Controllers modded specifically for Gears, Halo, etc [Update]

Controllers with turbo buttons have existed for many years, going all the way back to the NES, and controller mods for the 360 are nothing new. But having a turbo button (among many other things) modded into what looks like a standard controller is news to us. The guys over at HGcontrollers seem to have started up a fine little business doing just that. The above graphic is really from their site (can you spot which are the real and fake buttons) and details some of the special enhancements made to the controller for the express purpose of playing shooters.
The goal of these mods is to create a controller configuration that can be played through the entire game experience without having to remove one's thumbs from the sticks. Theoretically, this means that your aim with said sticks will improve, as you no longer have to take your thumb off it to hit the essential buttons. However HGcontrollers does more modding of controllers than simply moving buttons. The staff there will actually create a controller with a custom button layout, toggle switches, microprocessors (turbo) for rapid fire, and more if you've got the cash for it. In fact, their website seems to be a bit behind the times forgetting to tell its readers that there are even controllers specially built for Gears that do your Active-Reloading for you. These controllers look great and all, but specifically modding (or buying) your controller to get better at a game sort of defeats the purpose (FUN!) for us here.

Plus, the truth is such a mod would probably only incrementally help your game- if you suck at Halo, you'll still suck at Halo, whether or not you have a fancy controller. "It's not the controller that counts, it's how you use it."
mattclarkie @ Feb 10th 2008 2:02PM
The best thing that Bungie did was using RB and LB, sometimes after I have played other games I forget and use X, but once you get used to it RB/LB reload means that you can reload one gun and still pwn those noobs. I don't know why the mod moves RB but not X which is actually in-convenient
Tyler @ Feb 10th 2008 2:08PM
Ummm thes are nothing compared to what GamerModz.com Are doing to their Remotes. Check it out http://gamermodz.com/
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 2:29PM
Actually, the feature list appear to be about the same: turbo for rapid fire, moved buttons, microprocessors, etc.
The button combos, such as BXB and the instant sticky are not absolutely reliable anyway and are likely being gotten rid of in the AU.
Tyler @ Feb 10th 2008 2:36PM
The thing is Turbo for rapid fire aint the same Trust me iv Read up and talk to the maker of theese. Even his Halo rapid fire and Normal rapid fire are different. and the instant sticky might be replaced with another rapid fire. but trust me these guys refined the proceses all the rest are fakes. and what do you mean ther going to get rid of them in Astronomical Units.
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 2:45PM
heh, not Astronomical Units, but Auto-Update.
The latest Bungie Weekly Whats Update told us that they're getting rid of BXB and other glitches. Also, Rapid Fire and Turbo (AFAIK) work exactly the same: they tell the controller that the button is being pressed about once every millisecond. The reason that the gun does not REALLY fire once every millisecond has to do with the animation and maximum rate of single fire for the individual gun.
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 3:04PM
See, in practice, rapid-fire and turbo are THE SAME. And since you seem to know more about button glitches than me (cheater), you read this and tell me whether or not BXB is removed: http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=13233
GAMERMODZoCOM @ Feb 11th 2008 8:34PM
Terrance email me at sales@gamermodz.com. I would like to know if you would like to do a review of our mods for all of your readers.
Tyler @ Feb 10th 2008 3:27PM
Trust me i know about RF and T but trust me ther not the same. depends on how you program the remote. basicly they are exact tho because ther always caped like you said the Max Aini Rate. but bxb can never be fixxed atleast the new one cause it only works with 2 guns its BYYB is the New BXB so if ther going to fix BXB ther basicly stickin a finger in the pooper. lets just agree that thes remotes are worthless. even buying the best equipment wont get you to the Top so
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 3:28PM
oops, my response above was supposed to be HERE.
GAMERMODZoCOM @ Feb 10th 2008 4:41PM
Actually the Auto Update will get rid of the useless but well know BXB which was a little quicker than ours however once again it was not useful. Our BXB will be the ONLY thing left that works after the update! Any questions let us know!
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 4:45PM
I stand corrected readers.
So for those of you with $169.99 to spend, head over to the bottem of this:
http://gamermodz.com/halo_3_modded_controller.html#choose
page, and choose your BXB/InstaStick controller.
GAMERMODZoCOM @ Feb 10th 2008 4:48PM
The update will not affect our BXB. It only affects the BXB and BXR that required someone to melee you at almost the exact same time.
Also HG only has a Rapid Fire and remapped buttons. They do not do buttons combo's like us. There Rapid Fire does not function the same as our Halo 3 mods Rapid Fire. To see the video's just go to out site. You will be amazed.
Our mods have benn given incredible reviews, and become very popular. We have many more mods on the way outside of the current ones as well including mods for Call of Duty 4 (outside of our Rapid Fire that already works awesome for it).
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 5:08PM
I understand, and I apoligize for not doing a bit more research into other companies doing the same thing.
I wasn't trying to advertise their product over yours. We were given a tip about a modded Gears of War controller that used button combos to Active Reload perfectly. I followed the links to their site, and reported on what else was there.
I've updated the post to add a link to your site, as it fits with the headline. Though I should point out that the price difference and feature difference between your products does mean that they could appeal to slightly different audiences. Ours seems a bit more hardcore, expensive, and specialized. Theirs seems just a bit more casual, cheaper, and more generalized.
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 5:09PM
Oops, sorry, "Ours" in that second-to-last sentence should be "Yours"
GAMERMODZoCOM @ Feb 10th 2008 5:23PM
I completely understand and appreciate the thought of pointing us out in your article.
Ours are a bit more expensive because of the extra work that is put in to the actual modding we do. We used to do the Halo 2 modded controllers and the price was much higher. We decided to release the first and "only" real halo 3 mods for much cheaper.
We also offer all of our mod in a variety of controllers. The controllers are all brand new. They are not used, or suplus market controllers. The benifit of this you are getting a absolutely brand new controller premodded with our mods.
Once I again I really appreciate you including us in this article and if you have any questions please feel free to let us know. This goes for everyone else as well.
Thanks,
Colin Jones

Oh the way we also have Gears Of War active reload controllers. Not sure what HG's prices are on them but ours are $149.99.
ryan @ Feb 10th 2008 5:30PM
this was the best controller for FPS:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41N9GGQNEEL._AA280_.jpg
sadly it was cheaply built, but they had the right idea and it instantly made playing any FPS more enjoyable. sucks they wont be making any for this gen.
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 5:41PM
Waaaiitt. . .
Isn't that one of those all-in-one handheld games with worse graphics than the original Gameboy?
ryan @ Feb 11th 2008 3:12AM
haha, no. it's an actual controller. the screen is there so you swap X for A or B for Y or White for black or any control setup you choose. it's very smart and versatile.
also why the heck do i have to reply to myself whenever i want to reply back? why can't i reply back to the person who replied to my comment?
Chicago_Josh @ Feb 10th 2008 5:55PM
This would be good for left-handed gamers, especially for games like Gears where using the A,B,X, and Y buttons are so integral to the control scheme.
With games like Halo 3 and CoD4, I can usually just pivot my right hand when I need to do something like jump or melee, but the gameplay in Gears makes it too awkward to do. Having the buttons underneath would definitely remedy that.
Of course, I just got RRoD'd today, so I guess I really won't have to worry about that at all for a couple of months. (grrrrr...)
bsbauman @ Feb 10th 2008 8:02PM
this important thing is they sell $30 WIRELESS CONTROLERS!!!
THAT IS NEWS
terrence @ Feb 10th 2008 8:06PM
I didn't want to mention that, out of fear that they actually sell those at a loss, I couldn't imagine that they'd be making a profit. . .
Evan @ Feb 10th 2008 10:11PM
Man, this sounds like cheating. Boo cheating.
ZeroCorpse @ Feb 11th 2008 1:02AM
If you buy a controller for just one game, you're an idiot.
Unless it's Guitar Hero. Then you're cool... this month.
GAMERMODZoCOM @ Feb 11th 2008 10:56AM
Keep a look out on our site for Guitar Hero mods. We are in developement of a couple cool things for that game.
As noted before we also have a lot more being released outside of our Halo 3 mods, Rapid Fire mods, and Gears of War mods.
snowy @ Feb 11th 2008 3:10AM
i always thought they should put buttons on the bottom of the contorllers.
mattclarkie @ Feb 11th 2008 6:42AM
Like the N64. The Z button was a good idea, but damned hard to get to in most cases.
Super Sneb @ Feb 11th 2008 4:03AM
wow, i need to find a UK seller!!!
Dr Ecksack 3000 @ Feb 11th 2008 7:49AM
this is like all this stuff for PC-gamers: special gamer keyboards, special gamer mouses, special gamer mousepads (!) and all this bullshit.
If you suck you suck, it won't help you..
George Arauz @ Feb 11th 2008 3:04PM
Pretty nifty
