360 sales reach 17.7 million, Halo 3 surges to 8.1

Microsoft revealed that to date, the Xbox 360 has sold a solid 17.7 million consoles worldwide and it's rumored that December's numbers will eclipse November's sales reaching the 1 million unit mark. But that isn't all. Microsoft also gloated that Mass Effect has now sold 1.6 million copies since its November 20th release and Master Chief's Halo 3 has moved an astonishing 8.1 million copies since September. 8.1 million copies! That means nearly half of ALL Xbox 360 owners have purchased Halo 3. Simply amazing. Now we'll go back to patiently waiting for December's NPD to release. Until then, we'll be eating some peaches and cream in the break room. Holler if you need us.

Sadly it's more like 10 million actual units sold as the other 7 million are people who's 360s had RRODed so they had to get a new one. It's not a flame bait.

Well, I've bought consoles during RROD down time before. Most of my friends have too... so I'm sure we aren't the only ones.
Something that's not related at all: Look at the guy's face in the pic above, the one all the way to the right! That's hilarious... is he going to take a bite out of Halo?
JakubK666 @ Jan 4th 2008 11:47AM
Reminds me of that Nintendo 64 kid that's all over youtube :)
Fafhrdd @ Jan 4th 2008 11:55AM
No it's 17 million units sold period. Just because someone bought a new console when theirs was RROD does not mean anything but how awesome a system is (instead of buying a PS3 when their 360 failed they bought another 360). I have 3-xbox 360's and none have failed. It does not mean these number should reflect that it should be 10 million because some people have more. It reflects 17 million units have bene sold via retail.

A sale is a sale. Do you honestly think the PS2's massive sales were one-per-household?
Microsoft don't release these stats to brag, they release them to reassure stock holders. They like to know Microsoft (and the Xbox division) are making money.
Van Faulk @ Jan 4th 2008 11:56AM
I knew Halo 3was selling well...but not that well. It's now sold what Halo 2 has sold.
Tony @ Jan 4th 2008 12:32PM
Yeah, to echo Sean, I know quite a few people who have replaced any system... and while RROD was certainly widespread, it's pretty clear the PS2's early laser issues were as well. Hell, they even got sued over that, supposedly.
Honestly, I think most people are simply willing to wait a while and get their system repaired. I find it hard to believe that the average RROD owner instantly runs out and buys another $300+ system the second it breaks. They call places, they turn in warranty plans, etc.
Larry *not allowed to say cheevo* @ Jan 4th 2008 12:52PM
Yeah, these all count as sales... whether the system was ultimately returned or not. I've gone through 2 RRODs on my premium and 1 on my Elite. Each time I've bought a replacement (target has a wonderful return policy) because I couldn't go a whole 4-6 weeks without being able to play 360.
I have 3 friends that have gone out and bought replacements after RROD tragedy struck. This is in no way the average user. We are all adults with jobs, no kids, etc. The only roadblock might be the significant other rolling their eyes at you and calling you impatient.
Tony @ Jan 4th 2008 1:14PM
Well, I mean, I can't really speak of the older "hardcore" audience that can do these things... but I know arguably more people now with a 360 who simply cannot do these things (including me), all of which have had the RROD at one time another.
I suppose my point is mostly that I don't think that people who do that are really in the majority... but I guess all any of us can do is speculate based upon our own experience lol. That's all I'm doing anyway :)
Derek @ Jan 4th 2008 1:31PM
thats pretty amazing! I never though their numbers would reach that high. FYI if you want to have you 360 last longer buy a fan. The thremal auto on fans are the best.
Rk @ Jan 4th 2008 2:16PM
Only HALF of all 360 owners?
Grant @ Jan 4th 2008 2:50PM
The other half plays Gears of War or COD4
CheapStereo @ Jan 4th 2008 6:01PM
Behold the power of marketing. The game was garbage but for some reason I have two copies...
tommy @ Jan 5th 2008 9:47PM
halo 3... garbage... you must be kidding.
Erlend @ Jan 4th 2008 6:13PM
The guy at the right is really looking cool. Yeah, 360 owns - so does the playaz.
dantemustdie @ Jan 4th 2008 7:34PM
I think Kotaku said it best when they made a post on this story and mentioned that 17.7 is their units shipped, not units sold (probably, at least).
