NPD: PS3 makes headway, still topped by 360
The NPD numbers for July are out, and despite many analyst's predictions, the PS3 didn't manage to outsell our beloved Xbox 360 (though the 360 did see a decrease of roughly 28K). The PS3 did manage to make some considerable headway, finally breaking 100K units in a single month, no doubt helped along by the "price reduction" Sony started last month. The Wii, surprisingly, managed to outsell the DS, which has reigned supreme for quite some time, and took the top spot in console sales. As usual though, Sony still has something to crow about, as the PSP and PS2 managed to outsell the 360 again.- Nintendo Wii: 425K
- Nintendo DS: 405K
- Sony PlayStation 2: 222K
- Sony PSP: 214K
- Microsoft Xbox 360: 170K
- Sony PlayStation 3: 159K
- Nintendo GBA: 87K

What is funny is all the analyists stating the PS3 would outsell the 360 in July due to the price cut and the 360's bad press.
Now lets hope that MS can reinvigorate their market with their price cut, the unholy excellent games coming out this fall, and them addressing the RROD issue.
Bert @ Aug 24th 2007 4:21PM
Can someone please tell me who is still buying PS2's. Seriously, what's the point? I can't believe that 222,000 PS2's were sold last month.
GregA @ Aug 24th 2007 2:16PM
I just want to point out, not that everyone already didn't know this...
But VGChartz.com was off by a huge margin of error. They were not even close to the numbers generated by a real market analyst firm, so you can stop digging them. In fact, I suggest Bury + Lame all stories with VGChartz in them.
Hibernation @ Aug 24th 2007 2:22PM
Dodge Neons and Saturns sell a WHOLE lot more than BMW's and Cadillacs. Britney Spears sells a whole lot more than Stevie Wonder and hot dogs sell a whole lot more than lobster.
At the end of the day, Nintendo is a family-fun-night based system and the 360 is a badass machine that hates everybody an has nightmares of slaughtering pregnant teens. We win.
PS
Who the fuck is actually buying PS2's and PSP's still? Seriously, I love my psp (shame) and the PS2 was a great system as well, but WTF? eat ass
Bravo6 @ Aug 24th 2007 2:28PM
ROFLMAO.. hibernation is my hero
Dale @ Aug 24th 2007 2:35PM
Let me reiterate the question: who the f**k is buying PSPs? Horrible little machines.
mike @ Aug 24th 2007 2:46PM
Whos buying ps2s? That machine is like 8 years old now, and compared to todays games, complete crap (sure it was great at the time). I just see buying a ps2 now as a waste of money, especially when there is a plethora of used consoles you can buy on ebay for like $40 or less
DjDATZ @ Aug 24th 2007 2:52PM
LOL mike and Hibernation are my heroes.
I'd honestly want to know who really IS buying PS2's? I mean...next gen is out...get with the program.
To all the analysts that predicted that the PS3 would massively outsell the 360 due to its bad press and the PS3's price drop: I'm glad you were wrong. The 360 MONSTERS the PS3 AGAIN.
brownc4 @ Aug 24th 2007 2:55PM
87k GBA's???? Are these people just unaware of the DS?
ryan @ Aug 24th 2007 3:03PM
i think the Ps2 is a great buy for parents to introduce games to their kids vs. expensive consoles that take much more attention and care (scratched discs anyone?)
it's also still a great buy for the true casual gamer who plays quick games like DDR or even Guitar Hero.
overall untill the new systems gain a price over the PS2, the PS2 will continue to reign supreme.
now the PS3 on the other hand...whoa boy, don't wanna touch that for another 3 years!
DeadPlasmaCell @ Aug 24th 2007 3:04PM
Well played Hibernation.. well played.
I think Kotaku put it best:
"When the 360 becomes world-famous for simply not working, plus you drop your prices by $100 and still can't outsell it, there's only so much spin you can put on something before you just can't spin it any further."
Marasai @ Aug 24th 2007 3:28PM
Yeah, no matter how you try o spin this, it ain't rosy for anyone but nintendo.
MS needs to get aggressive fast or they ps3 might catch them, it is already running the risk of negating their lead in the US by sales abroad.
Sony- when they cut their price (sorry, have a fire sale) and the other guy's console randomly dies every 6th months and you STILL can't beat them, you suck.
With the price drop and bioshock and Halo 3 and the new HDDVD situation, the 360 could start really moving again.
DjDATZ @ Aug 24th 2007 3:31PM
Dead plasma...DEFINITELY true.
While people MIGHT know about the problem, it still got the 360 publicity, and the fact that the console is covered by a 3 year limited warranty is good enough for about 90% of potential consumers. And then drop the price by $100 and people just really don't have an excuse anymore.
I'm reluctant to say this, but until Sony's pricing of the PS3 is anywhere close to the 360, AND get the "total quality" of games remotely close to the 360's there's NO way the ps3 will prevail.
Hibernation @ Aug 24th 2007 4:07PM
Well, the 360 has alot of technical problems from being overplayed to the point that the insides melt. Unfortunately, Sony and Nintendo havent been played enough to truely evaluate the power of their innards. Of course my Notorious B.I.G - Ready to Die CD skips like crazy. Ive listened to it atleast 500 times. However, I cant say the same about my Four Non Blondes album. Should I blame the manufactuers for my Biggie CD skipping? No, its my fault.
DjDATZ @ Aug 24th 2007 3:43PM
Everyone: Mark My Words.
Halo 3 will help Microsoft DEVOUR the PoS3. You could probably put up Heavenly Sword, Lair, and that piece-of-shit-whose-name-I-can't-remember-but-is- supposed-to-be-the-Halo-3-killer game and they STILL would not match up to the VASTNESS and HUGENESS of Halo 3.
(I know hugeness is not a word.)
Otis Whitaker @ Aug 24th 2007 3:53PM
The PS2 continues to sell because it has a library of about 3,000 games, and about 100 of them are decent. The 360 still has yet to come into it's own as far as variety and good games go. The PS2 is a safe, cheap, good bet.
The 360 is a very expensive, non-mass marketable gamble.
Otis Whitaker @ Aug 24th 2007 3:54PM

Your bias is showing!
bigmac375 @ Aug 24th 2007 3:55PM
lets see here.
ps3 had a price drop+360 gets a ton of bad press=360 wins? wow ps3, you just suck.
are there any games coming out for the ps3 this year? ive heard of alot of titles that are coming out next year, but microsoft is going to own the ps3 so bad this year, it is not even funny. price drop anyone? lets see next months sales.
oh and also, halo 3. nuff said.
ymmv @ Aug 24th 2007 3:56PM
I think the PS3's are pretty impressive, considering the fact that the PS3 is twice as expensive as a Wii and doesn't have any system selling games like Nintendo (Wii Sports) and MS (Forza, Gears, Bioshock). Once the number of quality PS3 titles goes up and the price comes down to $400 or below, the PS3 will become a steady seller.
I still don't think that the Wii's succes will last that long. I bought a Wii today (yes, the hype also got me) but I'm not that impressed. It really is in a completely different league compared to my PS3 and Xbox 360. The UI feels like a toy compared to the PS3s XMB, the graphics are PS2/Xbox quality and I'm not convinced by the controller so far. It feels akward instead of adding a new dimension to playing games. I'm going to keep it for Super Mario Galaxies but I don't see it getting quality playing time like my PS3 (6 games, 9 Blu-Ray movies) or my 360 (28 games so far).
Jon @ Aug 24th 2007 4:48PM
@3, thanks to you Hibernation, I spat out my coffee... took a no-doz instead. WEEEE!!!!!!
Seriously, you summed up all the comments I would make on this article, so I guess I'll get back to work now... thanks... a lot...
Magma @ Aug 24th 2007 5:46PM
Anyone bashing the PS2 is a dumbass considering it outsells the all next gen but wii. It's a good system with good selection of games, get over it.
John @ Aug 24th 2007 5:24PM
People are still buying the Ps2 because unlike Microsoft, Sony continues providing for the Ps2 for those who have not made the transition to the "next-gen". Microsoft, however, completely abandoned the Xbox leaving those owners who have not made the transition in the dust.
Legobro @ Aug 24th 2007 8:44PM
Poor and cheap people, are buying PS2. I work at Target, most people go straight for the PS2. It also has more games than the PS3 & 360 put together.
DaFlameking @ Aug 24th 2007 10:40PM
@ 3 Hibernation
I was thinking the same thing. Who the hell is still buying Ps2s? 222,000 people? Holy. don't they know what year it is?
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 25th 2007 12:58AM
for a system said to have no games meh... its doing great to me. could you imagine the headlines if it outsold 360 wtf Console sells out other console with much more to give as of today. Not a good look.
Chris @ Aug 26th 2007 8:47AM
anyone else noticing that the PS3, 360 and the GBA(not a shock) is the consoles that are selling the least.
Knight Marquise @ Aug 25th 2007 1:31PM
PS3Troll~
Everyone, including the analyst expected the PS3 to outsell the 360 in July. As another poster said, if the PS3 can't outsell the 360 with the price cut, positive hype machine coming out of E3, vs all the negative press on the 360...it's a turd, and you simply can't spin that fact.
You tools crack me up...quit looking for affirmation that your purchase was worth it by gauging it against the 360. If it was worth it for you, more power to you. The 360 beating the juggernaught PS3 doesn't make you less of a person. You trying to tear down the 360 and it's adopters, however, does.
