Valve confirms more Portal to come

It's a good thing too, because most of you would like to see more Portal. Speaking to Eurogamer, Valve spokesperson Doug Lombardi confirmed that there will be more Portal and, furthermore, it won't simply be "a bunch of new puzzles." When exactly we'll see the next installment of Portal remains a mystery. Also a mystery is exactly what form it will take. At this point, it's unclear if Valve intends to create a full blown sequel or if the company plans to stick to an episodic format in the vein of Half-Life 2. Speaking of Half-Life 2, Lombardi notes that Episode 3 details are still a long way away -- "months not weeks," according to Lombardi. Lombardi also reasserts that Valve wants additional content for its games to be free. That's a good to hear with new Team Fortress 2 content in the pipeline.
Now that we know there will be more Portal, allow us to create a subtitle for the sequel: The Quest for Cake. What would you call it?

It is going to be tough to follow it up and have it be as good. Will they just make you another person trapped in there? Maybe a prequel where you can go around leaving messages for Chell? If they tie it in well, they could have it occur when Aperture Science goes down and have you start by watching that Powerpoint presentation while prepping your resume to try and get in at Black Mesa.
xenocidic @ Jan 31st 2008 4:45PM
i agree, it's going to be tough to follow, but i'm sure they will pull it off.
i can't wait!

I'd love to play Portal in a "real world" environment rather than the test lab. When you broke out of lab tests and into the facility during Portal that was incredible.
Tegolin @ Jan 31st 2008 4:56PM
AWESOME!
Multiplayer can be called "Capture the Cake"

Maybe Valve will release another "Box" in '08, one that contains more Portal stuff, HL2: Episode 3 and er... other stuff?
Scott Ores @ Jan 31st 2008 9:24PM
I hope it's after the aperature test lab and you wake up and your outside and look around to see no civilization whatsoever then you have to find out what happened to it....

Portal was the best game I had played in a long while, it was easily my game of the year.
That being said, I'm disappointed in this announcement. I do not want a sequel. I'm more interested in what other marriage of brilliant story-telling and innovative gameplay the Portal team can cook up. Portal was a perfect package (not a perfect game, mind you), the last thing anyone needs is it to all become unraveled and mediocre.
Portal 2 is to Portal, as Chrono Cross is to Chrono Trigger. Excellent game, yet completely unnecessary - actually disservices the original.
-----
DO bring on the merger of Aperture Science technology and Half-Life universe, please.
Twp3pf2 @ Feb 1st 2008 10:35AM
I wouldn't call it "Portal" anything; Valve wants a reputation for originality and branching out, despite the obvious goal of making money. Don't curse the new game with a title like "Portal II" then.
I liked the way the movies The Fugitive and US Marshalls had different titles, letting you know from the beginning that they were two different movies that just shared characters.
The sequel could be called anything using Aperture Science, GLaDOS, etc. to evoke the first game without jinxing it by flatly calling it a sequel. From a marketing standpoint, it makes more sense, too: it's not like anyone is going to be confused as to what game is being continued.
Fafhrdd @ Feb 1st 2008 11:38AM
SWEET! This is a great day to be alive :) MORE PORTAL!!!!!
