Gears of War movie penciled in for 2010 release

And to recap: It's good that the Gears of War movie hasn't gone the way of our long time shelved (but still promised) Halo movie. The bad is that we have to wait until at least 2010 to see Marcus chainsaw his way through a live action locust hell. Who wants to bet that Cliffy will be making a cameo? Any takers?

Who cares if your first to leave a comment! If that gives you some sort of excitement, you need to get a hobby or something! Leave a comment about the post!!
But anyways...why do I have a feeling this is gonna end up being like the "Doom" movie? In other words it'll be HORRIBLE!
HazyCloud @ Mar 31st 2008 3:15PM
With Cliffy B executive producer, I bet we see him in there.
SadisticHam @ Mar 31st 2008 3:19PM
@Chester have to agree game to film is rarely good. :P
thisguyrighthere @ Mar 31st 2008 3:28PM
Has there ever been a good video game movie? Besides the highly successful Super Mario Brothers movie of course.
I can't believe there are enough 14 year old boys with $10 to throw away that constantly making craptastic movies like this is profitable.
That's right. 14 year old boys. Anybody over the age of 14 that goes to see this should be ashamed and soundly beaten.
HazyCloud @ Mar 31st 2008 3:31PM
@ # 5,
Does waiting for it to hit the XBLVM count?
EmptyEnergy @ Mar 31st 2008 3:38PM
Doom would have been a decent flick if they stuck to the story. You know the story that made the game kick ass. Hell, they turned Pinky into a guy who had no legs fused to a wheel chair.
Who knows about a film coming out in 2 years. The market will be saturated with flop movies based on games, toy line figures, and remakes of movies based on games.
NvM @ Mar 31st 2008 3:40PM
I really want this to be good, it's possible, but it won't be.
LFotF @ Mar 31st 2008 3:57PM
Why so negative?
I know that most (okay, all) video game movies have been far from stellar, but that doesn't mean that this couldn't be the exception! This game has such an amazing mythology behind it that I think it could be a freakin' amazing movie.
Neuromancer @ Mar 31st 2008 4:05PM
This movie is going to be brutally bad. I just know. Doom was goddawful and it had better source material.
RudyHuxtable @ Mar 31st 2008 4:18PM
Cliffy B as Carmine? Woot.
Cal @ Mar 31st 2008 4:35PM
At least there's no Uwe Boll in sight...
Nick @ Apr 1st 2008 12:05AM
I'm betting they could have gone for 2009, but delayed production purposely to coincide with a GoW 3 launch date.
Vcize @ Mar 31st 2008 5:38PM
I'm sure it will be fun for what it is, a brainless summer action flick. Those not going in expecting a deep drama probably won't be disappointed. Personally, I'll give my money to anything with the name Gears on it.
Oh, and @ #5:
You, like the rest of us, are posting on an internet videogame blog, so get the f*** over yourself already.
mcwattersm @ Mar 31st 2008 5:50PM
I liked Silent Hill... but that story line was kind of twisted up from the original.
Cass-D @ Mar 31st 2008 6:11PM
Games crossing over to the big screen have definitely been met with disdain. Rightfully so, not once has there been a successful adaptation. The same can be said of the route going the other way, movies made into games. Sure it’s done and with such reckless lack of conscience that we are thrown crap in hopes that the marketing ploys will pull the mammoth failure to redemption. Point in case, just about every Batman movie ever made was tried to be made into a game. You have exceptions here and there, like LOTR Return of the king, while this was not an excellent game it did bring you into the story line if not in bits and pieces and it held a degree of fun. But for the most part it doesn't work. Why? Basically it’s mostly in the script. Character development and plot all those things that happen in an A-List production have excellent script writers. When a movie is stripped down to become a game unless they intend to make it into one of the most boring RPG you could get your hands on there just isn't enough time (development time, not playing time) to develop character recognition like you would in a movie. Gamers have a short time window of interest before you can bore us again with dialog if you don't give us some action every once in a while we just take the game out and move on. Often we chastise the attempt and send it to the wayside to collect dust in the bargain bin.
Now the idea of GOW and Halo being a movie both have excellent potential if and only if the Fanboys do not get in the way of its success. Games to Movie Adaptations are like those movies that bare the disclaimer “based of a series of actual events” or “based on a true story”. While there is some truth to what is being told it was spiced up by script writers to engage the audience more. The same will be said for trying to make Gears or Halo as movies. The original game scripts and voice talents in either game were well, sorry guys, lack luster at best. It’s hard to get a game character to portray emotion that matches that of the voice over actor. And if either is to succeed writers have to have a lot of leeway to tweak the story line or character development to again engage the audience. Most important, just about all gamers are movie watchers, but not all movie watchers are gamers. This is a definite heavy blow to any Game adaptation. Movie watchers don’t care that we made our own personal connection with these characters because we become the characters in our games. So for the majority of movie watchers the Character development has to be spot on for them to relate. Unfortunately in doing so we the gamers who know and love our characters get pissed off because the movie producers didn’t stay true to the games character or story line. This is why I say “if the Fanboys do not get in the way…” I would love these to be made into movies, then us gamers could share to everyone what we enjoy so much, I don’t know if I could show up to the movie without my controller in hand. Its definitely going to be difficult knowing I’m not controlling Master Chief of Marcus Fenix.
Yes Cliffy will make an appearance, probably the guy that messes with the lights to scare you.
Cass-D @ Mar 31st 2008 6:15PM
Master Chief or Marcus Fenix

It's not so bad, people sometimes give game movies too hard of a time. Look at Tomb Raider, perfectly okay action movie(s) in their own right, and it's not like the source material was really known for its great story or anything.
Or the recent Hitman - ok yeah, not Oscar material, nor will it be in the top 100 films of all time, but still a good way to watch things blow up and people kick ass.
Besides the obvious trash coming from Uwe Boll, game movies these days are alright (not great, but definitely watchable, and maybe even worth the $10)
andyface @ Mar 31st 2008 7:25PM
Well from the picture the guy playing fenix looks like an idiot. The game characters where stupidly butch (like not human butch) but that guy looks like a bit of a weed, the fabric on his arms is a baggy and he looks like he could retract himself into his suit.
Anyway I'll not speculate on how good or bad this will be (didn't even know it was going to be made), but I'm hardly jumping for joy at the news (more cowering in a corner, hoping it's all an april fools)
Neuromancer @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:11AM
That's not the guy playing Fenix in the movie, that's a Gears of War fanboy that custom-made his own armor and weapon and then visited CliffyB.
erivera3 @ Mar 31st 2008 7:59PM
The Halo movie should be made far before this movie, I really hope they get their act together.
webster1990 @ Mar 31st 2008 9:02PM
done right it could be could. But game to film movies are rarely done right. I quite liked Silent Hill, House of the Dead was done right, it was just like the game, complete with shoddy acting and a god-awful but hilarious script, it just wasn't good.
i hope this is a prequel, and not just a retelling of shit we already know, i want a full emergence day movie. It gives them the use of a decent tag line for the trailers anyways.
Cliffy B should make a cameo. I hope he chainsaws through something.
If they keep the look of the game, and the gore level it should be good. Just as long as the CGI is good enough for the Locusts to be relatively believable and not like Nemesis in Resident Evil 2.
ZeroCorpse @ Mar 31st 2008 10:47PM
This will suck. They ALL suck.
And what "deep mythology" are you talking about here? The basic end result of the "deep mythology" of Gears of War and Halo is "Guy with big gun shoots monsters."
THAT IS ALL. There's NOTHING deep about that.
This is going to suck, and it's going to suck HARD.
DjDATZ @ Apr 1st 2008 1:13PM
Sweet...Like Dustin said...I can't wait to see Marcus Fenix chainsaw through an actual Locust. :D ;)
