BioShock's Big Daddy just wants to have fun

While trolling the 4chan image boards the team at Bits Bytes Pixels Sprites stumbled upon this a gorgeous wallpaper depicting the Big Daddy and Little Sister having, as our own Dustin would say, "good times."
Ripped from the narrative of the award-winning BioShock, the Big Daddy and Little Sister are central characters in the great underwater city of Rapture and have inspired everything from fan art to developer discussions on the importance of simple stories in games. This beautiful piece deserves to be added to your desktop, so would you kindly download it.

This wallpaper was released either in the same week that bioshock was released or maybe even before. I've had it for an aweful long time. Anyways, nice to see it getting some publicity it's an awesome wall.
Xav de Matos @ Feb 27th 2008 6:16PM
Ok. Glad you enjoy it.

Bioshock is not going down easy for me. I've taken several cracks at it and it consistently irritates me. I'm going to grit my teeth and get through it this time but so far it seems kind of like a mess. I'm not understanding the genius of all the hacking mini-games and RPG elements. At this point I don't see why a dumbed down Bioshock with more streamlined game play wouldn't have been just as effective at telling the story.
caramelzappa @ Feb 27th 2008 7:01PM
You think the elements of Bioshock need to be dumbed down? Most people complain about hacking being too easy and resources too plentiful. The game is already ridiculously dumbed down compared to System Shock 2, which bioshock is a "spiritual successor" to.
To help with your hate of hacking, once you get the camera take a bunch of pictures of the turrets (grounded and flying) after a few pictures they hack instantly so you don't have to waste your time with pipes.
If you don't like the rpg elements the game still plays through fine if you ignore them. You can still deal with almost any situation by plowing forward and firing a bunch of bullets, but I though a lot of fun in the game was customizing my ablilities with gene tonics and putting together "inventions"
Etchasketchist @ Feb 27th 2008 7:40PM
It's not the ease of the hacking or the availability of the resources that I have a problem with, it's the sheer number of tasks I have to complete. Take pictures of things, manage my plasmids, manage my ammo, upgrade my guns, listen to the diaries, hack things. And all this when, like you said, just plain shooting at stuff seems to work fine. I have yet to understand why any of this side stuff is 1. necessary or 2. extra fun. Maybe all is revealed as I play on further. We'll see. Right now it's all just confusing and irritating. And not satisfying. It feels like chores, not play. Gets in the way of the experience more than it enhances the experience.

it makes me sad when a gamer cannot appreciate depth.
Etchasketchist @ Feb 27th 2008 9:21PM
Well aren't you Mr. Awesome. It's not like I'm an idiot who just wants to shoot stuff. I just don't find this seemingly random collection of gameplay elements particularly compelling. Seriously, if adding a Pipe Dream mini game is considered "depth", I'll take the refined minimalism of Portal or N+ any day. And what's the point of "depth" if it's entirely optional and unnecessary? It's not deep, it's distracting.
caramelzappa @ Feb 27th 2008 10:02PM
The whole point is you have choice. You really don't have to hack anything if you don't want to. If you want, you can use the same key plasmids through the whole game. I think there are only 2 or 3 key diaries you absolutely NEED to listen to, and they are all glowing and sparkling so they're easy to tell apart. I don't understand how upgrading your gun can be a complaint, it's just giving you an extra edge on the harder splicers and it lets you choose what gun you prefer.
A strong theme, and a lot of the depth of Bioshock, comes from choice. This is where you are not appreciating the depth of the game. Rather than let all those little things bother you, you can CHOOSE to ignore them and enjoy a simple shooter if you prefer. But there's more than that. You can choose what guns to upgrade and what plasmids to buy so that you can stratigize what weapons will be at your disposal. It allows you to be creative as you play through the game. You can just set people on fire and shoot them all you want, or you can line the cieling with trap bolts and use a cyclone trap to have them fly up towards their death. You can use gene tonics to power up your wrench, camouflage to make you invisible when you sit still, and lurk your way around like a stealth game if that's what you prefer. You can use that same camouflage gene tonic and enrage to sit in the corner and watch your enemies take care of themselves. You can search around for diaries if you want to dig deaper into the story of Rapture's fall, or you can just plunge ahead.
Choices. The things you call fluff are allow the game to have choices. You can play through it however you want, whether that be traditional run at them and shoot or something more creative.
1. It's not necessary. But it does reinforce the theme of choice throughout the game.
2. It's fun because it allows choice and customization in the otherwise linear, non-personal world of first person shooters and it makes the world of Rapture more immersive.
What I don't understand is if you do see all these extra "tasks" as a chore, why do you do them? Just ignore them, that's why it's one of the choices, so people like you can just move forward and play it like a regular shooter.

I am pretty sure that picture was a design for a t-shirt on threadless.com. They had a promotion for Bioshock a few months ago and that design was one of them.
Here is the link, http://www.threadless.com/submission/114090/mr_bubbles,the other designs including the one that won, were pretty awesome.
