Making a surprise landing on Xbox.com's achievement tracking list is a brand new and totally unexpected
BioShock achievement. The achievement is the 51st listed, worth a whopping 100 Gamerscore and is one of those dirty "Secret" achievements, so nobody is quite sure what must be done to unlock it. Is it based on gameplay already available in
BioShock or is it a direct hint at other tasks that'll be available in some
yet to be released DLC? We're not sure, but we're crossing our fingers in hopes of some new DLC in the next few days to go along with our spiffy new achievement.
[Thanks, xenocidic]

if the DLC is just more plasmids or more weapons then count me out
jeff @ Nov 10th 2007 2:01PM
i had fun with this game about 3/4ths of the way through. then the game got old and boring; this game started out awesome then it turned to crap and a lot of backtracking near the end. halo 3 was worse though.
BluesmanTLU @ Nov 10th 2007 2:08PM
Yeah, as much as I enjoyed Bioshock, after about two playthroughs I really can't see revisiting it for quite a long time.
Unless there's an expansion or something. But I think they already said they wouldn't do that.
OBM @ Nov 10th 2007 2:28PM
If they added multiplayer some how (i know it's basically impossible) BUT if they did, I would kiss everyone on this website, no joke.
Helloimbob @ Nov 10th 2007 2:46PM
its a quarter not a 4th
mnemo @ Nov 10th 2007 2:47PM
I just found out what the achievement is. Ouch. Not easy. I'll verify if it's on the forums yet ...
mnemo @ Nov 10th 2007 2:51PM
Ok, here goes: BREAKING NEWS, everyone!
Translating back from German:
"Bullet proof. Complete the game on Hard difficulty without using a Vita-Chamber."
Good luck with that!
MDJ2010 @ Nov 10th 2007 2:55PM
Wow, that sucks, Ive never come across an achievement that I wouldn't have a go at. But that may just be the one. Although maybe the difficulty of that points to the introduction of some very powerful new plasmids
Anticrawl @ Nov 10th 2007 3:15PM
You must be Canadian Helloimbob. I've had many Canadians try to correct me on several different occasions that there is no such thing as a 4th and it's a quarter. They've even gone so far as to call me a moron for saying it, and not jokingly either. I guess this is some insight as to what kind of education the people to the north of us are receiving.
I wonder, do you people study fractions in Canada?
1/4th = 1 quarter for all you Canadians out there.
On topic: I got bored about 1/4th of the way through myself, when shooting a gun ceases to be fun then something went horribly wrong.
mnemo @ Nov 10th 2007 3:18PM
BTW, a title update for Bioshock is also available. You should update the post on that. Maybe it includes the widescreen fix?
negatendo @ Nov 10th 2007 3:19PM
I never used a VitaChamber. I just saved before each encounter. So, if that's the achievement then it's going to be pretty easy.
mnemo @ Nov 10th 2007 3:29PM
negatendo, if you have saves without using the chambers, complete the game NOW on hard again! And tell us your gamertag. :-)
Grant @ Nov 10th 2007 3:40PM
i would love to see someone from canada try to explain to someone who doesn't speak english natively why the faction 1/4 is a "quarter" but 1/3 is a "third". and every fraction from then on out just needs a "th" at the end.
gavilan @ Nov 10th 2007 3:53PM
I am going to pass the game on again on hard so yeah... ill give it another play through, will you guys post again when you find out what the achievement is?
mnemo @ Nov 10th 2007 3:58PM
gavilan, look at comment #7 - I revealed the achievement.
MDJ2010 @ Nov 10th 2007 4:06PM
I did the title update and didnt notice anything immediately different.
erivera3 @ Nov 10th 2007 4:11PM
Is XBOX LIVE down?!?! HELP!?
BoxNut @ Nov 10th 2007 5:21PM
@ Anticrawl:
F U C K Y O U !!!
You just reiterate the stereotype that Americans are assholes.
Joop @ Nov 10th 2007 5:44PM
That's not a very hard achievement to get. I saved often and always reloaded rather than respawned. Using only the wrench would be a decent achievement, though there are enough tonics to make it incredibly strong anyway.
Evan Walsh @ Nov 10th 2007 6:05PM
Sigh. You kids and your fighting.
1/4th of the time, you're wrong ;]

It can't be that,I finished the game in hard without using the Vita-chamber,in fact I never used the vita chamber in any difficulty I saved and loaded pretty much because I'm used to that stuff.
iFester @ Nov 10th 2007 6:35PM
Wait, to bring this to the highest level of geekdome, logic decree's that Star Trek writers are Canadian.
"Engines at one-quarter impulse." :D
Sara @ Nov 10th 2007 7:14PM
Is it really all that surprising that they're looking to come out with DLC. Really...Levine has stating such, several different times, in fact.
MDJ2010 @ Nov 10th 2007 7:22PM
Nope
CPT Stewart @ Nov 10th 2007 8:11PM
Didn't fear have an achievement that was "Beat the game without dying"? And if I believe that you could not just save/load when you died, you would actually have to pause the game and load it before you died or it would cancel out all progress towards that achievement meaning you'd have to start over.
I'm assuming, if that is in fact the achievement, that you would not just be able to reload an old save once you've been brought back to life by a vita-chamber, you would physically have to load your game before you could lose all of your health.
I was hoping for a "Beat the game using only the wrench and plasmids" achievement... only time will tell.
lylerk @ Nov 10th 2007 8:20PM
I know the achievement. Translated from Chinese "Beat the game on the hard difficulty while playing under the Southpaw controller layout with Maximum sensitivity and saving every seventh little sister while killing every Big Daddy using a different weapon without loading, saving or turning off your system, or eating."
Anticrawl @ Nov 10th 2007 8:43PM
@BoxNut
I'd rather be an asshole than an idiot.
nmmalone @ Nov 10th 2007 10:07PM
Woot
xenocidic @ Nov 11th 2007 12:15AM
I'm Canadian and I've heard it both as "one quarter" and "one fourth"...they're interchangable... why all the cross-border hatred over something as simple as the semantics of fractions?
Anyhow, as others have mentioned, saving and loading should make this achievement e-z moade.
ccc @ Nov 11th 2007 1:59AM
A multi player would be very possiable, but the download would have to be like 2 gig.
Helloimbob @ Nov 11th 2007 4:54AM
I'm from England. Not Canada.
Rk @ Nov 11th 2007 6:15AM
Yeah in ENGLISH (which coincidentally was developed naturally over time in England as a concoction of various languages), it is in fact a QUARTER. I don't know why 'American English' uses different terms and spellings from what is essentially its motherland, but it does. To me, 'fourth' sounds ridiculous - but I'm sure it's quite commonplace to some. It's like color [sic....to me].
ssuk @ Nov 11th 2007 8:11AM
Let's just settle on the fact that both "a 4th" and "a quater" are correct uses of 1/4.
Gonna go sign into XBL see if this update is up for us Eurofags yet.
Todd @ Nov 11th 2007 12:13PM
If that is the achievement it doesn't sound THAT bad. I never used a VitaChamber - just saved often.
You want a tough achievement - try carrying that dumb gnome through Episode 2 of Half Life 2.
Miguel @ Nov 11th 2007 12:57PM
negatendo: yeah..., right, even with the due goggles, knowing that eveeeery gamer, says every game is "soooo easy", I want to see you that on hard. Have you played on hard?
WelshBluebird @ Nov 11th 2007 1:28PM
I've just started playing through the game again on hard (in order to get the remaining achievements) so I'll try this one out.
Miguel @ Nov 11th 2007 2:13PM
Saving/Reloading, only gets you to a previous point in time (you and the enemies, with it's health as it was on save time, not on death time) so I can't figure out how this "saving/reloading" works as the magic tool to help on this. Sounds like a lot of boredom..., I hope that's not the Achievement.
Boff @ Nov 12th 2007 6:14AM
Fourths and quarters, it's all the same. I'm sure if everyone uses a bit of common sense we can all work out what it means in our native languages.
It's 1/2 that's the problem. One half? One Twoth? One Secondth? What about 1/22? What the hell is that? One Twenty Twoth? One Twenty Secondth?
Boff @ Nov 12th 2007 6:17AM
@36 WelshBlueBird: You a Cardiff supporter by any chance? If I was into football then it would have to be the Jacks for me!
xenocidic @ Nov 12th 2007 9:00AM
@miguel , it will just help with the unfair/unexpected deaths
Gemini Ace @ Nov 12th 2007 12:11PM
Will it make the game not suck? I doubt it.
Robert Aitchison @ Nov 12th 2007 12:13PM
If the achievement is really to beat the game on hard without dying (highly unlikely IMO) then count me out.
FTR I think the DLC will be more plasmids or maybe if we're lucky a new area of Rapture to explore.

Or maybe a "flashback" where you play as a young/rapidly growing Jack running around a just starting to descend into anarchy Rapture interacting with Suchong & McDonagh & others.
abetterwordfordead @ Nov 15th 2007 4:34AM
like Negatendo, I played my first time through without using a vitachamber, I was actually never aware that you didn't lose progress until well into the game... unfortunately this was on medium diff, I used a few Vitachambers on hard but only because I didn't care about dying so much as completing the game
Ryan @ Nov 28th 2007 1:04AM
I just completed the game on hard without dying a single time. I didn't unlock the extra achievement. Check my gamerscore whitelightnin92.
djbubblez @ Jan 18th 2008 11:46AM
4 real im half way through, what shuld i do
Evilperson @ Feb 3rd 2008 11:41AM
Yeah same here, completed it without using any vita chambers and that last achievement still isnt unlocked. Anyone know anything about if the game can tell if you died and then loaded an earlier save point?
*****very slight possible spoiler**********
or another possibility if you let the little sister die at the proving grounds and then get another one, if that counts as a death? i have a save point right before she died I can try and see later but this is annoying. i dont feel like playin through the whole game again XD
Ryan @ Feb 3rd 2008 2:33PM
You don't have to make it the whole time without losing a little sister. I thought the same thing too. The only reason I can think of that whould prevent you from unlocking the last achievement is if you didn't download the update. I beat if before I downloaded the update without dying and nothing happened. After I downloaded the update (through xbox live, which also includes new plasmids) I went back and beat the fnial guy again and it unlocked the achievement.
mnemo @ Nov 30th 2007 7:28PM
2K has now announced DLC for next week, including an option to "disable all Vita-Chambers for hardcore play". Hmmmmm. ;-)

Bioshock freakin rocks, i just wish the endings would have been longer.Im half way through on hard with vita chambers off, its got some rough spots but uts do able
