CryENGINE 2 on the 360 nearly equal to PC version
Team Crytek' gorgeous and uber resource intensive CryENGINE 2 (which is the engine that powers the visually stunning Crysis on the PC) is slowly making its way to consoles. But how well will the engine run on console hardware that equates to half of what Crysis demands? According to Crytek, surprisingly well.
In an interview with IGN about CryENGINE 2 and its performance on next-gen consoles, Crytek business manager Harald Seeley says that they "tailor the engine specifically to each platform" and that they "expect the final outcome will result in games that look like they're running at high settings, or nearly high settings, on a PC." An amazing engineering feat if they can pull it off. So far, Crytek has yet to make their engine available to console developers as it's still under development, but if the console tech demo video (embedded above) tells us anything, it's that CryENGINE 2 reeks of promise. Just look at those colorful teapots roll!

Is "engineering feet" better or worse than "engineering hands"? :)
Dustin Burg @ Apr 8th 2008 12:12PM
it all depends i guess

I thought that was just the annoying Sony advert from a while back.
I've got a PC capable of running Crysis on very high (with some custom config tweaks too) at 720p, and I just don't play it - the game is boring as hell. It's a really pretty tech demo, that turns even worse when you hit the frozen levels. Graphically fantastic, the gameplay - not so much.

I agree with you...
I played the game, and wasn't impressed. PC Gamer gave it a 98%.... 98 PERCENT!? That, combined with their 88% review of the craptac-ular Hellgate:London lost them a subscriber.
That said, I think the engine has great potential, and would love to see new 360 games use the engine.
horngreen @ Apr 8th 2008 12:22PM
Sure the tech demo looks great but what are the chances of seeing a game from it this gen? I recall the 360 demo of the car slamming into the wall and being damaged differently depending upon how it hit the wall. Still havn't really seen that put to use yet. Forza 2s visual damage is weak as well as PGR. I guess Burnout Paradise does a pretty good job. Heres hoping for GRID to pull it off.

Anyone know what the song is?
If not, I might have to spend a long time in Garage band over the following week.
EMOruffino @ Apr 8th 2008 12:27PM
i would love to see this engine on the 360.
:p

Personally, I'd like to see the UE3 get some competition from either the Cryengine or Id Tech 5 engine.

hmmmmm. So, I'm not the only one that caught that. lol

It's a fucking blog, not a $19.95/yr subscription magazine. I read through this shit so fast to gather information I don't even see the point in spending that much time in regards to grammar.
Professional journalism... its a fucking BLOG SITE! Give'em a break.
Sacredleader @ Apr 9th 2008 6:20AM
D dogg: I understand what your saying, as for me saying what I said because I to am a blogger for another site similar to X3F. That comment was in no way a dig at Dustin or X3F. I guess you missed that "lol". I've gotten comment's just as Neopath said about things I've written as well. As for "Professional Journalism", that's another topic.
You tell me to "give'em a break", but try to call me out for just commenting on another comment. As before, hmmmm.

Finally a chance at the massively multiplayer online teapot-player game I've been waiting for all these years.
Josh @ Apr 8th 2008 1:02PM
If they can get a game to look like that, I'll be happy as long as its fun also. I don't want to play a Barbie horse adventure with real life style graphics.
Jeff Tronti @ Apr 8th 2008 1:03PM
Great. Now I have to change my pants.

CRYENGINE wreaks havoc on grammar. :p
Doug @ Apr 8th 2008 1:29PM
Yeah, yeah, our game is SO special, SO advanced it isn't even POSSIBLE to do on a puny console... wait, we're tanking on PC sales??? HEY... we're geniuses! We found a way to port it to consoles!!!
Crytek you're a bunch of drama queens. Just sell us the game, that's what we want. Not more blown P.R.
Tony @ Apr 8th 2008 1:34PM
Personally I'll get a bit more excited once we see actual game play in action. I wonder what will suffer in a video like that once AI and so forth are introduced. Still, as it stands, it looks excellent.
emirabal @ Apr 8th 2008 1:36PM
What the heck is the point to the add, no offense, but come on, and what was up with those balls with little appendages
Jeff Tronti @ Apr 8th 2008 2:06PM
Yeah these goddam balls are shaped like tea cups and tea kettles. What a horrible excuse for a ball.
False @ Apr 8th 2008 3:20PM
Does anyone know what the song actually is?
George Arauz @ Apr 8th 2008 5:48PM
KICK ASS
