The intensity of chess and the in your face nature of hip hop. They go together almost as well as peanut butter and jelly. That's exactly why the
Hip Hop Chess Federation (for reals) is sponsoring an Xbox Live
Chessmaster LIVE Hip Hop Weekend full of chess, hip hop and giveaways. The Hip Hop weekend fun kicks off April 11th through the 13th, where gamers can sign up for a
Play & Win, grab free
Chessmaster LIVE downloads and experience the whole hip hop vibe. Like we said, chess and hip hop ... like peanut butter and jelly.

Completely, utterly, essentially ridiculous. Chessmaster Live jumps the shark.
jtedesco33 @ Apr 9th 2008 3:41PM
What a joke, nerdcore and chess go together but the garbage known as hip hop goes better with shooting and beating people up (GTA IV).
Gemini Ace @ Apr 9th 2008 3:46PM
Retarded.
Jonman @ Apr 9th 2008 3:46PM
A week late with this story, aren't we?
Whatever next, Halo and Polka?
Mr.ESC @ Apr 9th 2008 4:01PM
Actually depends on the polka.
ZEBRA NINER @ Apr 9th 2008 3:48PM
That's... interesting. Why?
Mr.ESC @ Apr 9th 2008 4:02PM
WellI can't blame them for trying to make their product interesting but is just that Chess stop being relevant.
browndoom @ Apr 9th 2008 4:27PM

Does this mean we'll finally uncover the mystery of chessboxing?

And for the record: Hip-hop haters do not sound like very smart people who are fun to hang out with. They kinda sound like douchebags. Just sayin'.

I've always known about the Wu-Tang/chess connection (one of my favorite albums of recent is GZA/DJ Muggs's Grandmasters), but even I have to admit that I had a chuckle at the ad on the dashboard.
When I fell in love with hip hop, the artists cared less about a hit, and more about a message. I can understand why people laugh at hip hop today, especially if it's associated with chess.
Etchasketchist @ Apr 9th 2008 6:04PM
Hey, guess what, today's hip-hop is just as good as it was when you "fell in love" with hip-hop. And hip-hop back then was just as goofy as it is now. Hip-hop, like all broad pop culture genres, is simultaneously genius and retarded depending on what perspective you want to view it from. Some of the worst rap records ever came out in 1988 and 1993 and 1996 or whatever your golden age was. And some of the best rap albums of all time will come out this year and next year and the year after. Hip-hop is huge. It contains multitudes.

Etchasketchist is dead on. 1990 had new material from ice cube, tribe called quest, and public enemys fear of a black planet, but was also the same year vanilla ice was making 'hits' and mc hammer came out with a saturday morning cartoon. hip hop is great, but marketing it through xbl seems strange since most people on xbl are like jtedesco and are... well, dumb,
AnOffday @ Apr 9th 2008 6:09PM
The 3 white guys who own Chessmaster Live should enjoy this.
El-Connro @ Apr 9th 2008 7:13PM
Seems like Dustin isn't a Wu-Tang fan.
VanIslePimp @ Apr 9th 2008 8:45PM
It's too bad most of you can't get past the "Hip-Hop" part of the name to discover what the HHCF is really all about... http://www.hiphopchessfederation.org/

One of the things that I love about chess is that the game is universal. People from all over the world, from all walks of life, enjoy it. You don't even have to speak the same language as your opponent in order to have a good game.
So, please, play some chess with someone you wouldn't otherwise have interact with.
Jonah Falcon @ Apr 10th 2008 2:18AM
Trust me, up in Harlem here in NYC there are plenty of guys - young and old - at the chess tables in the park.
