Wired chronicles the development of Halo 3

If you've moseyed on by your local newsstand, or whatever the kids call 'em these days, you may have seen the Master Chief plastered on the cover of Wired magazine. As our more astute readers have probably surmised, the issue contains a lengthy article on Halo 3. Specifically, the article deals with the extensive testing process that Halo 3 has undergone to ensure that the game is as close to perfect as it can be. Believe it or not, Bungie knows that lots of people were unsatisfied with Halo 2 (many Bungie employees weren't satisfied with it). The combat wasn't balanced, there were plenty of glitches, and the story, well, the story wasn't what Bungie wanted it to be. This time though, Bungie has employed an army of testers to make sure that the game is satisfying to everyone from the pros to Halo n00bs to Grandma (well, maybe not Grandma). As noted by the article, the Halo 3 testing process leans more towards science than artistry. Bungie recorded play sessions, recorded players' reactions during those play sessions, had players stop to note their satisfaction every 20 minutes, and much more. The amount of statistics recorded is really staggering, and all of it done to make sure that Halo 3 -- particularly Halo 3's campaign -- is the best damned game it can possibly be.
The article hasn't made it online yet, so you'll have to pick up a copy of Wired if you want the full scoop.

Comments:
1- I'll admit to being a Halo 3 fanboy, thanks to the Beta.
2- Halo 2 didn't suck, but was so halfassed it's hilarious.
with that said, I'm willing to forgive Bungie on their past misgivings if Halo 3 really does make wet my pants. I'm very dubious on the campaign...

The article is a good read. What I would give to get some of those map statistics.

This game will please the masses, single player and multiplayer enthusiasts.
Whiskey I agree with you, with the Beta alone we got a glimpse of how "perfect" this game will be.

hype is okay but this constant out pour of content even after they anounced that the bundle there giving you is just getting out of hand isnt there gonna be a making of halo3 and extras with the legendary edition with all the halo content for the so called full halo experience. isnt most of this news old. @1 i had quite the opposite reaction to the beta it was just new paint but then i thought maybe them not changing it up wasnt that bad, i went over a friends house to have one final halo 2 LAN party before he moves and then i remembered why i love halo multiplayer. as long as halo 3 has a mute feature so i can blot out any racist dumass 13 year old throwing around the N word like its cool. the occasional F*ck or bull sh*t or get the F*ck out my way you little B*tch is cool just dont abuse it. what would of been nice is if you pre orderd for a legedndary pack you put down your head size and they ship you a helmet you can actually wear.

In the Beta was a great feature to only hear the people in your party or you can choose to only hear people on your team.

Funny how the scanner couldn't handle the neon orange color of the mag cover...it looks pink!

Unrelated to this article, I just wanted to thank the X3F staff for bringing SonyDefenseForce.com to my attention. Not since the Drudge Report first went live have I enjoyed seeing through the slanted vision of a blind "yes-man."
From the Bioshock review, to their assertion that since HD-DVD exclusive Paramount sans Steven Spielberg means he will go exclusively Blu-Ray, to MULTIPLE articles that Rockstar has been bought by Sony. If someone your best friend knows from the local Gamestop clerks who knows a guy in silicon valley heard it, it must be fact. Trust me, it's a good read, jump on over to their site.

Well 360WTF has scans...
Just read through them, although I largely knew most of this was happening as Frankie talked about it in a weekly update, I never knew it was to this EXTENT and that it was THIS detailed. Absolutely stunning, amazing, and MIND-BLOWING.
Makes me want to make love to Halo 3.
Mark my words, Halo 3 WILL sell $200 Million in the first night/day and this will be a record for a LONG time to come.
bigmac375 @ Aug 20th 2007 9:40PM
there is nothing else to say, other than i am extremely pumped for halo 3.

My god, that article singlehandedly tripled my internal hype meter for H3.

"Sony's graphically superior PlayStation 3"
Nice. I know Wired likely wanted to pump up the drama when pitting the 360/Halo 3 against its "tough" competition, but really, I'm not sure how that line above was concluded.

"i had quite the opposite reaction to the beta it was just new paint"
And we're surprised?
"as long as halo 3 has a mute feature so i can blot out any racist dumass 13 year old throwing around the N word like its cool"
Which leads me to believe, and adds credibility that you never actually had a 360, and you haven't actually played the H3 beta, as anyone who did participate in the Beta knows how easy it was to mute someone, and how the voice worked.
Nice try, but you're slowly giving out facts which dispute your claim that you actually had a 360.

Want to read the article, not so much that I need to ingest every last scrap of hype and content for Halo 3, but because Clive Thompson is a great tech writer.
