Eulogy for the officially dead HD DVD format
Our friends at Engadget Japan (English link) were able to live blog a press conference that ended a few hours ago where Toshiba president Nishida-san officially confirmed earlier reports that HD DVD had fallen for good in the console war. During the conference a lot of numbers were dropped on the overall impact of the HD DVD format, but instead of just dolling out the info like we've been doing all week long we thought we would write a letter to our downed friend and tell him how we really felt.Dear HD DVD,
Hey, it's everyone here at X3F. So you had a
It's funny, this whole thing really has nothing to do with video games but we keep talking about you. Maybe it's because of the whole Xbox 360 add-on thing or maybe we're just trying to ignore the fact that a new optical format in the age of digital distribution makes about as much sense as controlling an escalator with a chicken-n-beef burrito. So will Toshiba start making Blu-ray players or begin work on a new format? They won't say. What we know for sure is that somewhere Michael Bay is licking the sweet tears off of an HD DVD owner's face while pumping a fist to the sky crying for the head of Mr. Bill Gates. Wow, that rhymed! We're poet's and we didn't even know it! Nice, two for two.
With love,
X3F

May your Soul rest Eternally. It was a good Run and the Better format alas not meant to be.
Kizzle @ Feb 20th 2008 9:39AM
Yep.
HD DVD tried to do it the right way, but "the right way" got ass-rammed by marketing. Again. As usual.
It's no coincidence that dual format owners generally preferred HD DVD.
Oh well. I'm sure I'll be ok, I can find something to take solace with...

"Michael Bay is licking the sweet tears off of an HD DVD owner's face"
More like licking the tip of Blu-ray's c**k...
DjDATZ @ Feb 19th 2008 11:40AM
LOLOLOLOL...blu-ray's c**k ahahahaha

Jer @ Feb 19th 2008 1:27PM
Oh damn, that was funny.
Vohaul79 @ Feb 19th 2008 11:42AM
And in other news, the Xbox 360 looks more and more like an over priced no HD drive RROD piecer.
Yoinks!
Sure see a lot of "I hope they make a Blue Ray add on quick" in the post comments all over the net...Suckit xboys, you dont deserve one. You vehemently protested BR.
DIEGO @ Feb 19th 2008 11:48AM
you're an idiot...
rockeranimefreak @ Feb 19th 2008 12:23PM
What are you doing here troll? Blu ray is backed but not owned by Sony. Voted down for ignorance. Not everybody has an hd player yet ... not me anyways.
Jer @ Feb 19th 2008 1:29PM
I don't want a BluGay add-on. I'll stick with standard DVDs and upscale.
DjDATZ @ Feb 19th 2008 11:46AM
Good night HD DVD. Good morning Blu-Ray.
I've never been on either side of the format war...so I don't care much. I just don't like giving Sony a victory...lol
Blu-Ray add-on for the Xbox 360!!!
DIEGO @ Feb 19th 2008 11:52AM
now all that needs to happen is Blu-ray needs to match the interacivity of HD-DVD and we're good.
Mark @ Feb 19th 2008 8:06PM
Don't worry. I think there are 10 more BluRay spec revisions in the pipeline to make sure they obsolete everyone's player atleast once.
Vohaul79 @ Feb 19th 2008 11:53AM
Oh cmon DIEGO!
This site and joystiq did nothing but mock the inclusion of a BR drive for the last year +....
I think a little victory dance is deserved, no?
Everyone calling for a BR add on all of which mocked its inclusion in the PS3..
Dont hate the player hate the game! And learn to cry by yourself at night as the 360 turns into the Dreamcast 2..Once again MS has bonered a product.
Btch.
Cal @ Feb 19th 2008 12:16PM
So because HD-DVD, to which the 360 is/was only connected by a single accessory and weak support from its father, has failed, the 360, which is currently the market leader and console of choice for video gamers, is suddenly going to fail too? That's some funny logic you've got there...
Philpott @ Feb 19th 2008 1:41PM
Microsoft bonered a product? -that whooped your product's as so hard it had trouble sitting down. Sure, Playstation 3 might come up in the next year and sell tons o' tons of consoles but Microsoft is already able to start development on 3 whereas Sony needs to see a sizable profit before they will lay waste to Playstation 3.
How 'bout them apples?
Mark @ Feb 19th 2008 8:11PM
I think they're mocking the forced inclusion. Can't see the difference? It's the difference between a car company that forces you to get leather seats and a sun roof VS one that lets you pick if you want to spend the money or not. Don't think that the PS3 BluRay player is free with purchase. It's a mandatory add on... one that some people would rather have left out and kept their money.
Oorang @ Feb 19th 2008 11:57AM
Its a tragedy that big business decided the format war and not the consumer.
Its good for Xbox though...now Microsoft can integrate Blu Ray into the 360 and kick Sony to the curb! LMFAO!
Vohaul79 @ Feb 19th 2008 11:59AM
Ya know, I loved my 360 Premium launch console...Didnt have any problems, no fan noise, however my disc drive vibrated like a corksucker making in abnoxious for movies..
Upgraded to the sexiest looking console out, the Elite..
Got screwed by the games transfers...Fan made a terrible whining noise far offsetting the disc tray...Power cord was barely making a connection into the back of the 360/ would cut off / on...
Basically MS made a half baked console...Didnt even have HDMI included for the love of....
However, I still miss my xbox live / gui / and the controller is one of the best ever made (except the dpad which is very gay for arcade games)..Trumps the suxaxis...
Had to abandon ship due to shotty hardware and expensive propriatary addons....
Anyone need a white wireless donge? I still have mine lying around somewhere...
Adam @ Feb 19th 2008 11:59AM
Well i gotta go buy a ps3 now good job toshiba and ms you left me no choice assholes.
Nah seriously the days of optical media are over. And for the time being dvd will continue to sell especially now that theres quality upscaleing who needs bluray?
Neon Jebus @ Feb 19th 2008 12:07PM
Discs will continue to be the format of delivery until the time all console makers (mostly Microsoft) manage to allow the user an inexpensive option to store digital format.
The dollars they are demanding for HDD for the 360 is BS.
And because of that, the disc will remain. As for the Blu-Ray add on for the 360...honestly if I need a Blu-Ray player bad enough I'll just get a PS3. That way I get to watch Blu-Ray movies and play Twisted Metal.
HEY!!!! @ Feb 19th 2008 12:02PM
stop assuming you know who you're talking to i have a PS3 and i own Blu-ray movies.
HEY!!!! @ Feb 19th 2008 12:07PM
"who needs bluray?"
the PS3 does because thats the only reason for having one right now.
Philpott @ Feb 19th 2008 1:45PM
at least you're an honest fanboy. I love my Xbox 360 but it's issues are fuxor
Terrence Meekins @ Feb 19th 2008 12:19PM
An BR add on would be cool but it'd have to be like 150 to 200. Anything above that and I'll get a PS3.
thadwhit @ Feb 19th 2008 12:22PM
Well along with the blu-ray drive that will come out for 360 in May, it looks like Streaming Netflix through your 360 will be announced tomorrow.

Us europeans are the losers in the HD wars.
HD-DVD had no regioning, Blu-Ray has three regions.
MrKniceGuy @ Feb 19th 2008 4:54PM
U.S. users loose the same way. There was always the chance that a Blew-Ray exclusive state side would be released on HD-DVD in Europe. And of course, with no region coding it could just be imported. But not anymore....
Ryan Waddell @ Feb 19th 2008 2:05PM
"...[T]he fact that a new optical format in the age of digital distribution makes about as much sense as controlling an escalator with a chicken-n-beef burrito."
I have to respectfully disagree here. Yeah, super, we're in the age of digital distribution... but MY ISP limits my download quota to 60gb a month, so let me tell you, I don't want to be downloading 10 HD quality videos with the overage that THEY charge :)
Granteezy @ Feb 19th 2008 2:37PM
FINALLY
Goombakid @ Feb 19th 2008 2:58PM
My question is, why were there no HD-DVD games being made for the 360? You only can cram so much on a DVD9, was there no way of developing an HD-DVD game, albeit to be played off of the $180+ HD-DVD drive some of us bought?
BerNasty @ Feb 19th 2008 3:45PM
Why would you develop a game using a format that not every XBOX 360 owner has access to? From a business stand point that would not make any sense. Im not trying to be crass, just logical.
Jove @ Feb 19th 2008 8:43PM
the specs for hd dvd werent finalised when the xbox360 launched
Jordan @ Feb 19th 2008 3:13PM
... that rhymed?
davey @ Feb 19th 2008 4:23PM
I love reading the comments in these topics. I would say 90% of them are stupid. PS3 is great and so is the xbox. PS3 has great games (uncharted) and so does the xbox (bioshock). Which one is better is totally down to personal preference because they both have good points and bad points. I have both and i love watching bluray movies and playing uncharted and i love playing gears of war on xbox live. I think it's sad that people buy products (e.g xbox) because they hate the opposing company (e.g sony). I dont like sony or microsoft but it doesnt stop my buying a PS3 and xbox.
p.s theres no way digital distribution is going to be more popular than bluray any time soon
bonzai @ Feb 19th 2008 6:54PM
Terrible, biased article. I thought this site brought facts, not opinions. Freakin Xav De Matos...
Goombakid @ Feb 19th 2008 10:11PM
@ BerNasty: True, I never took that into account. But it would've been nice for MS to stick to their guns and release a 360 with a HD-DVD drive in it (Elite or Halo 3 360s, or even an Ultimate X360). Then, even with failure, X360 developers have the option of releasing games on HD-DVD, thus giving more game content, etc.
I'm sure if Blu-Ray failed, PS3 developers would still release games on BR disc.
Perhaps if MS did integrate an HD-DVD drive after the HD-DVD specs we finalized, the format would still have some life left....but I digress.
Maybe now I can get the Transformers movie on BR. :P
J. De Luis @ Feb 20th 2008 4:03AM
Why does everybody keep believing that their will be Blu-ray player for the xbox? If Sony has their way (yes I know blu is not owned just by Sony) there would not be much of reason for those who own xbox 360 to buy a Playstation3 to watch high def movies.
Seeing how the lowest stand alone Blu-ray player is $400, I doubt Playstation3 will want competition from a $200 add-on.
Ryan @ Feb 19th 2008 5:03PM
There is absolutely NOTHING Sony can do to stop Microsoft from releasing a blu-ray add-on if Microsoft were to decide to make one. Nothing. They have no legal power in that matter.
aeron @ Feb 27th 2008 4:30PM

Blu-ray still sucks c**k, and people are fine with reg. Dvd's. No1 cares. and you do.......
And about the shotty hardware, sony's psp actually breaks my psp umds........ so yeah, I guess they have quality control....
