NPD: 360 sells 1.26 million and H3 is king of '07
We can finally put the guessing and speculation to rest, because the US's December NPD video game sales are here! Let's jump in head first without a helmet. The Xbox 360 sold 1.26 million consoles (wowzaz!) in December, barely trailing the Wii's 1.35 million, but completely dominating the PS3's 797.6K. But that isn't all friends, because the December NPD brings the added benefit of recapping what 2007's total sales were as well. And in 2007, the Xbox 360 made us proud selling 4.62 million consoles, with the Wii selling 6.29 million and the PS3 only managing to move 2.56 million. It should also be noted that the 360 leads in lifetime sales with 9.15 million units. Just saying.
Onto the software side of things, last December Call of Duty 4 on the 360 took the number one spot with 1.47 million copies, while Assassin's fell into number five (893.7K), Halo 3 at number six (742.7K) and GHIII at number nine (624.6K). Sorry kids, no Rock Band. And we're very proud to say that Halo 3 is the number one selling game of all platforms in 2007, moving a respectable 4.82 million copies, just edging out Wii Play's 4.12 million.
Our heads hurt, so feel free to click towards the break and look over the complete listings of December and 2007's hardware and software sales in list form. Remember, numbers are fun!

I love my xbox 360, but my 6th xbox 360 just died because of E47 error, 1 red ring of death, which is not covered under warranty. 3 of them have died because of bad drives. 4th and 5th because of RROD. This is since the console has been out for 2 years.
ExMcloud @ Jan 28th 2008 3:07PM
Yeah the PS3 probably outsold the 360 world wide...But that doesnt mean spit over here...Their numbers here are abysmal at best and those software numbers are very concerning...PS3 owners don't buy games...And without Madden and GTA carrying them they're gonna have a hardtime winning the console war in america
George Arauz @ Jan 28th 2008 6:06PM
I love it when Sony talks junk when they are beat bad
mike k. @ Jan 18th 2008 9:21AM
wii play probably shouldn't even count, because most everyone buys it just for the extra controller.
Chuckles @ Jan 18th 2008 9:26AM
All in all a very good year for the 360. I still can't believe that people are still buying PS2's, but I'm sure lots of younger kids don't care about high definition graphics or online play.
TORO @ Jan 18th 2008 9:37AM
Annnd, PS3 doesn't even show up on December or 2007 software sales, just saying ;)
DjDATZ @ Jan 18th 2008 9:49AM
LOL...so true. what does that say? LOL
Simon @ Jan 18th 2008 10:25AM
Yeah, that is very concerning. I say that, because I own a PS3. Mind you, since I bought my 360 in September '07, I have bought all multi-platform games for it, and not the PS3.
Also, wow to CoD4! No wonder the matchmaking was messed up and all those connection errors. The servers must have been melting?!
Delgado @ Jan 18th 2008 2:03PM
@Simon
It was actually messed up because of the general Xbox Live problems. But man, was it bad >
Doc @ Jan 18th 2008 9:40AM
Although its hard to sell a $170 game( I'm looking at you rock band), I do wonder how many units would have sold if they could have mantained a health stock in stores? Congrats 360 on the good year, now how about getting that consoles lifespan increased..so I can keep playing all these wonderful games!
Knight Marquise @ Jan 18th 2008 10:09AM
Doc,
I bought Rock Band early (at launch) instead of waiting for Christmas because of fear of this supposed shortage to come. We have had stacks of Rock Band, in the stores, from as far back as launch. The store types I'm referring too are Gamestop, Fred Meyers, Best Buy, Shopco's, Target.
Dragod @ Jan 18th 2008 11:53PM
Meh... I played the Rock Band demo at Best Buy 3 or 4 times... I really don't like it. The timing is weird, the screen is so dark, and the bars instead of buttons are harder to differentiate between at higher speeds, I don't like the HUD much, and the "save a bandmate" or whatever is kind of a gimmicky... I wish Harmonix had just stayed with Guitar Hero and brought the drums to it... Though I do love the fact that they provide content weekly, I just don't like the game itself. I honestly don't know why it gets such good reviews, but I dislike it so much...
DjDATZ @ Jan 18th 2008 9:47AM
wow...i'm a n00b. maybe I should check the site before sending in a tip...LOL
Doc @ Jan 18th 2008 10:13AM
Knight, I wish I lived where you do. I had a hard time getting my hands on the game since like the Wii, it was hard to get since when they arrive they go quick. I love the game though, I just wish that more of my friends could have found it too..
DSR7997 @ Jan 18th 2008 10:19AM
Now comes the "Playstation brand had nearly 3 million in hardware sales" spin.
Flash2000 @ Jan 18th 2008 10:42AM
Well, we should enjoy the dominance while we can. I love my 360 and I've been a Microsoft supporter since 1990. I also swore that after having two PS2's die on me because of laser issues I would never buy another Sony console ever again.
But... I also love HD movies, and the PS3 is the cheapest and fastest Blu-Ray player on the market right now. I will be buying one in the very near future. We'll also see how PS3's exclusive games shape up against 360's this year. Remember, we don't have a Halo or a Call of Duty coming this year.
Plus with the debacle of the XBL servers being down so long, and now we're being told we can't even get updates to that... there are going to be a lot of frustrated online gamers jumping ship from the paid service of XBL to the free service of PSN.
Just sayin'
j @ Jan 18th 2008 11:09AM
Go back to your PS3 fanboy page leech

im just sayin for you to say what needs to be said
crazylegs @ Jan 18th 2008 11:36AM
Awesome...Awesome to the max. Lets see how the PS3 fanboys spin this one.....
chris link @ Jan 18th 2008 11:54AM
i think these are just figures for the US, because i'm pretty sure the wii surpassed the 360 in overall sales in september. only 7.38 million wii units sold? seems small. wikipedia reports over 13.17 million units shipped as of september 07. i know the 360 gained a nice sales boost because of halo 3, but i doubt it was enough to catch up to the nintendo juggernaut.
just something that caught my eye.
eugene @ Jan 18th 2008 12:19PM
Well, I'm sure when sony releases their OFFICIAL 2007 numbers, they will clearly show that PS3 beat the 360 in total sales. What's the official 2007 numbers you ask? Why, from December 2006 - December 2007, of course. What's that you say? No one else thinks a year has 13 months? Well, if December 2007 can have 5 weeks, surely 2007 could have had 13 months.
Jason @ Jan 18th 2008 12:37PM
So Halo 3, in just more than 3 months, sold more units than the tally of 360's for the entire year. Just amazing.
George Arauz @ Jan 18th 2008 2:14PM
Thats what i like to hear. PS2.5 sux
tboy @ Jan 18th 2008 5:16PM
Well, to bad M$ is to stupid to figure out how to get a simple internet page loading on a system. So they decide to be dumb enough to throw in a free crappy arcade game that noone can download (because Live is dead). Also, lets watch the new 360s start to die with RRoD problems! That will be FUN!
YAY 08, GREAT year for M$ to back all of their "extended" warrenties!
Trekster_Gamer @ Jan 18th 2008 6:29PM
Live is not dead, I had probs signing in when they was getting overloaded and it was due to too many NEW USERS. I have no issues now, and gee I am sure the PS3 would not have that problem as there was not nearly as many new users now was there...
The Newer 360's don't have a heat problem. What about the 40 gig Ps3 crowd??? it's a shame Sony screwed you as far as playing PS2 titles go doesn't it?? Maybe thats why the Ps2 is selling as the Ps3 is all talk and nothing to back up what it can do....
PS3 overrated, overpriced XBOX 360 dominates!!!
Now if I want old looking games I will go with the Wii :)
eugene @ Jan 18th 2008 7:44PM
Wow, lets say you're right and the 360s are hardware bombs and Live won't let anyone on... so how badly does the PS3 suck then that with all those problems, the 360 outsold the PS3 nearly 2 to 1?
Apparantly, people would rather deal with laggy match making in COD4 on Live, then having no one to make a match with on PSN.
RROD @ Jan 19th 2008 11:47AM
I am so sorry that xbox seems to be doing well in America. And in the rest of the world, the PS3 has been outselling M$'s PoS system for months now. The rest of the world gets the memo, but America can not just grasp it. And it did not sell out 2:1. r u that stupid? And xbox has had not nearly enough bad publicity. RRod? Bad publicity? OK when a system has 50% fail rate, it deserves bad publicity. because its true. PS3 just got bad publicity because idiots like you cant get lives, so you decide to bash a perfectly fine system. And also, if you pay for an online service, shouldn't it always work? Even if there is new users? M$ is just a piece of crap.
RROD @ Jan 19th 2008 11:49AM
also, I played COD 4 on ps3 (and xbox), Warhawk, and RFOM, and there was absolutely NO lag. Infact COD for xbox seemed to take longer to find games. So do not bash the PSN just because it offers the same in game quality as the overpriced XBL.
eugene @ Jan 20th 2008 3:09AM
apparantly PS3 fanboy's can't read. Look up the definition of 'nearly'.
RRoD @ Jan 21st 2008 6:01PM
I toook your advice, i looked up nearly. Here is what came up:
Nealry 50% of Xbox 360s fail with RRoD
Nearly 75% of people on XBL right now are immature 12 year olds
or
HD-DVD is Nearly dead
Tell me if I am still not getting it.
Knight Marquise @ Jan 21st 2008 6:48PM
@ "RRoD"
Wow, we're just a busy little troll today aren't we?
When you have to channel figures out of your ass and attempt to pass them off as fact, I'd have to say, "No". You're still not getting it.
Try. Again.
David Goltry @ Jan 19th 2008 1:11AM
I agree Eugene. The 360 had nothing but bad press all year it seemed with the RROD and other failures, problems with Live, HD DVD on it's death bed. Yet, at the end of the day, people are choosing IT over the PS3. Devasting news for Sony.
HB96st @ Jan 19th 2008 11:10AM
Well, Props to 360 Fanboy for telling THE WHOLE TRUTH unlike PS3 Fanboy who tries to put a spin on things and not mentioning other console sales... Weak, SDF... Real weak. Just go thru the PS3 FB site.. they are so one sided over there, its sick! I don't care if Blu Ray wins, Don't support the PS3!!
HB96st @ Jan 19th 2008 11:12AM
Die PS3.
Johnnyboy @ Jan 19th 2008 4:17PM
That is the same thing as saying
"Die Quality"
lmao
HB96st @ Jan 19th 2008 6:29PM
lmao!!
-no.
it isn't.
