DMC4 Demo: Over 1 Million Served

Released at the end of January, the Devil May Cry 4 demo has undoubtedly helped in selling the game and spreading the word, but would you believe that the demo has been downloaded over a million times? It's the truth, brought to us by the same Capcom rep who gave the PS3 install response. With games like Lost Planet and Dead Rising its obvious that from early this generation, Capcom has been supporting XBLM with demos. It looks like their system is working and now over a million people have some form of DMC4 in their hands. Here's hoping that all developers and publishers now see the potential of demos to sell a game.

Bring on more free demos of cool games I say! :)

Demos are great however they can also hurt a game's sales. How many times have you played a demo for a game that you were sure you were going to buy and then turned out renting it instead?
Boff @ Feb 13th 2008 9:29AM
But that's better for us as consumers, you saved yourself a few quid/dollars/whatever by trying the demo first.
Josh @ Feb 13th 2008 9:37AM
Absolutely, I have no arguments there. Demos are the best thing since sliced bread and has saved me a lot of money. I was just talking from a business standpoint.
gamermasterman @ Feb 13th 2008 9:42AM
Personally, I usually won't buy a game unless I know I will like it.
If there is one I'm on the fence about, I'm not gunna buy it untill I play it. So demos cant hurt sales from me, only make them better.

A good demo won't hurt a game's sales. They always help it. No one would have bought Bioshock without that Demo. I think we should think in opposite terms. How much are games hurt by NOT having a demo? Assassin's Creed did alright, but I know, just from playing it, I would have bought it sooner had there been a demo for me to play.
Boff @ Feb 13th 2008 9:27AM
Yep more demos please!!
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 13th 2008 9:27AM
The thing is, because of the demo...I didnt buy it. So yeah, thanks Capcom I just saved $60.00 =)
webster1990 @ Feb 13th 2008 12:54PM
the demo was a bit poo,
but my friend bought the full game and its awesome
i wasnt going to buy it after playing the demo, but i will do now.
i hate how demo's usually only show a shit part of the game, like the dmc4 demo. why not show a good bit, so people will base their judgement on that?
SadisticHam @ Feb 13th 2008 9:30AM
Any game developer that doesn't want to release a demo for their game gets my suspicion.
I suppose the real question however, out of all those that tried the demo just how many bought the game? Do we have any 360 worldwide sales for DMC4 yet? Has it shifted over a million already?
Digital Limit @ Feb 13th 2008 9:46AM
The demo is what made me the most interested in the game. Without the demo, I probably wouldn't have cared about it at all. That said, I won't be purchasing it either way - the highlight of the demo was supposed to be the boss battle (for me, anyhow), but how the battle went down was so lame that it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Tony @ Feb 13th 2008 12:05PM
The demo is basically a really chopped up version of the first level of the game... While I liked the boss battle (despite it being ridiculously easy), it does get much better as you go on.
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 13th 2008 10:02AM
Demos dont always work well for new games. I dont think a demo of a game like say Assassins Creed would have worked well but the game is still phenominal, but then you have the Bioshock demo which sealed the deal for me to buy the game. Its just different situations with different games IMO.
Jayslacks @ Feb 13th 2008 12:57PM
I agree about Bioshock, but an Assassin's Creed demo could have been the first mission. Simple, quick, showing off everything.
thisguyrighthere @ Feb 13th 2008 10:15AM
I love demos.
The DMC demo made me decide to avoid the game. The Culdcept demo made me want to pick it up.
A bad demo will generally just make me not pre-order and wait for more reviews or even a friend to pick it up. A good demo always seals the deal with a pre-order.
ccc @ Feb 13th 2008 10:18AM
Demos rock, especially the ones that I find myself playing over and over again.
Tony @ Feb 13th 2008 11:16AM
You have to imagine that 1,000,000 downloads is a good sign of the amount of people interested in it. I mean, if 20,000 people tried it then I might imagine that it wouldn't do quite as well in stores.
I bought the game the other day and I wonder what the big deal about the PS3 install is to begin with... Certainly instant loading would be awesome, but half the time things load instantly in the game and the rest of the time they take like 4 seconds.
Digital Limit @ Feb 13th 2008 2:43PM
You found the boss battle easy? Heh, I lost both times I bought him. He does some charging attack that I can't seem to avoid. Nevertheless, I just found how the battle played out to be quite meh--hover around his head with your grabby-attack and smack him a ton. Sure, I had to avoid some attacks in the latter stages of the battle, but ultimately even when I was raping his face, I had no satisfaction. And god knows face-rape is always satisfying, so something's up.

I personally was extremely disappointed with this demo. Having never played DMC before, this demo really turned me off from a game I probably would've rented had I not played the demo.
ZeroCorpse @ Feb 13th 2008 10:05PM
In this case, the demo just confirmed that this was a game I DIDN'T want to purchase.
Bleh. Pretty anime hack-n-slasher. `Shallow as Paris Hilton.
