Smackdown vs. Raw '09 tags in with debut trailer
We didn't know wrestling was still popular enough to warrant an annual release, but over the weekend THQ dropped the trailer for WWE: Smackdown vs. Raw 2009. The video showcases the latest feature for the upcoming title, co-op story mode. While we're sure there is still a group of fans clamoring for a "chair-shot to the face" good time, we wonder if we really need another WWE game every year? Madden's annual release already gets us annoyed but we understand the reasoning behind it, but does including one new addition and swapping some characters in the roster really need another $60 price tag?

Thats actually a pretty cool little trailer!

Ok, maybe its just me! But watching or even playing 2 men hold each other, throw each other around, and then win by being on top of the other man for 3 seconds......JUST DOESNT DO IT FOR ME!!
SORRY!
Josh @ Mar 31st 2008 2:45PM
yeah, they're just following the sports theme of annual releases, whether it makes sense or not
do just enough to make it an upgrade to last year's, and they'll hook us
*sigh*

Neuromancer @ Mar 31st 2008 3:03PM
Chester thats what some people want. Don't forget that the men are half naked and oily.
Neuromancer @ Mar 31st 2008 3:04PM
Yeah for a baby he's awfully homophobic.
mcwattersm @ Mar 31st 2008 3:08PM
Now with 10% less bugs and freezes than last year!
Chester @ Mar 31st 2008 3:13PM
If I was homophobic I wouldnt live in San Francisco, WHICH I DO!!! And I'm married. The lil boy is my son!
Assumption is the root of all evil! LOL!

It would be worth $60 if they could fix the insane load times.
Also, why not incorporate the xbox live camera so you can put your face on your own custom wrestler. That would sell tons.

Not just "one new feature." There's a create-a-finisher mode, which looks brilliant, and DLC has been confirmed. You can catch an interview with one of the leads over at IGN.

Speaking of load times... has anyone been playing "Bully"? WOW! The frequency of loading screens is INSANE!!! Every person you talk to, building you go into, and more have a loading screen. I think its the worst I have ever seen! Lovin the game, but that part of it is just crazy!
Cal @ Mar 31st 2008 5:38PM
Any see the Big Show vs Mayweather 'fight'? I wish they'd have a real fight so that Mayweather could get mauled, but no they of course had to fix it the other way...
Deck @ Mar 31st 2008 6:34PM
People still play these games? *sigh*
Pathetic!

Contrary to many of your beliefs....wrestling is still quite popular. The WWE set attendance records in most of the large venues they hold their shows in. It's still popular among kids....and adults alike. Just because some of you have already went through your "OMGZ I LIKE WRESTLING....OMGZ NEVERMIND THIS STUFF SUX" face...doesn't mean that there are millions and millions that still enjoy it.
Remind me to go into news posts about things I could care less about and make a stupid unnecessary comment.
xImmortal007x @ Mar 31st 2008 11:53PM
So I can't edit my comment? Hmmm..."doesn't mean that there *AREN'T* millions and millions that still enjoy it.''

Ummm, this isn't new. The Smackdown series has always had a new game every year. It's just new to some of you microsoft fanboys because the Smackdown series finally came in '07. See, if you learn to expand your world and enjoy ALL systems for what they're worth you all would have known the SD series originally started on Playstation and they've had the best series imo when I did like wrestling. Now I may catch it when I'm bored or still like to play the game every now and then but I bought SDvsR08 and played it a whole 2-3 times so I don't think I'll get 09. It was just more a bored at them moment I'll try this...

Professional Wrestling, although having planned finishes to every match, is actually more physically demanding than most people realize. Injuries occur very often in this profession and one injury can be a major career setback. Not to mention that there is no off-season for professional wrestlers. They preform weekly, where it's common for other athletes to have a week or two off and then months off before competing again. Also, the matches seen on TV aren't the only ones they preform in. There are also non-televised house shows and it's typical for wrestlers to have only two ndays off a week. Even then, they are training and choreographing new matches. (In UFC and other MMA brands, they only have to compete two or three times a year.) Occasionally the matches do look a lot more fake than they should, but some of the best wrestlers will go ahead and connect with their moves to make it more enjoyable for the fans. And these hits really hurt at times. If you've ever seen the Big Show slap someone hard across the chest, you'll know it has to be painful. Add to that high-flyers who take major risks every time they get in the ring (Just a little off on any of their moves could mean a career-ending injury.) These guys put their bodies on the line a lot, only to be disrespected by those who believe that they're smarter than the actually are. Give them the respect they deserve.

My boyfriend and I are rather into wrestling, being stage combatants and stunt performers, it's amazing to see what these people can do. We've played just about every incarnation of this series (SVR) and while some are better than others, it's always nice to see the improvements made to the graphics, and to fit the changing roster. As new stars come along, it's great to be able to play them.
Plus, as a couple who likes to play video games together, I'm happy to see a cooperative tag team storyline, something we've been waiting for for a long time. The series is great if you don't want to play for hours but want to pick up something quick and fun. So yeah, we're excited to see what this one looks like.
Here's hoping Roddy Piper is in this one too...
