Rumor: GoldenEye, more Rare games coming to XBLA

Since the early days of Xbox Live Arcade, gamers everywhere have been dreaming of the games they'd love to see on the service. While some wishes have come to pass, other remain rumors. This one comes to us from Xbox Evolved and it concerns none other than the Nintendo 64 darling from Rare, GoldenEye. Heralded by many as one of the best FPS games to grace a console -- and certainly one of the first games to prove an FPS could be done well on a console -- GoldenEye could be on its merry way to Xbox Live Arcade sometime soon. Apparently a deal has been reached between Rare, Activision, who owns the game rights to James Bond, and MGM Studios, who owns the film rights to James Bond. Supposedly the game should release shortly before the upcoming Activision published James Bond title rumored to be under development at Bizarre.
But wait, there's more! Xbox Evolved is also reporting that Rare is planning on releasing more of its back catalog on XBLA including the original Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie. And before you ask, no, Killer Instinct isn't mentioned.

Doesn't Nintendo own the rights to the game?
pandlcg @ Jan 9th 2008 1:51PM
i believe Rare and Activision hold different licenses over it. Rare, who MS owns, because they developed it in the first place. And Activision because they have exclusive rights to any new Bond releases.
mattclarkie @ Jan 9th 2008 2:01PM
It would explain why Nintendo haven't released it on Wii Virtual Console. With it being one of the few N64 FPS games that would sell very well, wouldn't you expect Nintendo to rush to release it.
mike @ Jan 9th 2008 4:02PM
it will never release on virtual console because Rare owns the game. There are 2 people who own this game, Rare and Activision (because they currently hold the license). Only those 2 working together can decide where this game is released. And forunetly for us, RARE is owned by microsoft, so the only place it could be released is for xbox.

Banjo Kazooie + Achievements = Awesome
flameofdoom666 @ Jan 9th 2008 4:29PM
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (this is what comes to mind).
Get 100 notes in mumbo's mountain (or any other level): 10 achievement points!
Get 5 jinjo's in Mumbo's Mountain (or any other level): 5 achievement points!
Get 10 puzzle peices in Mumbo's Mountain (or any other level): 15 achievement points!
I would buy this game in a heartbeat!

Oh, hell yes! w00t, w00t on this one! I'll be Oddjob, since he's hard to hit.
xenocidic @ Jan 9th 2008 2:09PM
lol the race for oddjob when choosing characters. and to a lesser extend, the 2nd last character because she was slightly shorter too.
James @ Jan 9th 2008 1:49PM
Man, that would be a real stick in the eye of the Virtual Console -- an N64 game on a MS console. Good thing I own both of them ;-)
pandlcg @ Jan 9th 2008 1:49PM
It would be cool if they would update the controls so you could use duel analog sticks. I wouldn't want to move around with one stick and look up and down with the d-pad or abxy buttons.
Gemini Ace @ Jan 9th 2008 1:51PM
I've been asking for this since day one. Glad to see it might happen. I really hope it has online multiplayer.
Arno @ Jan 9th 2008 1:53PM
Should be awesome, one of the best games ever.
Tony @ Jan 9th 2008 1:55PM
Nintendo supposedly gave up a lot of these rights when Rare was acquired. And if that's true all they really retained were items related to established Nintendo properties, meaning we're not going to see Diddy Kong or Krystal any time soon. Unfortunately, Nintendo, Rare and MS have not been very forthcoming with who exactly owns what and in what senses to my knowledge.

The Wii's doesn't have enough processing power to handle a game like GoldenEye. Heh heh. Only joking.

Cass-D @ Jan 9th 2008 2:13PM
This is great. I have fond memories of this game. Shoot I still own the damn thing but my 64 acts up so I don't play it anymore. Would be nice as a VC on Wii. But if this is XBLA hell yes I will get this.
iFester @ Jan 9th 2008 2:17PM
According to this article it's been blocked by Nintendo.

Since this is all just speculation currently I don't know what to believe. Still, there's more of an audiance for this title given hard core gamers own 360's, I think it would make more money for Activision and MGM if it were on XBLA.
Time will tell.
Tony @ Jan 9th 2008 2:27PM
I had read about that at GoNintendo and apparently this 'new rumor' overrides that
So who knows at this point.
DemonGSides @ Jan 9th 2008 2:18PM
Next? Duke 3D right before Forever is released.
Dear god, think of the consequences...

FUCK!!!!! Why not?!!!!
Eddie @ Jan 9th 2008 2:28PM
I don't know about anyone else, but I loved the 64 for the 4 player FPS's and that made the jump to the 360 that much more natural (I know I'm skipping a couple of generations). This would be a perfect fit for XBLA, but knowing Ninty, they're gonna find a way to stop this from happening (if I can't have it, no one will). Damnit Bill Gates, just buy Nintendo already! You have more than enough time on your hands, now! Putting Sony out of business would only be the icing on the cake.

Kool deal. The Arcade is booming these days.

I wish they could bring KI Arcade to XBLA and include the Nintendo Ultra 64 logo i used to get excited when I saw that
ILuVmyRedLighted360 @ Jan 9th 2008 3:04PM
I actually would be really surprised to see this happen although it would be awesome. The reason why is that when Rare (people that made the game) went to MS (people that currently own Rare) from Nintendo (had Goldeneye come out for their system) it probably wasn't ever mentioned on how downloadable distributution of the game would work for the three parties involved and who had the rights seeing as it nobody had thought of it at the time. But it would be awesome if it did come out.
Just for the record, if this game had online I'd totally be Jaws, even though his height gives him a huge disadvantage it'd be awesome when you "get all up in your opponents face" and they have to see the pixalated grills of Jaws smiling at them. That'd be awesome.
NitroFrost @ Jan 9th 2008 3:26PM
I love tipping X3F off on these things. specially when I get no credit. I heart you X3F really I do. lol
Richard Mitchell @ Jan 9th 2008 3:42PM
If there's a tip from you, I don't see it. Beside that, we find our stories all over the place. If you tipped us but didn't get credit, it's not personal.
NitroFrost @ Jan 9th 2008 4:31PM
I was just joking around I am not. Look at your Xboxlive inbox there should be a message there. I sent it to you and Dustin. I was just joking around I am just glad that stories that I do tip get inthere with or with out credit. I just care about the fanboys knowing. I didn't take it personal Now if you were Knuckles then this would be a different story LOL jkjk
Magic Whiskey @ Jan 9th 2008 3:41PM
Wii60 guy here, and I gotta say if GoldenEye really does hit XBLA....wow. Castlevania SOTN, REZ and then this- those three games alone in one spot would make XBLA the best home gaming console since I first opened up my 2600 in the 80's!
Keith @ Jan 9th 2008 4:01PM
killer instinct gold
FTW!!!!
DO IT!
been waiting 15 years.
Eklen @ Jan 9th 2008 4:31PM
That would be the most amazing xbox game ever. Yes, ever, exceeding your mass effects, halos, call of dutys, and creeds of assassins
Ryan @ Jan 9th 2008 4:38PM
I've got to think Goldeneye with online multiplayer would immediately become one of the best (if not THE best) XBLA games.
If this happens, I really hope there's an achievement for beating Facility on 00 in 2:05 ;)
Peff @ Jan 9th 2008 5:41PM
when i saw that picture. i came in my pants
Ryan @ Jan 9th 2008 9:59PM
I did too. I suggest getting a rag ready if/when it gets confirmed.
Peff @ Jan 10th 2008 7:24AM
haha, ill try to remember that. but i dont think a rag will be enough if this gets confirmed. haha
jose_edwaldo @ Jan 9th 2008 7:26PM
YES!! Just as long as we get Blast Corps as well.....

*head assplodes*
NvM @ Jan 9th 2008 10:22PM
As much as I love Ninty and their VC.
I'd rather Microsoft just have Goldeneye, it would be so awesome....
Shawn S. @ Jan 10th 2008 3:45PM
It's a wonderful idea to dismantle old games, and improve them with innovative and new-wave technology on new systems. However, look at what happened when N64 tried to redo Donkey Kong Country: Mario World 64, replaced with the Donkey Kong Crew...terrible.
Goldeneye for 360 would be outstanding.
Although, I've been thinking: Why not redo the SNES version of Donkey Kong Country--same levels, boses and achievements, but much harder and from the point-of-view of Donkey Kong, rather than side-screen scroll.
A little far fetched.
Take Care,
S.
Chris @ Jan 11th 2008 7:00AM
If goldeneye comes out on the 360 it would be a bigger release than GTA 4. Bye bye PS3 you may have won over the world with blue ray (the only excuse for buying a PS3) but you have lost the console gaming war.
Come on goldeneye !!
