CoD 4 beta exploiters are being punished
A few days back an exploit was discovered allowing anyone to download the Call of Duty 4 beta as long as they could get someone who was already in the beta to recover their Gamertag on a different console. Well, that exploit has since been fixed and is ineffective for getting beta access, but those who used it aren't walking away free and clear.Xbox-Scene is reporting that their internal Microsoft source has confirmed with them that over 23,000 consoles have downloaded the the CoD 4 beta via the exploit and that Microsoft is punishing those users. Supposedly, anyone who used this exploit will be banned from Xbox Live for a 24 hour period due to violating the terms of service agreement. In effect, the Live ban is more of a slap on the metaphorical wrist than a full scale Xbox Live ban.
We have yet to hear from or confirm these 24 hour Xbox Live lockouts, because we don't know of anyone who got in the CoD 4 beta via the Gamertag recovery exploit. But if these mini-bans turn out to be true, then we're sure the complaints will roll in soon enough.

Maxi @ Sep 6th 2007 11:36AM
My Xbox Live won't connect so I'm guessing I'm one of these :P
I got a code aswell but I gave it to a friend as he was confused by the exploit...
Damn me and my generosity!

What about the problem of non-U.S. players introducing unhappy latency into the game? I just played with some jagbag in Japan. The lag made the match almost unplayable.
bigd7387 @ Sep 6th 2007 11:53AM
I think it serves people right. I mean COD4 developers have been pretty fair letting anyone who signed up to get in and for people to violate something like this is stupid and they get what the deserve. Hell ban them for life.
xenocidic @ Sep 6th 2007 11:44AM
LOL, malcom's mom will discipline them
Eddie @ Sep 6th 2007 11:48AM
damn shame that this turned out to be lies.
Morgon @ Sep 6th 2007 11:52AM
24 hours is a little silly, but thank god Microsoft actually pays attention to this Account Recovery activity, and that a developer has stepped up to take measures preventing this type of thing.
I only hope that as time goes on, Microsoft will widen their investigation to include those who use it in other inappropriate ways.
Jon @ Sep 6th 2007 11:56AM
Fair play in my opinion.
HueHue @ Sep 6th 2007 11:58AM
I still want to know if these douchebags will be able to connect to the beta after the 24 hour ban has been lifted.
LJKelley @ Sep 6th 2007 12:06PM
Well deserved punishment. Bravo MS :)

Well shit, I'm screwed. I recovered someones account to get into the beta. After all that bullcrap, that was the initial beta process, I felt like it wasn't a big deal. Hell, I work 3rd shift and I stayed up until 3 pm that day, just to get screwed over by them not knowing what they were doing. I did sign up during the "IF YOU SIGN UP NOW YOU'RE SURE TO GET A TOKEN" period, but hell, I still didn't get that code till about 2 days ago. So all in all, if I get banned for a day, I'll be pissed, as I did nothing wrong. The content I recovered was free downloadable content. I pay 50 bucks a year for access of xbox live and their servers. I did nothing wrong.

24 hr ban from xlive is gay. They should be banned from the beta.
I also concur with the foreigners playing in the beta. Some matches it seems like it's 90% frogs. What's up with that?
Canadians and UK are good in my book though.
E8 Foe @ Sep 6th 2007 12:29PM
Question:
I was going to bring my hard drive over to my buddy's place, just to show him the game, as he didn't get into the beta. Will that get either of us the boot?
KC @ Sep 6th 2007 12:33PM
Why would they ban them for extended periods of time and take the chance of those people not buying their game?
By doing it this way, it makes them look good for taking a stand. At the same time, it doesn't piss off the people who get banned too much and they will still buy the game.
qweewqaz @ Sep 6th 2007 12:35PM
yeah and perm ban for eplsion wtf? :D
SliceGaming.com @ Sep 6th 2007 12:49PM
HAHA, The Beta is awsome though, I'm from the UK and I got it by signing up to the site :S

E8 Foe:
Do yourself a favor and not take any chances... I'd just bring the whole console over.
E8 Foe @ Sep 6th 2007 12:47PM
Wow, how annoying. Wish I didn't have to worry about it, but thanks for the PROTIP, Frank. Unless I get any more official word, I think I will just do exactly that.
Douggy @ Sep 6th 2007 12:51PM
There is such a thing a french Canadians you know...
James McPhail @ Sep 6th 2007 12:51PM
To be honest people whining about being banned when they used an exploit to get into a beta is pretty pathetic.
I really don't get the sense of entitlement some people have when it comes to playing a beta. You are getting to play a game before it is released for free. The developers don't need to be as open with betas as they are. If you aren't paying for it you aren't entitled to complain in my opinion.
Maxi @ Sep 6th 2007 12:53PM
Slicegaming lol? Guess who :D Well I did but I gave it too a friend so I gotta wait. Not much of a punishment tbh but thats not what Microsoft wants to do. Its a good warming as the next will be a 48hours ban starting on Sept 25th :P
DemonG @ Sep 6th 2007 12:57PM
19. There is such a thing a french Canadians you know...
Yeah, and more times than not, they are twice as annoying.
Damn Quebecians...
mirage @ Sep 6th 2007 12:58PM
Looking at the bigger picture, this justifies all of the security precautions that Microsoft takes with download-able content. It really sucks that people do this because anyone with a brain should know that they are monitoring who is accessing this beta. Don't be surprised if Microsoft tightens security even further after this incident. Those of us who legitimately download from the marketplace will always be punished because of the few who try to download things they have not purchased or earned.
Milly @ Sep 6th 2007 1:00PM
I typically don't think of French Canadians as frogs but you raise a good point. If they also consistently talk in the same incohorent drivel, which annoys as much as the 10 year old screeching kids on xbox live, then screw them too.
Scoob @ Sep 6th 2007 1:26PM
So how exactly will they know who has and who hasn't used the glitch? I mean do they have a list of gamertags who are alowed on the beta if so what about those ppl who share their 360 between a few housemates each with a different gamertag - will these ppl be punished just for using content they could access quite legitimatly (sp)
Bearing in mind the really quite ridicoulsy c*** way IW have handled the beta roll out surley this was to be expected!!! I stayed up on several occasions just to have the servers crash when the beta sign up went live - luckily i got a token from the firstwave lottery but the whole thing has been handled very badly! I mean there are still alot of ppl out there who havent heard squat about their beta tokens! And now there are several offers open to european gamers which makes the US beta roll out look half assed!!!! (which it was)
x silence x @ Sep 6th 2007 2:19PM
So ya, I did this for a couple friends. I just called them and they still have access to XBL. Honestly, I think this ban is a joke. Sure my friends "cheated" to get in the beta. But what about the REAL cheaters?!? I've seen much more destructive behavior on XBL and those real cheaters are still playing. Bullshit IMO.
So far this ban is just a rumor. I'll update you all if they get a ban message.
Scoob @ Sep 6th 2007 2:31PM
It would be pretty funny if the ban coincides with mondays 4 hr maintanence(sp)...
MADDDOGGX @ Sep 6th 2007 2:56PM
WELL I GOT INTO THE BETA AND I AM FROM SCOTLAND ISIGNED UP TO THE WEBSITE MONTHS AGO AND I ALSO SIGNED UP TO THE BETA TEST USING MY HOTMAIL.CO.UK ADDRESS , SO IT AINT MY FAULT THEY LET ME INTO THE BETA IT WAS RATHER OBVIOUS WHERE I COME FROM

"7. I think it serves people right. I mean COD4 developers have been pretty fair letting anyone who signed up to get in and for people to violate something like this is stupid and they get what the deserve. Hell ban them for life."
No they didn't. Serves them right for opening up a beta to America only and telling the rest of the world to wait. Should of opened it up world wide like Halo 3.
No one is going to be happy with America getting yet another benefit out of Live while the rest of the world gets shunted again. Sure the UK is getting it soon but has anywhere else been confirmed? No one likes waiting, they pretty much asked for it.
I was gunna glitch my way in the other day to but i figured they'd wind up punishing people for it anyway. I don't mind waiting but i can fully understand why people would cheat there way in.
RichGn @ Sep 8th 2007 7:29PM
What a bunch of moaning losers you are, "wah wah, they deserve the ban, wah wah". Well hedz up kidz, I got on the COD4 beta via this loophole, have had no Xbox Live ban and can still play the COD4 beta at will. COD4 absolutley rocks, but I guess you good little mummies boys will just have to keep playing viva pinata eh????
