With Xbox 360 controller and
speech recognition kit in hand, the guys over at
AcidMods went out and
modded their own voice recognition 360 controller. For real. The entire controller assembly wouldn't win any beauty pageants, but the voice recognition (surprisingly) works rather well. Just check out the demo video we've embedded after the break for proof's sake. Though, we're not sure how useful a bulky mod like this would be in the real gaming world (not to mention the mod's cost), but it's interesting nonetheless and packs a lot of potential. Now follow along ... reload, jump, switch, reload and jump. Good!

I look at something like this as a great benefit to people who have lost the use of an arm or hand in still being able to play console games. They have those one handed controllers that go some of the way, but this could give a whole new range of function.
there's a lot of Young amputees coming out of Iraq right now, and anything that lets them engage in the joy of gaming is cool with me.
Raheem @ Feb 1st 2008 4:16PM
You make a good point. There are a lot of dead children in Iraq thanks to those amputees too.
Damn Lucky @ Feb 3rd 2008 10:05AM
Raheem, more civilians and children die from the terrorist IED's then American "friendly fire". I'm not saying that it isn't a sad truth, and oh how I wish they could find a peaceful end to this conflict.
But don't demonize the men and women serving over seas. I have friends and family serving in the Canadian armed forces in Afghanistan, and I bet many Americans here know ones in Iraq too. I can not speak for the others, but know that people do not take kindly to what you are implying with your comment.
TORO @ Feb 1st 2008 4:17PM
I don't think jumping, switching, and meleeing will finish the fight.
Scott @ Feb 1st 2008 4:27PM
I think its fine, thats how I play. I just hop around in place waiting for someone to step in front of me then i melee. But i push the button really slowly so it takes awhile after i think I should melee before it actually does. This thing would be MONEY for me!
horngreen @ Feb 1st 2008 8:09PM
LMAO
SoxFan13 @ Feb 1st 2008 4:26PM
Raheem-
I don't want to start a flamewar here, but he didn't say the amputees were American. Maybe he wants injured Iraqis to be able to play?
To the issue, if we thought people on live were annoying now, what if all we heard was "jump, jump, melee, shoot, switch, grenade..." That would be horrible!
TheBlahMasta @ Feb 1st 2008 4:36PM
I don't think you would hear them say that, unless they were stupid enough to put two headsets on.
Michael Paul @ Feb 1st 2008 4:35PM
Finally, a way to get realism into that Judge Dredd game I always wanted. "Double Whammy..."
A-Train @ Feb 1st 2008 5:10PM
Eat shit Raheem, those kids are dead because of President Bush, not the amputees.
Raheem @ Feb 1st 2008 6:45PM
Eat shit? Clever. Pass the buck.
Brucie B @ Feb 1st 2008 5:45PM
Jump... Melee... Switch... Jump... Switch... Melee... Switch... Melee... Jump...
Cool Nontheless
Robo @ Feb 1st 2008 6:01PM
Of course, because simply commenting on how amputees could use this is suddenly a political bitch fest. It's completely unrelated.
You make me sick. It's perfectly logical and reasonable to think of how useful this would be for amputee victims, whether they were incapacitated by an accident or war.
People trying to make everything political shouldn't be commenting on message boards or blogs.
Raheem @ Feb 1st 2008 6:44PM
Idiot. View my comment history before you say things like , "always make things political." Someone mentions one outcome of the war, I'll mention another. It's the censors like you who should be banned from blogs and forums.
butters @ Feb 1st 2008 6:11PM
Well if you have Turretts and your ticks involve the controls for halo 3 then you in luck
alixandermcfly @ Feb 2nd 2008 5:56AM
Turretts?? Like gun emplacements?? Oooohhhh You mean tourettes. Not like gun emplacements!!

Please don't get pissy, Butters. Just breaking your balls. Hahahahahaha
Raheem @ Feb 1st 2008 6:41PM
Get over yourselves. Start bringing up the war and you're gonna get called on it. You are the sick ones. Kill some kids then come back and play some games? Blame whoever you like, Bush didn't pull a trigger. Rate me down I'm sure, nobody could ever criticize the hegemon. Blasphemy in the name of Yahweh!!!
anthonyjh @ Feb 1st 2008 7:51PM
Your foolish. I implore you to spout your mindlessness at every turn, so people will realize the true depth of your retardation. Your a child without the slightest clue as to the going ons of the world. I hate war in every shape and color, and you make the anti-war movement look insane with your drivel. Though, that may have been your original intent, no?
Raheem @ Feb 2nd 2008 2:07PM
Lmao you fool I was being sarcastic with that last part. Oh and since I'm the foolish one, how come I know when to use you're and not your? Learn English before you contribute.
Prophestus @ Feb 1st 2008 6:53PM
Dear Raheem,
GTFO. Spit your pointless drivel elswhere. A gaming blog isn't really the place for your mindless b/s
Raheem @ Feb 2nd 2008 2:11PM
Great point. What's mindless about it?
horngreen @ Feb 1st 2008 8:09PM
When will people learn to just ignore the post they hate. If everyone did that they might just go away...FUCK BUSH! LOL
Robo @ Feb 2nd 2008 12:15AM
Just because this technology presents one possible use doesn't mean it's an invitation to begin a rant on personal philosophy. No one really cares what you think on a non-gaming related subject. The assertion you try to present doesn't even come across as relevant to this discussion.
This Demo shows the possibilities of Voice technology for gaming in the near future, and how it not only could make gaming new and exciting, but also be of huge benefit to those who have been crippled in any manner or form.
In a sense, you're right. There ARE possibly millions of children who could be benefitted by this technology. They're in hospitals across the world trying to recover from a traumatizing wound, or are in their homes trying to cope and regain functionality in their daily lives. Technology like this could speed up the recovery process and help ease the trauma of losing a limb, for all age groups.
Whether you lost fingers in a Boating accident, had your hand crushed in a construction project, were have a deformity caused by disease or genetic flaw, or had your hand blown up by a "dud" firework on the 4th of july (causing intense nerve and tendon damage and damaging the bone), this technology presents one possible alternative for these people so that they can keep enjoying gaming.
Taking a potshot on what was meant as a harmless example and expecting to not get called on it was wrong. You should know better than to make comments like that. It either proves you are a troll, or serves as an indicator of your maturity, whether physical or emotionally.
...and trying to act like a Martyr with the cliche "Vote me down, I don't care, I'm right and you're wrong" bullshit...come on, grow up. Defend your arguments like a man, or get off the internet.
Raheem @ Feb 2nd 2008 2:10PM
Lmao yeah like REAL MEN ON THE INTERNET! Truth be told I didn't defend my argument properly because I took heed of the fact that this was not the correct place to be doing so. I made a point and look how far it's blown up so far - how would it help to elaborate in here? I'd be happy to discuss with anyone if they want to in the correct environment.
