With M-16 in hand, CoD4 regains Xbox Live crown
According to Major Nelson's list of most played Xbox Live games, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has again (for the second time) taken the Live crown and bumped a very stubborn Halo 3 to the second slot. Juicy good! Not two weeks ago, CoD4 was crowned the most played Xbox Live game of the week, but then last week Halo 3 shifted from second to first. Now, this week, we see another hard fought switcheroo. Again, we welcome you to voice your ever important opinion on this Halo 3 versus CoD4 Xbox Live war in the comments section below. What I don't get is that Halo usually has at least over 100,000 people online when the most I've seen on CoD4 is 88,000.

I think the difference is that halo 3 counts the amount of people that were online in the last 24 hours while CoD4 is more of a current number, I'm not certain about that, and who knows maybe MS is only counting the US live numbers.
Thinking about it there are like a dozen reasons

This little war is good for both games. If COD4 wasn't awesome, Bungie would have never, EVER, released maps this soon. And if COD4 wasn't fighting for the top slot, they would have never, ever said anything about new maps. Both games need auto-updates, and hopefully the competition will make them come faster. More Studios need to have a mind like Infinity Ward and Bungie...

Infintiy Ward need to have a quiet word with MS to get the little extras that Bungie had for Live. (If you're on Halo you get the extra bits next to the gamertag.)
The most useful was seeing how much time was left in the game. VERY HANDY for when you were waiting for an invite/someone to join. (I've used the past tense there cos I'll admit I haven't played Halo in months. Don't hate me!)
If IW can add in stat tracking and match half of what Bungie.net offers then we'll have a new champion.
But I never, ever thought Halo would have a fight on it's hands for the top spot! Well done IW & COD4 again!

maybe this is the issue. People on Halo are good and people on CoD are bad, so more people want to play a game they can have fun with.

yeah I use to be mediocre at Halo 3 with my friends whom were ok. then we played COD 4... and then we went back to Halo and got smoked.
COD 4 is a lot easier. some games I get creamed and some games I'm in the top 5.

CoD 4 is to me, the closest thing to Counter Strike on the xbox 360 console. Especially when playing the gametype "Search and Destroy," the skill and tactics required are far greater than what is needed to be successful in Halo 3. Another great feature of the game is the perk system. I get no greater thrill than when I loadout with a LMG and the "Stopping Power" and "Deep Impact" perks and kill multiple enemies through the walls!

The challenges help too, they're like mini-achievements with XP instead of Gamerscore!
Nothing better than getting 'Challenge Complete' especially on those 1000 XP'ers!
And everyone loves achievments...

I agree with the statement dunnypop made, I only find TS fun in Halo but it's way too competitive, you can only play with your l33t friends. In COD4, I can actually play deathmatch with my girlfriend and not worry about her suckage....

Well, that depends. Haha! I think my GF has had max 6 kills in a match. Although, she just started playing... even though I gave her that freakin' game at XMAS.

I thought I loved Halo 3 but I haven't picked it up in over a week.
COD4 is one awesome little game, I like the challenge system a lot, it's like getting an achievement after every fight or working for something that's palpable. Unlockables in multiplayer=longevity to any completionist.
The rank system of Halo 3 is cool and works for what it is but you hit a wall after awhile and you're just playing for fun or frustration.

I still dont understand the Call of Duty kids - do you guys sit at home alone every night??? I can't bring guests online with COD - sorry if thats a next-gen feature I sort of expect from a so-called AAA title - have fun with the 4 player local on your N64 - I mean 360

I don't understand this complaint at all. I play online with my friends all the time. It's called everyone getting their own 360. Why the hell would I want to limit my viewing area when I can have my full screen AND play with my friends.
I'm not even going to go into all of the data transfer problems that this entails. I love how a "shooters" almost main form of killing is a melee attack. This just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

I never expected CoD4 to be this good. I used to play H3 religously every Friday night but I haven't in probably a month or better. I think this competition is exactly what Halo needs. Its going to do nothing but make both franchises and future shooters go the extra mile to measure up.
If future shooter aren't taking note of the success these two franchises are having and the features each have they're going to be in trouble. I'm coming to expect this level of functionality and reward systems in my games and I'm LOVING IT!
Can't wait for the new CoD4 maps.

I haven't played COD4, but I've been told by every single person that owns it that it's badass. I really like Halo, but a lot of times you get stuck on bad teams. It's ridiculous how hard it can get in ranked (my k/d ratio is 1.00) but in social I have a 1.47 ratio.
Halo also has way too many game types. There should be a separate category to go to when you wanna play territories, CTF, neutral bomb, etc. What's wrong with just good ole fashioned slayer??

Both games are great, own both but prefer COD4; just happy us 360 owners have two GREAT online FPS multiplayer games to play.
Definitely needs a patch to correct forgiving sniper accuracy. Some new maps and possible new or switching around existing perks would be sweet too!

Well, I haven't played CoD4, as it's been sitting next to me, unopened, for two weeks, but I have such a strong dislike for Halo that I support CoD4 purely out of jerk spite.
Not that it'd make a difference; I have no interest in multiplayer, especially not online. The last multiplayer I cared about was Perfect Dark on the N64. Now THAT was a multiplayer.

I haven't played COD yet, but Halo 3 just doesn't have that spark like Halo 2 had. I played Halo 2 since the launch day, and still currently do at work during lunch. Its something about the gameplay and the maps... its just the most fun FPS I've played. Halo 3 has too many issues with damage and maps that just plain stink. Bungie needs to have a "Classic Map Pack" and bring back the perfection of Lockout, Midship, etc. Until then, it will continue collecting dust while I play Guitar Hero and wait for GTA.

I play both games but I've found myself playing COD4 way more. Some people like COD4 and some like Halo 3. Problem I see with Halo 3 is the children but they are slowly moving into COD4 anyways. Also Halo 3 has a very hardcore community which likes to find glitches and does anything even if it is cheating to win. This is great as Halo 3's patch might comes sooner, and so might COD4's patch. Remember 360 fanboys competition is good.
