Undertow Path of the Elect expansion this Wed

Undertow's Path of the Elect expansion will give XBLA gamers an additional five campaign single / co-op levels, a new playable alien race called the "Elect" and four extra multiplayer maps. But this is not charity DLC as Chair Entertainment will be charging 400 Microsoft points for their Path of the Elect content. Then again, it isn't like the majority of Undertow owners didn't get the game for free, so we'll probably be tiny bit more open minded with our purchasing decision. Path of the Elect. DLC. Tomorrow. Buy.

I really dont understand why people dont like this game, its a simple, cool side scrolling little adventure with really nice graphics for such a small game. The fact that it has replay value as well makes it even more appealing, i wish more people would play it online, it seems like it would be fun with a bunch of smarter AI, but i think ill probably be getting this DLC, i got the game for free so, more reason to spend the 2 bucks on it.

I bought this when it came out (my apology gift was RezHD) and played through the campaign and a small amount of multiplayer. I had hoped when they gave it away more of my friends would get into it. Since they never play it I can't see myself playing it again or buying the expansion. It's a shame too, because it really is a fun game and with a good team of friends, it could be a great time.
tim @ Mar 4th 2008 10:52AM
So, they basically created an expansion pack in hopes of getting some of their money back. Sneaky bastards.
mike @ Mar 4th 2008 11:45AM
you idiots who purchase this are falling right into microsofts trap. They gave us undertow free, a game no1 really wanted to begin with. It was a decent title until it gets ultra repetitive after playing it for a couple hours.
Now they come out with DLC for it knowing suckers like you will say" oh I got the game free, whats 400 points on some new content". Halarious. I wont be going anywhere near that new content.

What's fun about this game?
It looks cool, interesting concept ... but the actual gameplay is atrocious.
I tried to give it a chance, but it makes no sense half the time you can't tell whose who and there's no visible markers of your friends online.
I actually bought it, then got refunded the 800MS points for the free gift. Oh well.
jaybird1905 @ Mar 4th 2008 11:48AM
@ Mike - Or they had planned to release DLC from the start ...
You silly people and your Microsoft conspiracy theories.
I bet Bill Gates was on the grassy knoll too.
mattclarkie @ Mar 4th 2008 11:53AM
I liked undertow, at 400ms I may do it for 5 new campaign missions, that is 33% more game.
Mark @ Mar 4th 2008 11:57AM
I can understand that the game isn't for everyone. But I'm not sure why some people are so negative against it. I personally think that the capture control points underwater aspect is different and decent enough to make it a good game. It also got decent reviews on metacritic. Where's all this hate coming form? If you think the AI is bad or if your friends don't play it, then play online against strangers.
schwal @ Mar 4th 2008 12:24PM
i never even beat the campaign, why would i buy this?
Swagman @ Mar 4th 2008 12:46PM
I love this game. And once my friends gave it an honest chance, they love it too.
This expansion is so bought.
jaybird1905 @ Mar 4th 2008 12:56PM
This game provides little in means of actual meaningful combat.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it ridiculously easy to get killed? Although this is a "new take" on an old genre, I've played many games that require some sort of dexterity and skill to stay alive. In this game it seems there's no way to get around being blown to shit within a few hits, especially against a wave of enemies.
The constant respawning (which may have been intended) got old and I really didn't like the game. Holding the control points, especially in the single player, seemed like such an arbitrary task.
Even playing online with friends, you don't know who or where they are most of the time. Mainly because there is no name indicator for who your multi player opponents actually are.
This game wasn't too fun. Made me want to go play CoD4. :)

"In this game it seems there's no way to get around being blown to shit within a few hits"
Yeah, that's why there's a dodge button. No, you don't take 5 hits to the face and keep playing. Well, unless you're at a control point where you get your health back. You have to dodge the incoming fire.
"The constant respawning (which may have been intended) got old and I really didn't like the game. "
Since you're playing your team life total against their team life total and it's a war of attrition, it means you're probably going to do a lot of respawning. But the team that respawns the least will win.
"Holding the control points, especially in the single player, seemed like such an arbitrary task."
About as arbitrary as any other goal in games. Why am I collecting stars again? But the control points give you places to respawn from so you're looking for good locations that are easy to defend or good to spawn from to launch attacks. If your team has to swim farther to the battle, they'll lose.
" Mainly because there is no name indicator for who your multi player opponents actually are."
One of the bumpers will show you.
jaybird1905 @ Mar 4th 2008 1:18PM
@Mark
"Yeah, that's why there's a dodge button. "
You've got to be kidding me. Do you think being someone whose played more than one video game in my entire life I wouldn't look for some sort of "evade" or "dodge" button?
Honestly the controls just feel weird when you try to evade and swim around a bunch of attacking enemies. Yea, you can dodge your sweet little ass off for a few seconds ... but you die quickly, and repeatedly in this game.
"it means you're probably going to do a lot of respawning. But the team that respawns the least will win."
Respawning frequently, for the good of the team or not, is not fun. Sorry.
You made some decent points, but I still don't find the game play "fun" or even "good" by today's standards. This game will sit on my hard drive until the Xbox720 comes out.

The Depth in Undertow comes from it's Rock/Paper/Scissors style of character selection. If someone throws one type of enemy at you, you pick a different one. They're splash-damaging with larger units? Circle around with machinegun units and pelt them in the back. Slow shots getting you? Sprint by with a small unit and depth charge them. Counter Short Range Shots with Long range artillery.
Also remember the game has rechargeable shields, just like Halo. The "Quick deaths" of this game REALLY make it so that you should rely more on team dynamic, and less on being a one man army.
Undertow is a lot more fun when you have a friend you can coordinate with!
As far as this content pack... I already decided Rocketmen is my purchase for this week, but this sounds like it might join my "want to get" list.
Mark @ Mar 4th 2008 2:18PM
The actual act of respawning isn't fun, but it's not really a negative for me either. I just rush back to battle over the control point. Taking over the control point is fun. Successfully defending a control point from a wave of attackers is fun. Shutting out the other team is fun. Being the last member of your team alive and getting a control point so that they can all get back in is fun.
I see it as similar to Onslaught for Unreal Tournament 2004 and I liked that game a lot.
Greg @ Mar 4th 2008 2:19PM
Got it for free. I want my money back!
dylan @ Mar 4th 2008 2:44PM
Brilliance on Microsofts part, give away a game for free that only maybe a few thousand people would have paid for, then release DLC that now at least ten times the amount will buy, they gave us crappy service and in return found a way to profit from it...
