Same old story: CoD4 is still the Xbox Live king

We're thinking that reporting on the weekly Xbox Live Activity may be a bit redundant now, seeing that the Call of Duty 4 / Halo 3 tug-o-war has died down with CoD4 again being the most played Live game last week. CoD4 has been on top of the list for something like four weeks straight and it's sort of becoming the norm. We've lost our fanboy excitement and miss the comment battles between unruly H3 and CoD4 fanboys. Humph. We'll see what next week brings and if H3 can climb the hill once again. Maybe we'll stuff the ballot box so to speak by gathering the community for a final H3 achievement push. Maybe, but doubtful.

On a side note, it's nice to see N+ on top of the XBLA list this week. Those free XNA games may have stole some of its spotlight, but N+ obviously didn't mind.

I'd like to say thanks for pointing me in the direction of N+, I wouldn't have even looked at it if it wasn't for the fancast. Awesome game!
On another note, COD4 > Halo 3, yea I said it, what? bring it on!

You only say that because CoD4 is an individualist shooter. One person can completely rule a lobby. Not to brag or anything, but I know this because I do so.

On the other hand, in Halo's team deathmatch, some kind of teamwork is required to win. But, as many on this site know, most Halo players play each match like it's a regular deathmatch.

Simple explanation for CoD4's popularity: individualist shooter for the individualists in Xbox Live.

I say that because COD4 has a better story IMO, better online including perks, airstrikes, helis etc. and contrary to your individualist idea, team tactical, search and destroy, headquarters, hardcore playlists, these aren't tactical? Obviously some are better than others, that's inevitable, doesn't automatically make it individuality.

I'm sorry, you must be one of those kids that enjoys faceless heroes in space...on planets in the shape of rings, fighting with 'frickin lazer beams'. The story has variation, innovative levels, you're never bored really playing through the single player campaign, unlike other 'epic' games I know.

COD4's story is far superior to Halo 3's. It has better pacing, more dramatic action, a more satisfying conclusion and a way better post-credits epilogue. Just because it's not about a bunch of made up alien stuff doesn't mean it's not a great story.

It won't be a new champion, it'll be Halo 3 again. R6V2 will pull just enough people from COD4. But I'm not getting R6V2 and my friends said they're sticking with COD4...can't wait for the new maps!

COD4 is a great game....Halo 3 is also a great game. Apprently a bunch of people with the maturity of 7 year olds can't accept the fact that there can be two equaly great games and if one is above the other on the XBL played list its the end of the world. So pretty much its a case of COD4 fanboys shut up, we know your game is on top most of us can't care less. Halo3 fanboys, you shut up too, so what Halo3 wasn't on top, face it Halo3 is the end all be all of games, sure it does have great features and really pretty graphics but still.

Agreed. Well put. Some people appreciate fantasy in their games (jumping really high, alien weapons, etc.), some appreciate realism (Earth gravity, realistic weapons, etc.) in their games. Neither is better or worse.

We, as gamers, need to put aside our diffs and unite! Find solidarity in the one fact that connects us all: we hate the outdoors!

I just hate the fact that I can pump half of a clip and not kill a guy in H3.
oh and the fact you can't run.
no perks.
no air strikes.
no helicopters.
no prone. (I never do unless I need to crawl through a hole.)

Oh, I have seen idiot tea bagging in COD4.

I do have to admit I like vehicles in H3.

I'll play H3 some more when the the maps becomes free.

Both are good games, however one thing that one cannot argue is that Halo is MUCH more approachable by new players. COD pretty much screws you over in the beginning by not matching you based on rank, and by not giving you access to everything. In Halo3, you're matched with players that are somewhat at your skill level, and that have exactly the same equipment as you. It's a level playing field.

I do like COD4's level design over Halo3, but I have more fun in Halo because it's simpler. And people gripe about the melee in Halo3... give me a break. COD4's knife attacks are far worse.

people move to COD4 just because Halo 3 is pretty much redundant of what Halo 2 offered. I would have loved to see COD4 come out when Halo 2 had come out. COD4 or any other shooter had no chance what so freaking ever to even move Halo 2 from the top.

If anything blame M$ for pushing Bungie in direction of redundant gameplay.

Last but not the least, I'd pick R6 over COD anyday anytime, not to mention I rocked R6V ;)

Personally I'm in the COD4 camp. Halo 3 to me feels just like Halo 2 and err... well halo 1. Too much run and gun imo and if I wanted that I'd play UT3 which is vastly superiour to it.

Halo 3 story was pap if you ask me. COD4 SP wasn't great but at least it was short and pretty good.

When people say that CoD4 fans just suck at Halo, it sounds retarded, but it has some truth to it.

To be honest the only reason I think CoD4 is so popular is cause it's so EASY. Seriously, beating any enemy in that game requires simple to fire for half a second in the general direction of an enemy. Sniping usually is a one hit kill, and spraying the P90 all over a tight space will clean rooms in low lag scenarios.

The masses try Halo 3, find it a bit hard, and move on too a prettier, easier game.

I'm not saying that CoD4 is a bad game, I play it all the time. All I'm saying is why I think it's so popular with the masses.

It's like when I played Mario Kart: DD on the old Cube. I got sick of how easy it was, even though it was pretty and had tons of features. I switched to F-Zero GX looking for a challenge, and to play something that required more than basic skills to win.

While I'm at it, I just wanna say that the Headquarters game type is broken. Respawns in that level usually give one team an absurd advantage.
