Rumor: Possible Sonic Unleashed Screens

Discovered by some intrepid forum posters, and originating from a Sega FTP site, this collection of images contains what appear to be screenshots of the just discovered Sonic Unleashed. It is of course unknown whether or not these are actually from that game, but the timing seems right, and these images do appear to be in-game, as evidenced by the clipping visible in this shot here. So whatever it is, it's up and running (pun not intended).

As for the shots themselves, they're really clean and have a Blue Dragon quality about them. With locations ranging from Africa to Eggman's lair, and no signs of Sonic's "city" (cursing by rhyme...) friends, could we be seeing signs of a good Sonic game on the horizon? Possibly, if the lack of subtitles is pointing to a more "Subspace Emissary" take on the Sonic cutscenes, with a total lack of dialog, just using animation to tell the story (also similar to the Lego games). The only downside right now appears to be the gameplay screens, which hint at a Sonic and the Secret Rings style of gameplay. At the moment there is still no word as to the platform this will land on, but if it's following the footsteps of Secret Rings, we may have to end up handing this one off.

Images look great so far. Now if it can keep from being an unfinished mess like Sonic 2006 (I really wish they'd patch it up), then maybe we can finally get past all this silly "All Sonic games in 3D suck!" stuff...

And what's wrong with Sonic & The Secret Rings style gameplay? Of all the 3D Sonics since adventure, that one felt the most like the Genesis versions

Oh, and I don't mean to be "that Wii fanboy" but those gameplay screens don't really look that much better than Secret Rings

I'm not deluded, i know the impossibly massive power difference, but Secret Rings, say what you will, was a looker, and this game's style looks very similar (aside from using traditional sonic enemies). Even the ring power screen equates to the Soul Energy bar from Secret Rings

The real question is: What is happening to Super Sonic in that shot where it looks like he's going into that machine?

This actually looks half interesting - let's see if the eighth time's a charm. (I just made up 8, I'm not really sure how long it's been since a good Sonic game.)

If it's anything like Sonic Adventure I will be right on it. Hopefully they've realized those were the only Sonic 3D games that worked.

Some of the later stuff is clearly in-game... The Wii can't do anything at that resolution. Maybe they decided to upscale these significantly for no good reason, I have no idea. But it certainly doesn't imply to me that these are shots of a Wii exclusive game.

The second screen sums up very well Sonic feeling about this.

Don't worry Sonic we make sure Sonic team make you a proper game or we will chase them with forks and torches.

Again anything with Sonic is a buy for me unless is tragically bad so I have faith you Sonic Team.

I LOVE Sonic! Woo! Can't wait for a new game. Of course, I should beat 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog, but I'd have to input the code to make it not suck, and pushing that combo of buttons is worse than trying to play Virtua Fighter with lag.

Still though, it wasn't THAT bad, it was just on the very low end of mediocre. The very, VERY low end.

Don't wish to burst anyone's bubble, but on Destructoid they're claiming that these images are fake on the front page.

I don't know the validity of this claim, but I thought I might as well spread it around. ;)

(They say that the images were rendered in Maya, with HUD elements pasted over in Photoshop, since certain graphical glitches are around, and gameplay wise, some of the HUD elements are innaccurate.)

- combined use of 3-d and 2-d elements
- relevant free roaming adventure fields
- no obnoxious characters involved in gameplay
- non-sucky dialogue
- ironed out glitches =

Downside? The only 3-D Sonic game that didn't make me want to kill my younger brother for buying it was Sonic and the Secret Rings. So many good games could have been bought but instead he has to get the Sonic adventure games and Shadow. It's official, I disown him.
