough to let scary stories affect you, even if you haven't confirmed first-hand that the scary stories are true. I personally don't care if you want to wait, but in the meantime I've been enjoying my 360, and I'd appreciate it if you'd stop spreading rumors about the system being unreliable when you don't even own one and can't attest to the system's reliability yourself.
All I'm saying is that I sold them, and only got a couple people saying they had problems (this was out of several hundred sold at the time) and I've owned one since launch, and have had nothing but good experiences with the 360. You're acting on FUD, not on fact, and that's sort of sad and a little pathetic.
And so what if it did, on some off chance, break down? It's called a WARRANTY. They fix it. You're not losing anything but a little time, and you're already making it clear you don't mind a wait to play your games. Why not play them, take the risk, and if you have to wait while they fix it you're NOT OUT ANYTHING ANYWAY.
But like I said-- Since DAY ONE of launch, and I've never had a problem. You're just buying into the horror stories without any practical experience.
Mike S @ Jul 31st 2007 11:31PM
@ Zero Corpse
He's buying into the horror stories?!?!?!
Microsoft themselves said that every xbox 360 released was defective
what other source do you want?
ryan @ Aug 1st 2007 1:58AM
sorry to confuse you with someone who didn't own one first hand.
i've went through 5 360's during Winter this year. you could say it was a string of bad luck, you could also say some of those "horror stories" might be true.
getting a fixed 360 back with the warranty can take up to a whole month. so you'll get it back but you'll have nothing to play with during the time being. (and why should i have to even use a warranty for a product i've owned only two weeks?) if i bought it, i expect to use it.
regardless, i've been jaded on getting a new console ever since. now with all these great games on the rise in a few months, you could maybe understand my plight? i just would appreciate a guarantee from MS to set my "pathetic" mind at ease. a sort of "there, there pathetic ryan, we'll make a system that you won't have to send back over and over."
make sense? sound a bit better than -$50 for a console that may or may not break?
ryan @ Aug 1st 2007 2:06AM
oh, and scratched discs are depressing! lol
my family had a party going on while i was coming home from school...cousin moved the 360 upright to flatways while Gears of War was spinning (i don't know why he just did it).
i came home and well, yeah. that was displeasing to say the least.
fanboih8r @ Aug 1st 2007 2:14PM
Overall, I'm not impressed with how any of these consoles have been produced and marketed. Instead of a price cut on the 360, repair the pathetically flawed design. As for the Wii, was cool for a week, but beyond that you have to be 6yrs old. PS3 is a ridiculously over-priced system(not so much with price drop) that appeals to a very small market. Unless M$ repairs their terrible design(possibly worst mass-marketed technical design flaw in history), Sony gets their giant head out of their a$$, or Nintendo confronts their Peter Pan syndrome, I'll stick with my Xbox and PS2. Price drop from any system won't matter.
Si @ Aug 1st 2007 2:56PM
Darko you answered Mike's post 19 very efficiently. To the point: listing exclusive games that are sure hits onlyon Xbox 360. Everytime I see a Sony fanboy make the same stupid cliams that PS3 is "going" to have all these good exclusives coming to it and has almost all of the same games 360 has, someone like yourself or me will reply back with the answer that matters which is what you indicated above. That dope went on about Peter Moore leaving is what 360 owners should be "concerned" about?? Has he realized that since Peter Moore left that EA will be adverstising Xbox 360 exclusively in their games and Sony has to swallow it like a prostitue with no choice in the matter. These Sony assholes are so funny... I read their blogs and posts to just get a good laugh. They are constantly talking about how they can't wait for when the developers learn how to code to their Blue Ray black box failure. Ummm the PS3 has been in existence since the 360 made its announcement along with PS3 back at the E3 2005 show... there have always been development machines out before the launch to get accustomed to it. Face it Sony ass-wipe, the developers prefer the 360's architecure and development tool over the $500 Black USB Hub/Blue Ray you call gaming system PS3. Continue to post to the 360 fanboy with your ridiculous claims. And to all the other idiots who say that it's not a real price cut and that the 360 would not be working after 8 months... at this point does it matter??? Microsoft is honoring all warranties and have extended them for THREE years.. it will be fixed for free. Can Sony say that?? No, because the sales rate is so low that there are too little to even be considered an issue. Of course there may not be any burned out PS3's because there are no variety of games that it has to play long hours with LMAO!!! I mean come on... the 360 may be overheating after hours and hours of use but that is because there are tons of hot games worth playing for hours. PS3 can never claim the amount hours on any game or games combined that has been played by Gears of War players alone. Just just GoW, not even speaking of all the other hits that 360 has. Man just shut the hell up and go watch a Blue Ray movie or plug your PSP into your PS3 and then play some games.

So we all know that the 64nm chip runs cooler, which is obviously a welcomed improvement. But my question is will this new, cooler chip still push the same framerates? Same graphics? Better graphics?

@ Darko
The exclusive games I were talking about for both systems are coming out this CURRENT year... Some of the games you mentioned arent coming out til next year so before you try to 1UP me, have your facts str8! Also, Mike S. was right, the ONLY game you Xbots have is Gears Of War (which is a pretty game, with a 6-hour run thru).
The only reason why the 360 is in the lead of the console wars (the WII is right behind in actual sales) is because REPLACEMENTS are for some reason are acutally counting as SALES! Its not my fault that 360s are faulty (ALL 11.6 which was announced). I am a fellow gamer and I hope that you guys can enjoy this holiday season just as every other PS3 or Wii gamer will.
@ Si
Do you know that drugs kill brain cells?
Cause with that comment you made, you gotta be smoking crack!!
1. Peter Moore is in charge of EA Sports NOT EA intirely(Get your facts Right before you try to come off intelligent). EA's sports titles make too much $$$$ to be an exclusive, genius!
2. Also, what games did the 360 have when it first launched? The only MAJOR game it had was COD2.. Nice Try! Every console has a launch slump... You may be playing A game (cough.Gears) but that doesnt change the fact that M$ is loosing $ on the 360 and will not make any of it back, just like the original XBOX (check out GamePro if you doubt me).
3. Just because M$ gave you guys a 3-year warranty doenst cover-up the fact that they F'd up... It took them almost 2-YEARS to finally admit that not only a fraction of the 360s are faulty, but potientally ALL OF THEM are. Sony doenst have to give a 3-year warranty because they made a great system. Especially, seeing what the PS2 went through. Even the orginal XBOX had HDD failures. I mean, M$ ( Bill Gates) has alot of $, why cant they make a console that work? It shouldnt be that hard.. Sega did it, Sony is doing, and Nintendo is doing it! Its not about be a fanboy, its about principle.. If I spend $400, $500 or $600, I want my system to work PERIOD! I dont care if they gave a life-time warranty, the only thing the M$ did was give you guys a 3-year warranty having piece of crap... I wouldnt of bought a PS3 if it wouldnt last either. I dont see PS3's failing like drunks during a driving test, its 360s that are messing up!
4. The 360 is will be easier to develope because its been out a whole year before PS3... Drugs due cause memory-loss too, you know buddy?
Bottom-line, this is not acceptable! $279, $349, and $449 is way too much for a system that has a history of failing... You can bash Sony or whoever you want to, but this doesnt change the fact that instead of wasting $399 for a failing system, its NOW $50 cheaper! Now, thats making $$$, huh(even more sarcasim)?!
PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!
italiansmoke @ Aug 5th 2007 6:34PM

Sorry dude, but that statement doesn't make you look or seem any better off than anyone with crack-induced eyes.
From a business perspective, that price range could be considered the sweet spot. Hell, even $20 lower than what the prices are now would be considered a sweet spot. I would imagine that 360's would sell even faster than they are now.
From a consumers perspective, that price range should be considered friendly to anyones wallet. Considering that i've been having fun, and meeting new people all while PS3 gamers are still pissin n moaning about lack of games, etc etc. As far as price, those prices are great! Cheaper than the PS3(not surprised Sony!), and still maintaining a great library, great specs & usability, and an overall complete mockery of the PS3.
The Wii shouldn't even be considered in this topic. The Wii is marketed to kids! Let the big boys play their adult consoles, and leave the kiddies to wave their wand and color the console with their crayons.
Bottom line: The 360 owns both consoles. Because it's a great console(albeit horrid in reliability), but when it does work kicks butt, tremendously.
