HDMI connectivity to become a 360 standard?
According to a (somewhat reputable) rumor mole who tipped off tech site ars technica, HDMI connectivity will be making its way into both the Core and Premium Xbox 360 models rather soon. Ars technica says that rumor talk of HDMI being added to all Xbox 360 consoles started back at E3 when the Halo 3 360 was announced and they got someone at Microsoft to admit that "HDMI will probably be standard moving forward". Now, after the price cut announcement, a rumor mole popped up telling ars technica that HDMI will be added to Core and Premium Xbox 360s starting late August, early September when a new graphic will be added to the retail packaging proclaiming the new HDMI connection. So, will all this rumor talk of HDMI becoming a 360 standard turn out to be true? Well, we're going to err on the side of pessimism and call this bologna simply because HDMI is one of the major selling points for the Elite system. HDMI becoming standard would take a bullet point away from the Elite. But then again, we'd love to be proved wrong.

currently I use a vga cable to connect to my tv, and both my hd tv's only go to 1080i :(

Ya would think wouldn't ya
Mad @ Aug 8th 2007 11:25AM
Yea I only have have one HDMI port on my TV which only does up to 1080i. That HDMI port is already being used by my upconverting DVD player (which is how it's gonna stay).
xenocidic @ Aug 8th 2007 11:29AM
meh,,, i haven't made the plunge into hdtv-ity yet
would be nice for some kind of upgrade path (trade in pay a bit extra to get the HDMI functionality) tho
Lharmon @ Aug 8th 2007 11:44AM
My GF and I both have the exact same 57" hdtv which are capable of 1080p over HDMI connection. She has the elite, I have the premium... I notice a difference. I notice some clarity difference. Although it's very small, it's something.
I kind of hope they don't do this, just because I already felt a little screwed on the elite (I got my console shortly before they announced the release).
root @ Aug 8th 2007 11:56AM
cool. maybe next time your box smokes into a ring of death you'll get a hdmi port.
Justin @ Aug 8th 2007 11:59AM
sucks for the early adopters.....well...anybody who has one thats not an elite.
skunkworks @ Aug 8th 2007 12:01PM
I don't know why every one is so bone hard over HDMI. vga or dvi does just as well. HDMI is just another form of copy protection forced on us by the movie industry.

If this is true, all I can say is that if I ever get the RROD my replacment box better still be able to do component out since my HD set only has component inputs. If there ends up being no component option and HDMI only in the future I think MS is making a mistake in estimating how many non HDMI folks are out there. Sony is taking a lot of heat now since their PS3 can not upscale 720p games to 1080i which means that a lot of folks with 1080i only HD sets (like me) get to play the game in glorious 480p :-(

The $3000 DVDO iScan VP50 is about the only thing that would turn my no-720p no-1080p HDTV into something worth using with all this new-fangled equipment. I give my set maybe 10 more years of life and THEN maybe something other than component will be important, long after any Xbox 360 will still matter, and probably 3 or 4 replacements of HDMI with something 'better'.
Actually, stocking up on thing that HAVE component output will probably be smart, as it gets eliminated as a possible source of 'pirated' material...
MIkesOnline @ Aug 8th 2007 12:35PM
I would love to have hdmi to see if it makes a difference, but to be honest, I use component and everything looks amazing especially the Matrix and 300 on HD DVD.
h0mi @ Aug 8th 2007 12:42PM
$280 for a core system with HDMI?
Hmm... I'd think about it. It'd let me leave my premium at my sister's house, and maybe I'd have some use finally for my 512mb memory card.
Ghaleon @ Aug 8th 2007 1:04PM
MS is probably assuming that all the early adoptors' systems have imploded by now anyway.
NeoteriX @ Aug 8th 2007 1:44PM
65nm? :(

X3F, I'm ready to blog for you whenever you want me.
mike @ Aug 8th 2007 5:37PM
wow are those pics real? If so, ill go out right now looking for a premium july manufactured date. All I want is a cheap hdmi 360, I care nothing for that hard drive.
And you wont get a job here. 360fanboy is an index site, they hardly EVER report anything. All they do is post other stories that other sites have.

Just playing, Josh--it's one of my favorite blogs, and I think they do excellent work. I already have a job as a journo.
Iliad Force @ Aug 8th 2007 6:00PM
Update: the guy who posted the shots has taken them down, for some reason (hmm), but a crafty Web site captured them before they went missing:

And I being even craftier, capture the original pics before he covered up the serial numebrs.
The last 6 digits in his serial are 772707. If that means anything
russny @ Aug 8th 2007 6:14PM
Engadget says these new XBOX 360's come with the 65nm chips. Can that be verified somehow? I've been waiting for an HDMI enabled 360 with 65nm chips and was going to buy an Elite, but if I can get a Premium or Core with HDMI and 65nm chips then that would be great!
russny @ Aug 8th 2007 6:16PM
mike,
That's not a serial number, that's product ID number.
JMillion @ Aug 9th 2007 2:06AM
thas weird. i just received my new 360 from microsoft yestrday. and that was made 7.25.07. no hdmi here.
