Marathon motion sickness gets cured

Freeverse sends word that a title update for Marathon: Durandal is now available. Among other things, the update gives players the option to choose a wider field of view. This option is supposed to help players that have experienced motion sickness whilst playing the game. We haven't personally experienced the alleged motion sickness, so we can't tell you whether or not a wider field of view fixes the problem. If you've fallen victim to the illness yourself, you may want to fire up Marathon and give the new setting a try. Once you're done, come back here and share the results with the rest of the class (unless the result is vomit; you don't need to share that).

I have motion sickness problems from all FPS games. I don't care, I still play CoD games and Metroid 3 anyway.

Yeah, it's been changed for at least a week now. The view is changed significantly by it.
Personally, I've never had a problem.

How do you get motion sickness from watching a tv screen....
TORO @ Sep 6th 2007 3:26PM
This happens because they switched from 30fps to 60fps. The levels are small and you zip around them so fast you get motion sickness. I never got sick tho :)
Glimmerkirk that's sick!

I had some nausea going on after I played the trial right after it came out. But I never get that from FPS's not even the XBLA release of doom, I agree that its just the sheer speed of movement. Will have to give the improved version a shot.

This is the first and only game that has ever given me monition sickness, and I have been playing video games since the 2600.

I play 10-12 feet away from a 96" 720p projected image and have no problems with motion sickness in this game.

"6. How do you get motion sickness from watching a tv screen...." - Guy4
Motion sickness is caused by an inconsistency between what you feel and what you see.
There are two types of motion sickness:
- Feeling motion, but not seeing it. This is what some people get when they try to read or play a videogame in a moving car. The vision portion of their mind removes the "jitter" and presents you with a steady readable image. But you still feel the motion, which makes some people (myself included) queasy.
- Seeing motion, but not feeling it. This is what happens for some people (not me, though) with FPS games. The vision portion of their mind filters out everything except the TV screen, so the screen, and the motion displayed on it, are effectively all that the person sees. But since they don't feel the motion, it make them queasy.
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.

I've never suffered from motion sickness before, especially while playing a game. But the original trial of this game really made me dizzy. It's that weird, faked 3D that does it - when you look up at walls or objects, they looks bigger, and they get small as you look down and away. Combined with the speed that really made me dizzy. Does the update change the trial too?
