It's hard to believe, but the official marketing for Halo 3 began nearly a year ago. It all started with the "Starry Night" commercial that aired in December of 2006. As the first piece of official, mass-marketed material concerning Halo 3, starry night was just the beginning of a very long and carefully orchestrated campaign (of course, if you look back to the trailer from E3 2006, it began even earlier). Brandweek takes a look at the Halo 3 marketing push, which is finally reaching its apex, beginning this week with a unique TV ad campaign -- the first part, "Museum," debuted earlier today. What's so interesting, according to Brandweek, is that most games are beginning their marketing campaign a few weeks prior to launch, whereas Halo 3's push is finally nearing the close. Brandweek's breakdown looks at the Halo 3 beta, Iris, the tangled web of marketing partners, and finally the launch festivities set to begin very soon. It seems like a helluva lot of work for a game millions will buy anyway, but Microsoft contends that such a push is necessary to maintain the appearance of "a big budget, mass media event." It's probably safe to say that such an image has been healthily maintained. All that's left is for Microsoft to deliver a product that lives up to the massive marketing put behind it. Only thirteen days until we find out.
I just ordered my Halo 1 and Halo 2 to catch up. I played a lot of Marathon back in the day (still sorta pissed at Bungie for jumping to Microsoft), but I've never even seen Halo in any form other than youtubes and screenshots. Xbox wasn't a big seller at my college I guess. Counterstrike and Tekken were the big geeky fragfest games where I came from. And I was strictly a Dreamcast fanboy back then.
That commercial made me love Master Chief even more...
It's as if... The Spartans were always effective and efficient, but no one ever thought about one Spartan making a difference in the war alone... Not even Master Chief would have thought so...
When most of his Spartan family was obliterated on reach and the ensuing battles afterwards...
He threw all of the tactics and training out of the window and began to think about one goal and only a few possible ways to accomplish it...
SAVE EARTH...
In order to accomplish this he had to become the most chaoticly destructive entity in the universe...
He had to start thinking less about how he would survive and save lives and more about how much pain, fear and damage he could subject to his enemies until they were no longer a variable in this war...
The pain, the anger and the hatred he has is fueling him...
And like every other savior of our time... He will not stop until there is no will left in his body...
Fiction or not... The Master Chief is a character of inspiration and hope...
I believe in the Master Chief... I believe in Halo 3... Do you?
Really people we know your fanboys. This is not a countdown comment. All i gots to say is...Man halo 3 is cool and all but fuck. Dont matter if i turn on my tv, 360, or radio. People are yelling out "Get Halo 3". I didn't mind the every now and again ad saying "Buy Halo 3". Now its just everywhere, all the time. Its like chill the fuck out. It just gets to the point where i wanna say fuck you bungie and fuck your game. I have had enough of all this. Ya you came out with 2 other halos that were great, you dont have to over push this one to get people to buy it. People know even people who live in the fuckin woods without power know halo 3 is coming. Just cailm down on the ads. We get it!
Fontez, I agree with both of your comments here. Having just read all of the books recently, I can say that Master Chief is more than a genetically-altered supersoldier in tank's armour. He is a belief. He is hope. He is, an inspiration.
(For people that don't know, Master Cheif is NOT the last Spartan and we could EASILY see an appearance by another Spartan sometime during Halo 3. Now that would be an eerie feeling that would send chills up my spine.)
And again, I love Halo 3 so much, that I do not mind seeing it absolutely EVERYWHERE I TURN. It's beautiful. I'm sure Fontez doesn't either.
I'm with you guys, I love Halo from the bottom of my heart. I will be so overwhelmed when I get to the opening cutscene of the first level of Halo 3, I may end up blacking out.
You people can complain about it being too much hype all you want, but really, it's what all companies strive for, it's called 'marketing' and why the fuck you people don't understand that is beyond me. It's a successful product, instead of complaining maybe other companies should rethink their marketing strategies.
I see constant Wii adverts focusing on people waggling the controller rather then focusing on the game, but do I care? No.
I don't see how there can be "too many" advertisements. Especially if you're a fan of any video game. I'd much rather see a Halo commercial than....ohhh, any other commercial out there. And it's not like they're gonna get you back to your show any quicker. Moreover, I know people my age (22) who don't even know what Halo is. I have yet to see a Halo commercial on-air (december or now). I think I saw a small advertisement on the video games page of the Circuit/Best Buy circulars this week. How is this being blown out of proportion? It's no bigger than any marvel or harry potter movie release, which also have lots of advertisements, deals with fast food places for figurines, midnight releases, and people getting hyped up for it. While the new Harry Potter and Spiderman sucked, Halo will actually be worth it.
I just needed to tell someone that I pre purchased halo 3 and picked it up before noon today. I get home. put in the disc.... and i get the RED RING!!!!! I didnt even get to see a title menu dangit!! It was working perfectly fine yesterday and now i have to wait for 3-5 weeks to even SEE it.
