Winning Eleven? Nope, it's Pro Evolution Soccer

But that naming confusion has been put to rest and will be no more as Konami just made it official that Pro Evolution Soccer will no longer be referred to as Winning Eleven in North America and, from hence forth, will be universally titled Pro Evolution Soccer worldwide (sans Japan). That means, North American gamers will never have a chance to experience Winning Eleven 11 (hehe, eleven), but will unite with their European brothers in playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. Rejoice and be glad.

Well they had better "officially" announce patches to fix the broken game they released this last year.
beavis23 @ Feb 6th 2008 12:05PM

Deck @ Feb 5th 2008 12:37PM
Well, that's exciting I guess.
So, is this better than FIFA 08? Fifa 08 was pretty well made this time around so I am just curious which one is better? As I've never played this one in particular.
SadisticHam @ Feb 5th 2008 12:39PM
Kinda stupid considering Europe calls it Football, Soccer is the American term so why on earth they called it soccer in the first place if it's just the European name..yeah..I'd like to know who came up with the names they don't strike me as to clever.
Boff @ Feb 5th 2008 12:49PM
Yeah it does defy logic a bit!
@Deck: I was always a Pro Ev man, but haven't played a footie game for ages.
Deck @ Feb 5th 2008 4:04PM
@Boff: Gotcha! Thanks for the information. I guess it isn't so bad after all. Rather popular. Thanks man!

The term soccer was coined in the UK a long time ago, before we invented America, to show the difference between association football (soccer) and rugby football (rugby).
In time, everyone has slipped back to using football for association football and rugby for rugby football, presumably because rugby players spend a lot of time throwing the thing around with their hands.
American football, being an offshoot of rugby (invented by US Colleges after someone's rich precious angel died on the pitch) is named after rugby football, and so shortened to football in it's native lands.
Factoid of the day: America are the undefeated Olympic champions of rugby.

Anyway, it's Pro Ev 6 for me. The current 360 version is prctically worthless, even with a half-arsed patch to mildly improve it. It seems to have gone backwards since Pro Ev 6, which is a real shame. Less features, more slowdown, horrifically jerky replays, etc etc.
Ample Salty @ Feb 5th 2008 12:53PM
So, does this mean I'll be able to play North American's now on XBL? It was a no go on PES6/WE10 last time.
Drunkenshaolin @ Feb 5th 2008 1:04PM

I can vaguely understanding renaming a Japanese game if the title doesn't translate. But why name it differently in Eu and NA.
I always assumed it was called Pro Evo Soccer because it was foreign, and that was it's name. I didn't realise they actually specifically named that for us Europeans, why wasn't it Pro Evolution Football, maybe because it sounds a bit manky.
qbix @ Feb 5th 2008 1:50PM
I think it should be called Pro Evolution Football worldwide, because that is what the sport is called.
legendtaker117 @ Feb 5th 2008 2:27PM
but if it was in the US, there are a lot of stupid gamers, they will pick up Pro evoluion Football thinking it was our american football, and then get pissed. I bet some people dont even know that thats what soccers called in Europe.
Adam @ Feb 5th 2008 3:39PM
I miss the days of ISS on ps... christ it was that long ago I can't remember... psone or ps2? :-/
mike @ Feb 6th 2008 1:27AM
you know, football (american football with the pigskin) is not only played in America. Countries all over the world play it and they all call it football. Also, soccer is not an american term. Countries all over the world play it and many call it soccer, not football.
Seeing as mostly every country in the world plays both soccer and football, Why are europeans so intent on having soccer be called "football"? That would simply result in 2 sports being called the same thing. Thats just really retarded. I think the who0le world should just refer to the sport of soccer as soccer and american football as football. That way there will be no confusion.
Europeans need to stop calling soccer football unless they manage to have the sport of football renamed to tossball or something. Why do europeans want confusion? Im canadaian for reference, not American.
Fozz @ Feb 6th 2008 2:26PM
"Of the 45 national FIFA affiliates in which English is an official or primary language, only three (Canada, Samoa and the United States) actually use "soccer" in their organizations' official names, while the rest use football (although the Samoan Federation actually uses both)." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football#Use_of_the_word_.22football.22_in_English-speaking_countries
Zoiks!
Boff @ Feb 6th 2008 5:15AM
Hmm let's see - because you play FOOTBALL with your fucking FEET.
Explain to me how a game in which you hold/throw the ball the majority of the time is called Football.
Benjamin @ Feb 6th 2008 5:55PM
To be honest Mike you are obivoulsy extremely delusion no, not everyone plays american football it is not a big sport in Europe and the rest of the world and never has there are no professional American football teams outside of the us/ Can but wait in the us they have there own FOOTBALL League in nearly every single europe, asian and african country there is Football so i'm not sure were your getting your stats from but no, no one likes a crap game which is a plan rip of Rugby and it's called football because it is played with the foot seems logical don't ya think Mike?
mike @ Feb 6th 2008 7:08PM
even if no1 likes the game worldwide, thats not an excuse. Its still an extremely popular game with hundreds of millions of fans. I myself dont even like football. The point it you cant name a popular sport the same as another. its CONFUSING. and creates a bunch of useless bickering, especially on the internet, like it is right here. I dont have a problem calling soccer "football", but only if they rename the sport of football then. Im not calling 2 fucking sports the same name. When I say to my friends, lets go play football, I want them to know what I mean. And here in canada where I live (and I assume america), we play both sports and have professional teams for both sports. Even other countries who may not have professional teams for both could still play either game for fun.
Naming 2 sports the same is just silly. So far the name "soccer" has been proposed and wildly used to describe this sport. I dont see anybody taking any steps into calling football a new name, other then forigners like from the UK who call it "american football" which is bullshit because football is played differently in canada and im sure other nations.
rodsky @ Feb 7th 2008 8:32AM
mike, srsly, you sound retarded
