Sonic Unleashed Gameplay Video? [Update]
[Update: Confirmed to be coming to 360]
With the leaking of the screens earlier, the world was given it's first glimpse of the new Sonic title, Sonic Unleashed. Now that we've all seen the screens, and debated on various elements from the platform (it seems theres still hope that this will be coming to the 360) to the gameplay, and now, not even a scant twelve hours after the initial leak, we have a YouTube of the thing in motion. Surprisingly the footage shows that the game looks to have some real promise. That is, as long as the level design is good and the camera is kept in order. While it was said when the franchise re-launched in 2006, it looks like this could be the return to form that the Sonic franchise has needed for years.

Wow, I was skeptical that sonic was dead after the horrendous game that came out in 06, but this seems like it could fix all the wrongs by having it on rails and returning to its old bullet point on the box: Speed.

Jeez....
I want this game so bad. I founds myself gasping at various points much the same way I did nearly 10 years ago in early '99 when I saw the killer whale sequence on an import copy of Sonic Adventure.
The level design seems to be devoid of the 'gotcha'-style gaps that were present in "Sonic Heroes" and what I could bear to play of Sonic 2006. If Sega can excersice some MUCH NEEDED restraint by keeping the laundry list of friends out (Knuckles can stay) and keep the experience about the speed and great setpieces, they may be able to shake 60 bucks out of this old fan.

ANt @ Mar 23rd 2008 12:59AM
Don't worry, the camera angles and the gameplay will suck as always.....
skins @ Mar 23rd 2008 1:00AM
Wow. I'm quite impressed with this. Please don't break my heart again Sonic.
COMMANDER-TROLL @ Mar 23rd 2008 1:23AM
Is this 2d and 3D? because I never liked the 3D versions of sonic. Classic Sonic was always the best
RomeoDude @ Mar 23rd 2008 1:24AM
Looks like fun... I'll definitely buy it if they decide to bring back the Chao garden.

Actually this game seems to be deriving the camera system from Sonic Rivals in a way with waiting a bit to catch back up on certian turns, in that game at least it worked out pretty good. The platforming is from Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure it seems with a dash of retro. I believe this game will do good. I think really all we need fear is some collision detection at high speeds but even from that video he seemed to handle excently at high speeds. It also seems he's picked up the boost move from Rush. Given the HUD style and the wide screen format of these screenshots and videos along with the screenshot detail I assume this will be a tri platform game, PS3, Xbox360 and Wii. Sega I believe really have learned from their errors.

Looks good, but Sonic has sucked balls in 3D.
MasterInsan0 @ Mar 23rd 2008 1:57AM
It got taken down, apparently, which lends some authenticity to it for those who saw it.
Terrence Stasse @ Mar 23rd 2008 2:01AM
Yes, but I put it back up.
And I don't think anyone is doubting the authenticity of the video at this point.
Mr.ESC @ Mar 23rd 2008 2:30AM
If it is 2D-3D gameplay like Sonic Rush with good camera angles is a buy, then again those levels look way to easy and the framerate well I really hope is an issue with the video and not with the game.
MK @ Mar 23rd 2008 2:58AM
April fools.
Swede33 @ Mar 23rd 2008 3:10AM
Looks awesome. Reminds me of the Sonic game from Dreamcast.
ThisIsChamp @ Mar 23rd 2008 3:15AM
gah this looks horrible. I did like the 2d sonics, but the camera angle looks even worse on this! I feel like the only person that actually enjoyed the 3d games. There not that hard, and there pretty enjoyable...
I'm probably gonna rent this, but damn this looks like a headache of confusion:/
Lewis @ Mar 23rd 2008 4:10AM
Wicked work Terrence.
Nice find, to whoever did catch this anyway.
It reminds me of Sonic Rush, Hopefully most of the gameplay isn't just holding Up on the joystiq. :/
Kael @ Mar 23rd 2008 4:11AM
Ah, fantastic! Looks like it's going to be 2DG (gameplay), just like Sonic should be! It's very good to see more 2DG games; they're really starting to become common! 2DG is definitely making a comeback, and I really like what I see. Keep it up, game developers!
FantomRedux @ Mar 23rd 2008 9:30AM
This is insta-buy for me if the gameplay is like Sonic Rush. The 3D Sonic games where the camera is behind for the majority of the time sucked, so this should be a very refreshing game as far as gameplay goes. If they keep all but Sonic, Robotnik (I'll never forgive them for changing his name >:@), Knuckles and Tails, maybe Shadow, out of the game I'll be happy. I'm getting fed up of more characters. It's like the character designer can only draw anthro's, which sucks.
Jon @ Mar 23rd 2008 10:09AM
I always loved Sega, I hope they give me a new reason to do so.
NvM @ Mar 23rd 2008 11:19AM
Looks like Secret Rings for the 360.
JakubK666 @ Mar 23rd 2008 12:10PM
Cool
Raheem @ Mar 23rd 2008 12:51PM
I really hope these aren't the in game camera angles. Sonic needs a retro makeover!
Ciaran Gallagher @ Mar 23rd 2008 3:05PM
Wow this actually looks really good!
Cole @ Mar 23rd 2008 4:58PM
Damn this is a tough call. If this video isn't a hoax, then it's in still in pretty early development stages. You can tell the camera angles haven't been completely refined, Sonic's character model and animations are kinda bland, and check out the robots at 0:48. They don't move any part of their body when Sonic hits them. Like I said, it could just be in early development stages, but I'm waiting on confirmation from Sega before I get my hopes up.
Gloqwi @ Mar 23rd 2008 9:32PM
I've always wanted to see some way to keep the 2-D aspect everyone loves to merge with the 3-D aspects the next gen is asking for.
Oh, and the one thing Sonic always needs to have,
SPEED! I could hardly see what was happening in some parts of the video....and thats what I like.
Stranger @ Mar 24th 2008 3:30PM
3D graphics + 2D gameplay = good sonic game
How that took Sega almost 15 years to figure out is incomprehensible.
joe @ Apr 5th 2008 2:54PM
I NEVER KNEW SONIC WAS LEASHED IN THE FIRST PLACE.lol
