Call of Duty 4 maintains top Live spot

The battle for Xbox Live supremacy continues this week. Quick recap: about a month ago, Call of Duty 4 managed to kick Halo 3 off of the top Xbox Live spot. The following week, Halo 3 returned to the number one slot. Last week, COD4 knocked Halo 3 off of its perch once again. Well, guess what folks: Major Nelson just posted the most recent Xbox Live top ten and ... Call of Duty 4 is still number one. That's right, Call of Duty 4 has been number one for two weeks in a row. Can it last? Frankly, we hope not, because finding images for the COD4 / Halo 3 feud is one of the highlights of our week.

Once Vegas 2 comes out I'd be surprised if CoD4 is ever on top again. Once CoD4 is #1 for the same amount of time Halo 3 has been, then I'll be impressed with them.
Matt @ Feb 13th 2008 2:39PM
No way. Vegas will not over take COD4. I have so many friends that left Vegas for COD4 and will never go back because they love COD4 so much more. The Rainbow Six franchise has always had a following, but it's never seen the blockbuster universal appeal that Halo 3 and COD4 have. COD4 has sold more than 3 million copies in the US alone. Vegas 2 will maybe sell a million in the US.
UNSCleric @ Feb 13th 2008 2:43PM
You're missing my point. Vegas 2 will take away a chunk of CoD4 players who are playing the newest realistic shooter. I have a ton of casual gamer friends who jumped from Vegas to Halo 3 to CoD4 and will now jump to Vegas 2. The people who are still playing Halo 3 (which is about the same number as CoD4) will most likely not be jumping to Vegas 2 in the same numbers as CoD4 players will be, it's all a matter of taste, and those who like Halo's gameplay have nothing else like it.
TORO @ Feb 13th 2008 3:53PM
My 2 cents. I don't think Vegas will dethrone COD, but it might take away enough players to give Halo3 the number one spot again.
TORO @ Feb 13th 2008 2:17PM
Make the jump Dustin!
Stephen @ Feb 13th 2008 3:37PM
Yeah Dustin, really. At least try it. Blockbuster, GameFly?
ryan @ Feb 13th 2008 2:32PM
i'd like to say that i contributed to this.
CoD4 just plays much better and looks better than H3.
from little things like lifting yourself over debris and sprinting to it's awesome challenge system (it's so stupid that i find myself wanting to prestige over and over.)
Matt @ Feb 13th 2008 2:42PM
I'm the same way with regards to Prestige! I love it. The game is incredible. When halo 3 came out everyone on my friends list was playing it. Now hardly any do and nearly all of them have converted to COD4. COD4 is a force to be reckoned with and I think it will be for a long time. My sincere prediction is that it will remain at number 1 until Gears of War 2 comes out.
Josh @ Feb 13th 2008 2:55PM
I'd agree that COD4 absolutely kills Halo 3's single player but the multiplayer is just more fun IMO in Halo 3. There are way too many snipers in COD4 and it's stupid that you get to choose your weapon from the get go. I like it better when everyone starts off with the same weapon and you have to earn a better one. Plus one shot body kills with a sniper rifle is lame. Lastly, vehicles just make online gaming so much more fun IMO. There's nothing better than carrying a battle rifle around until a Warthog tries to mow you down and then switch to your concealed rocket launcher so you can blast them half way across the map.
ryan @ Feb 13th 2008 3:28PM
snipers only force you to be a counter sniper and flank them. the juggernaut perk helps against one shot snipers. holding your breath helps balance a sniper's accuracy vs. always being a straight shooter.
you can choose up to 5 custom weapon settings. Everyone starting with the same weapon is the #1 reason in everyone's kill count is so high with the assault rifle in H3. it makes for a more interesting battle when everyone comes in with their own "baby".
vehicles are cool in H3, but i much prefer CoD4's air strikes and focus more on the shooting.
also i feel like an actual soldier in CoD4 with only a few hits to kill, not a slow moving energy battery like H3.
I wish H3 had sprinting like CoD4 and the melee system with the combat knife. also i prefer Ltrigger for zooming and B button to lay down on the floor.
I play CoD4 because it's funner to kill, it's funner to customize and upgrade, and it's funner just to move around the environment. i love that sprint button to death.
*btw, why am I always replying to myself on this site? why can't i reply to the people who replied to me?
Tr3y MoNey @ Feb 13th 2008 3:01PM
CoD4 is the $hit. Period. A lot of my friends have quit playing it b/c of the inconsistency and Severe Need for a Patch. But, Once they release the patch AND some new maps, CoD4 will straight up, WHOOP, H3's A$$ and stay on top until Gears 2 comes out. And maybe even after then seeing how GoW isn't a FPS, it's 3rd Person.
BUT...if Bungie adds a Team Snipers ONLY playlist, I might never play AnythinG else ever again. That's just me.
Ben @ Feb 13th 2008 3:11PM
According to Team Xbox a patch for COD4 has been submitted to MS for review

jaybird1905 @ Feb 13th 2008 4:09PM
You're an idiot.
Edzo04 @ Feb 13th 2008 3:17PM
why does this keep getting posted? cod4 is clearly a better game. ive known that since september 25. stop updating us, we get it.
Josh @ Feb 13th 2008 3:36PM
Funny, when I check to see how many people are playing each game, I always see around 200,000 or so playing H3 and only 88,000 playing CoD4. Oh no, its a conspiracy just like what the CoD fanboys said when it wasn't at number 1.
ryan @ Feb 13th 2008 4:31PM
no, these numbers for Halo 3 are all the players who were online in the past 24 hours. CoD4 is all who are currently online.
oh, and i responded to your reply back to me. i hate the way X3fanboy does their reply system. : (
mark.j.smith @ Feb 13th 2008 3:53PM
H3 holds the #'s from players within past 24 hours, not all that is online at that time.
ryan @ Feb 13th 2008 4:27PM
josh, pwned? ~_^
George Arauz @ Feb 13th 2008 4:04PM
Vegas 2? hellz no
jaybird1905 @ Feb 13th 2008 4:10PM
I'm interested how the upcoming DLC for both games will affect these numbers ...
Matt @ Feb 13th 2008 5:12PM
I'll tell you what it will do. Nothing for Halo 3, except give the people that already play it something more to do and it will pretty much do the same for COD4. I truly don't believe new maps always bring people back. I love COD4 for what it is and what it has to offer. Bungie/MS could offer 5 new awesome maps for free, new armor upgrades, etc, and it doesn't matter to me. I'm done with Halo 3.
SadisticHam @ Feb 13th 2008 5:31PM
Personally, I'm not a fan of COD4 multiplayer. It's luck, for the most part.
An assault can easily beat a sniper long range and don't get me started on the range of the P90, it can easily take down assaults at mid range.
Would that happen in real life? Naa, perhaps theP90 crap but an assault vs sniper? LOL?
Might be nit picking but the games supposed to be realistic sniping for the most part is useless in COD, hopefully this patch will fix it.
I still believe it's nothing but a matter of who shoots first, very rarely do you lose if you get the shot off first. I'm not a major fan of halo either but there seems to be a bit more to it than first to shoot.
Still, I'm a gears fanboy at heart i still play it often and i do realize how lucky the shotgun is but for the record, i do my best to avoid it. :P
