Dead Space will allow pausing of death

After talking with Dead Space's executive producer Glen Schofield, MTV Multiplayer learned that the whole no pause rumor was taken out of context and that Dead Space will allow the player to pause the game. Otherwise, that'd be against Microsoft and Sony's rules. What the player will not be able to do is pausable actions like in Resident Evil, where players can equip new items or add more ammo from the pause menu. Because really, pausing the game in a third person shooter to do inventory management while in the heat of a murderous alien battle is so 1999. Jeesh.

If it's a shooter... there shouldn't be so many items in your "inventory" that you need to open it. Weapons and healing items should be hot keyed. For none combat things, if I have the item in my inventory, pressing a button should trigger the correct interaction. Meaning, if there's a door.. I shouldn't have to equip the key just to open the door.
Mass Effect is a shooter with tons of weapons and abilities that you have to manage between multiple characters in the heat of combat and yet you can do that without stopping the game.

Eh? Mass Effect pauses the action whilst you're selecting your weapon or ability.

@Urza: Just for clarification, Mass Effect is not a shooter. It is an RPG. Mass Effect's combat system has elements of a third person shooter, but the game is in no way a shooter. It is an RPG. Though I see the connection you are trying to make... you just seem to be on the wrong path. ;)
As for Dead Space, at least they got the "pause" thing out of the way. Though I didn't know that it was a rule by Microsoft and Sony that one MUST have a pause feature in the game. That's, interesting. (Who would be stupid enough not to include it is beyond me, but its strange that its actually a rule).

I shall now play the game without using the pause function because that is the way developers want it. Maybe if I get a message or something will I pause the game to check it, but not in the middle of a battle.

How can a game NOT have a pause menu screen? Who the hell took it out of context? Moronic cunt.

You pause the action for inventory management in Bioshock don't you? GOTY right?
Shadowcast @ Mar 11th 2008 6:23PM
Maybe they'll just add an achievement for playing the game without pausing now.

Is it just me or does the space guys weapon look like a golden plasma rifle....
Urza @ Mar 11th 2008 11:24PM
@Mike..
Does it? I was never on the weapon select radius menu long enough to notice.
@Deck..
Interactive cutscenes don't make it a roleplaying game. The stats you pick don't effect you in combat that's straight up run and gun. The choices you make during conversations ultimately mean nothing when there's only 2 endings which are available regardless of the choices you make up to that point.
Technically speaking Mass Effect is BioWare's highest achievement. But roleplaying? It's a step back from Baldur's Gate and Jade Empire.

still seems kinda a douche move. sometimes that inventory business can take a while.
