Video: Expert 'Next to You' Rock Band drumming
Whenever we spot a video that showcases superior gaming skills we go through a predictable set of emotions. We begin our video watching by being very skeptical and unimpressed. Then, we slowly begin quirking our heads with interest. Third, our eyes get big, our jaw drops to the floor and we're simply amazed at the spectacle. We then watch the video again in its entirety in total disbelief. Finally, we walk away angry, full of angst and jealousy. And that's the exact set of emotions we went through after watching the video above.
Behold GurnKiller's expert Rock Band drumming to The Police's "Next to You". It's five gold starred, 100% perfect (though, he does hit a few extra notes that mess up the multiplier) and is 100% amazing. It also makes us feel so inferior.

Not a full combo? noobish!
Matt @ Jan 22nd 2008 3:37PM
I enjoy these more when I can actually see the drummer at work. Pretty amazing though.

Ditto, this guy is pretty good and his actual videos are put together very well.

Yep, that's exactly who I was thinking of. I remember one of his first videos posted was ...And Justice for All on Expert.

Those are great videos indeed, dumb question though; what's wrapped around the drums?
I did notice that he seems to be from the leg-lift school of playing the bass drum though, that has to get exhausting.
xenocidic @ Jan 22nd 2008 4:33PM
bmac, read the "about this video" part to learn why there is masking tape over the "left-most" drum.

This is me playing in this video. The video was captured with a Gamebridge. My friends and I are looking into ways to do videos like deepbluevibes (who has a lot of experience with creating/editing videos). Hopefully we can get that up and running soon and I'll post some vide on youtbue similar to the way dbv does.

And apparently I don't know how to spell...
*youtube
and to Brian Arnold:
Yes, that's true, however there are some songs (notably this one, Dead On Arrival, Blood Doll, and a few others) where you basically have to FC/100% it to get gold.
Mike Jenkins @ Jan 22nd 2008 3:45PM
How did he get his drum icon like that? And is gold star achieved at a certain score or at 100%, because it looked like it hit at 160,000 but the audio was a little out of sync.
Brian Arnold @ Jan 22nd 2008 4:07PM
Your icon changes when your character has finished the endless setlist in band world tour, which pops up after you get into the hall of fame. Different difficulties make it different colors, although I forget which goes to which.
Also, the stars go gold at a particular point threshold, not 100%. So, you can get 5 gold stars without 100%, as I've done it multiple times. :)

I was wondering about that ... that's good to know, although I wonder if I'll ever see that on drums myself. Right now, Hard is, well, hard.
James @ Jan 22nd 2008 3:49PM
Agreed... It's better when you can see the player in action. Good score overall, but the fills were poopoo.
Mike @ Jan 22nd 2008 3:50PM
There are examples like this all over youtube. This one I think is better:

Harder song, and you can see the drummer doing his thing.
Brian @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:41PM
Mike,
That video you linked to is the same guy. He is definitely awesome.
Jim Halpert DM @ Jan 22nd 2008 4:16PM
Exhausting...look at all that bass pedal.
BlackBeltJones @ Jan 22nd 2008 4:28PM
I thought I was getting decent on drums but then I stepped up to hard and realized I had a ways to go.
Xanto @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:24PM
Same with me, I still have loads of trouble when the bass and regular notes are on uneven beats.
InvisiMan @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:56PM
Not bad, but the horrible fills show us how amateur the drummer really is.
I must say though, Guitar Hero on expert looks much harder than Rock Band drums on expert... maybe if I wasn't a real drummer, I'd see it a bit different...
GurnKiller @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:27PM
Whoa... amateur drummer because of my fills? I was going for score in this one and didn't want to risk breaking my combo to "sound cool". Fyi, I've been playing drums for 12 years, have a college degree in music performance (percussion). Sorry if my fills weren't "cool" enough for you. I'll try harder to please you next time.
GurnKiller @ Jan 23rd 2008 12:38AM
Wait... which part makes me a fag? That I'm better than you at drums in real life or that I'm better than you at drums in a video game? Please clarify.
xenocidic @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:51AM
don't feed the trolls mang !
Loban @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:16AM
I could never do this on my system as my stupid receiver introduces about a 5 to 10 ms audio delay which makes drumming very difficult. I've actually gotten used to it so if I concentrate I do just fine, but if I slack off and get off the beat even slightly, I am guaranteed to miss the note.
