COD4 GOTY and DLC arrive April 3
A page on Xbox.com has popped out of nowhere to announce that both the Call of Duty 4 Game of the Year Edition and the (heretofore unnamed) Variety Map Pack will arrive on April 3, a mere two weeks away. The new map pack will be available for 800 MS Points and includes the maps Creek, Broadcast, Chinatown and Killhouse. Also, don't forget that the game of the year edition of COD4 will include a token for a free download of the Variety Map Pack, so if you haven't picked up COD4 yet, you'll probably want to wait another two weeks.

Huzzah!
Lewis @ Mar 19th 2008 6:08PM
:O No beta for the new maps? Gonna buy this the first day.
Jeff Tronti @ Mar 19th 2008 6:09PM
Dose anyone else here feel like there getting screwed for buying early?
KC @ Mar 19th 2008 6:14PM
Definitely don't feel screwed. I have had a ton of fun with the game since it's release.
JohnHeist @ Mar 19th 2008 6:14PM
If you haven't gotten COD4 yet, do you even want it?
But seriously, if you haven't bought it yet, wait 2 weeks, buy the ORIGINAL COD4 (which will probably be $40) and buy the maps, still saving $10 over us who made the game #1 on live.
ZEBRA NINER @ Mar 19th 2008 6:15PM
@ Jeff Tronti,
I would feel screwed if I bought the game in the last couple of days. I bought it when it came out, and have put in my fair share of game time.
SadisticHam @ Mar 19th 2008 6:21PM
Another over priced map pack. Huzzar. Yeah, no thanks.
Thankfully IW shipped us plenty of maps at retail so I'm good.
Alex C. @ Mar 19th 2008 6:44PM
i was hoping this would come out before spring break so then i could play it for a week nonstop.
Daniel Lopez @ Mar 19th 2008 7:40PM
you have to have unrealistic expectations or be a cheap punk to feel you are getting screwed.
do you think everything should be free in life?
Iliad Force @ Mar 19th 2008 7:42PM
Yes, Jeff, I too feel screwed by Activision. I don't comprehend this move at all. In fact, it's insulting. They wouldn't have a GOTY edition if it wasn't for us early adopters. No love for the beta testers, either. And, frankly, I'm weary of the gamers on this blog who seem to be suffering from Stockholm syndrome. Wake up, people. You should have enjoyed the game you paid $60 for. That's the bargain you strike with a manufacturer. Have my money. Give me fun. They haven't done you any favors. In fact, by rewarding those who waited--that is, those who have not contributed to the success of COD4--they're subtly disregarding those of us who did.
Deck @ Mar 19th 2008 7:51PM
Can't wait! $10 for EVEN more play time of a game I love is a small price to pay!
Go go Chinatown!
Daniel Lopez @ Mar 19th 2008 8:02PM
it's capitalism ... not a hostage situation. the love is giving a quality product not things for free.
we are enjoy our 60 bucks .. this is 10 bucks is to enjoy a little more.
who has ever heard in life that upgrades are for free.. there is no contract when you buy it off the shelf.
do you think there will be any incentive to create extra content if everybody wants it for free?
designers don't get into the industry to work for free.
Russ Tundra @ Mar 19th 2008 8:23PM
True Daniel Lopez But we have had this game since the day it launched.... And now everyone who buys the GOTY edition is just getting free maps... and we ARE getting Screwed for Buying the Game we love Early!!!!!! I will still probably buy it but I am really going to argue about this!! Beta Tester on the first day, Got the game The First Day. and I have to pay $10???.. Bull.
Stephen @ Mar 19th 2008 8:55PM
I don't exactly feel screwed since i have definately gotten $60 of play time out of COD4 but i am not sure if i will pay 10 bucks for four maps, especially since RSV2 just came out.
kLaus @ Mar 19th 2008 10:33PM
i think you guys are missing the point here
CHINATOWN IS CARENTAN !!!!!!!
i'm buying that first day it comes out
Tungsten Plug @ Mar 19th 2008 10:19PM
I believe that we are getting screwed. We made the game GOTY and we suffer for that? Like Russ Tundra, I will probably buy the DLC, but I too was a first day beta tester, and first day I owned the game. I feel that I have contributed 7 days worth of time and what will they do for me? nothing. I gave them $60 plus the time we all put into it making it Number one on XBL. For those of you who don't mind paying for it.......pull down your pants.
Iliad Force @ Mar 20th 2008 11:28AM
Thanks for the lesson in free-market economics, Daniel Lopez. Totally unnecessary, but it's good to know you're fully on board with that. I have no idea where else one would hear anything apart from in life, but nevertheless you're forgetting that lots of content has been free on Xbox Live. Maybe you never owned an original Xbox. But the aberration is $10 for three maps. That is beside the point, though. What were were discussing was the reasoning behind giving free DLC to those who have not supported COD4, while making those of us who bought it on day one (and beta tested) and helped to create the conditions for a GOTY edition shell out the cash. The best response Activision's boyfriends seem to have here is that they got their money's worth so far. Good for you. Now try figuring out why late adopters should get the new maps for free.
Daniel Lopez @ Mar 20th 2008 11:41AM
With all respect for those that enjoy cod4....
its fair to say that you are not getting screwed because you are not getting free map packs vs those just picking up the game. Here is the reason .. you had it all this time and it kept you thoroughly preoccupied and satisfied during the long winter. those who had to wait were probably stuck with halo. There is a value in that and it is the opportunity cost of waiting. To save 10 bucks would you wait 4 months so you can get the game of the year edition? I know i would'nt. With 4 extra months of experience you should be smoking noobs left and right.
A few more points .. a developer has an obligation to deliver quality games not free hand outs, regardless if you played the beta or picked it up on day one.
The point of tossing a few tokens out to 'download' is to entice new people to pick up the game to continue to drive sales. Otherwise sales will remain flat.
As another gamer mentioned .. think of the cost as a tip that you might give someone for good service. Afterall COD4 is going to keep you call for the long summer ahead.
Now what we really need is weapon pack for those who are brave enough to use something other then the m16.
Bryce @ Mar 20th 2008 11:53AM
You guys who think we (people who bought the game at launch and played the beta) got screwed are also forgetting that there is a need for incentives for people who have not been playing for over 4 months. Yes we bought it early and paid $60 and are now going to pay $10 more dollars, but we are not the target audience for any specials. It is clear that we love the game and are going to continue to play it. For the people that have not bought it after 4 months, there is a reason to have incentives for. Obviously the reason Activision exists is to sell games to make money. If they are good games then they are all good, if not, then they go bankrupt. Just let them give incentives to people who haven't bought the game yet to try and expand the community and just be thankful that there are new maps. Remember Nintendo (NES)? Do you remember being able to buy new levels or maps for those games? Times change and so does the market.
Mr.ESC @ Mar 20th 2008 2:51PM
Nice just in time for my Birthday.Too bad I stop playing COD4 when I got Brawl.
Brian @ Mar 20th 2008 3:57PM
Why is everyone being a little B*tch about this. Its $10 for some new maps and well worth the entertainment.
You pay $10 to see a 2hour movie so I think its a good deal for the price for the maps. The game is amazing and its been well worth the $60.
I don't see a problem with including it in the GOTY edition, no one is forcing you to buy the new maps so either pay the $10 or use the originals not a big deal. And I agree, with Daniel designers dont work for free.
Mauricio @ Mar 21st 2008 5:05PM
No, I don't feel screwed, like everyone comes to a agreement here!! But if these new maps r for online how can I play with friends, that did not buy the map pack? And y is it not free since it is only for online? I will buy it, but can anybody answer my question?
Raoulle @ Mar 27th 2008 9:21AM
Yay, more maps for the pwn.. Love the look of that Ravine map - gonna be a sniper haven though it looks like
Cr1msonSkull @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:32PM
$10 for a a four map download, $2.50 a map. And you are saying that's overpriced? That's like... two coffees, a little over an hour of work at a min wage job, a crummy message t-shirt, a meal at taco bell if you have a high metabolism like I do.
You seriously can't afford that? Someone is an Indian Jew (no offense). And as for those saying, 'we maid this game the best online'? Well, IW made it, you just played it. Stop acting like they owe you new maps. You owe them money for the enjoyment. They make games and sell them for cash. It's how they live, and it costs a lot of money to produce maps. Artwork, programming, design, game play concepts, and so many other things. Seriously, how ridiculous. When is the last time someone asked you to work overtime for free, or put extra into a school project that was already going to be an A+ grade for no extra credit?
XD I really hope people will realize how foolish they are someday...
n0skills @ Apr 2nd 2008 1:37PM
Actually its MS that are charging us for buying the maps, IW wanted to make them free, but i agree, they should be getting something for the work that they have put in the last couple of months producing the new maps....... Good work IW !!!!!!
Fish1552 @ Apr 3rd 2008 4:01PM
It really amazes me when people expect to get everything that comes out later for free. They have to pay the people who spent time and energy on these maps and these maps do one thing and one thing only - keep up interest in a game and continue to draw new players into the game.
I know I've played since December and haven't played the game in almost 3-4 weeks and moved onto Army of Two and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. NOW, I can't wait to put it back in and play these new maps.
Face it, this is smart capitalism. If those complaining had any concept of that, they would understand that 800 MS is a VERY small price to pay to keep getting new content and keep some of the best people at IW working on this game and coming up with new ones at the same level.
And you complainers call yourselves real gamers.....
